I didn't see a thread created for this recently announced book so I thought I'd get the ball rolling.

I have fond memories of the Legends Thrawn Trilogy, flaws and all included. The early 90's was a dark period for Star Wars fans. It had been 8 years since the last Star Wars movie and George Lucas had said, not for the last time, that there would be no more movies. So I, like many others, had moved on to other things to occupy my time. And then, in a local bookstore, I saw the hard cover novel, Heir to the Empire. The rest, as they say, is history.

Now I look forward to this new novel from one of my favorite writers. It will be interesting to see how this Thrawn differs from his Legends counterpart in both character and backstory. I hold no illusions that this new Thrawn novel will hold the same enthralling grip on me that Heir to the Empire did in the early 90's, but I'll admit, it will be nice to see an old friend again...

Do you recommend reading the Thrawn trilogy? Because I have bought a large amount of the new canon novels and I would like to get into legends.

I enjoyed it. The prequels negated some of the story but if you can look past that I think you'll enjoy it too.

There are a number of Zahn created characters that make the Thrawn Trilogy great. Mara Jade, Talon Karrde the Solo twins Jacen and Jaina are all introduced in this trilogy. You also get a look into Wookie culture on Chewy's homeworld...I might start reading this again.

Hope you enjoy it. Point. (That will make more sense after you read the novels):)

Definitely would recommend. It introduces some great new characters, has some great twists and turns, and always seemed (at least to me) a lot more character driven and grounded than many of the other Legends stories. Luke isn't an infallible, unstopable badass who can yank Star Destroyers out of orbit and you can definitely see him grow over the course of the trilogy. Han and Lando have some interesting adventures together working to solve a mystery, Leia gets to show off her kickass diplomatic skills you never fully saw in the films, and Chewie actually has some awesome moments and isn't just ignored/pushed to the side. Lots of great new characters too, and the threat throughout the whole trilogy is that of a strategically and tactically brilliant leader instead of just anther disappointing Death Star stand in (looking at you Darksaber).

It might not be perfect, and bits of it were definitely retconned before the EU was even made into Legends, but it is well worth the read and I think makes a great intro to the Legends universe.

Thanks for the information, absolutely going to buy it now as I have heard many things about Mara Jade and the twins but I was never a aware of when they came in. :)
I also heard that Timothy Zahn was one of the best Legends authors, hopefully after reading this I will think this as well.
I know this topic is about Thrawn but do you recommend any other legends?

Before you decide to read anything based on any recommendations (mine included) you have to ask yourself what really strikes your fancy. Remember that the Star Wars universe is VAST and there have been many works made that some may say they were awful while others may say they were brilliant. It's just as the saying goes ''One mans garbage is another mans treasure'' and it is with this in mind that you should listen to any advise. What are the things you love about SW? Do you love just the good guys or do you have a passion for seeing things from the villains point of view? Do you find Bounty Hunters awesome or are you a fan of many minor background characters and you would like to know more? Do you like your SW limited to just Jedi vs Sith kind of conflicts or would you find it awesome to see the Jedi fighting for their lives against fanatical aliens with living technology? Do you ever wonder what it would be like to read a zombie horror SW novel? If things like these are to your liking then there are many great novels out there for you my friend that I'm quite sure you can always enjoy but keep in mind that what everyone tells you will not be THE OFFICIAL opinion and you should explore many things on your own.

Ask things like ''Are there novels of Bounty Hunters'' or ''Are there novels of Darth Maul'' if these are things you like cause there the fans will guide you on the right path and tell you correct things like many of the novels names and what they are about but be extremely careful when asking if something is good or not because then it will be that persons opinion that will shine rather than the real thing and many hardcore fans will try to push you to join the masses. Take Boba Fett for example. Fett has many and I mean MANY die hard fans that think he is the most awesome thing in the galaxy and they will aim for your head if you say things like ''Cad Bane is way better than him'' and they will try to make you think that way and guide you in that path when recommending things. To most of these fans they would never tell you that a novel about other Bounty Hunters like Bossk or Zuckuss are way better than a Fett novel and the same can be said about ANYTHING based on the prequels. There are alot of PT haters out there that will try to turn you into a prequel hater if you give them the chance but there are many awesome prequel era novels that are even way better than some OT based ones so let your own opinion be your guide cause while alomst every single SW fan (and here I include myself) can tell you to stay away to anything Jar Jar related (thanks God he has no novel that I know of) if that character is of your liking then you would find a story based on him to be to your liking even if the great majority of the SW fans would scream blasphemy!

In the world of SW novels there is a little bit of everything for everyone and believe me when I tell you that there are some great authors out there who can even take a chubby, dorky looking, Bounty Hunter with bandages on his head that is the least liked of the bunch and turn him into a very interesting character with a cool story.

Thank you for taking the time to write this out, I am sure it took a long time. I appreciate it.
In the case of the Thrawn novels I was interested in the idea of reading them as I enjoyed Tarkin, because it was from the view of a villain, along with Lords Of The Sith which had a large part of it in the view of The Emperor and Vader.
Do you know of any other books which are in the view of the villain? As I am unable to find a list which are just these type of books.

Well as I said before you have to think about what characters strike your fancy. The Thrawn trilogy is awesome but I warn you that though he is a main character the novels don't focus on just him. There are some novel however where the main character is indeed the villain and if this is what you want then there are quite a few to choose from!

These pics with the three novels are trilogys.

Those are all novel with the bad guys as the main characters.
If you happen to like to know about many interesting background characters then the Tales novel are really good reads.

And all of these are just a few of the vast collection of novels there are out there to enjoy!

Oddly enough with as many SW novels as I have read, I have never read any of the Thrawn books. In the last two years, I have strayed away from reading the Legends books, although I am still collecting them. this will be a series I'll have to go back and read though.

There was a side note I really liked about the Thrawn legends. I remember a visit from Leia on the Planet where the Nogri came from, a non human race that thinks positive of Vader. They called Leia " lady Vader"..

I've read the Bane series and Darth Plagueis and liked both. I think I own the rest of those too, just haven't gotten around to reading them
