Hot off the press line at Star Wars Celebration, we have more news in regards to the fresh batch of Star Wars movies just announced; during Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase, three new films were unveiled. The most surprising of the three is a film from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Logan director James Mangold. The acclaimed filmmaker will be tackling the tale of the first Jedi in a brand-new era tens of thousands of years before A New Hope.

The Wrap caught up with Mangold to uncover some new details on the project. He revealed he will also write the film with an all-new set of characters. He says he's been working on the project for a couple months under the codename Star Wars Zero, as the film will explore the origins of the Force and the first Jedi. Mangold also added that fans should not expect this to be a Star Wars film from the 'stone age' despite it being set so far in the past.

During the showcase panel, Lucasfilm unveiled several new eras. Mangold's film will take place during the new Dawn of the Jedi era, which takes place roughly 25,000 years before A New Hope. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy described it as a 'biblical epic' during the panel.

No release date for Mangold's film has been set. We expect more news from the press line throughout the weekend at Star Wars Celebration, so keep it here for more updates. You can find a full rundown of what happened at Lucasfilm's Showcase panel here.

    UPDATE!

On the floor of Star Wars Celebration, James Mangold confirmed recent rumors that he would also be writing and directing a Swamp Thing film. This project's script is being written alongside the Star Wars project that was announced earlier today.

Shortly after this interview went viral, DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn confirmed that Mangold began development on his Swamp Thing project shortly after he and Co-CEO Peter Safran took the reins of all things DC, which apparently precedes Mangold's decision to do a Star Wars movie.

Due to how ambitious his Star Wars movie sounds, and taking into account what we know about the timeline of when Mangold signed on for these projects, it is most likely that Swamp Thing, a horror movie with superhero elements, will come first. Gunn indicated that the DC Universe Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate will take place over about five years, with two movies and two shows released per year. Given that five movies were announced as part of the slate, Swamp Thing will most likely hit in 2027 at the pace that they've given themselves, meaning that Mangold's Star Wars film will most likely hit in 2029, assuming that it takes two years to actually make. James Mangold is also working on a Bob Dylan biopic, which will be his next project after Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and will precede both his DC and Star Wars projects.
