I think the idea is that, as humans, you should be able to identify with other human beings.

    Poe Dameron.

I identify with the way he's good at something, not afraid to admit it himself.. then laughs in the faces of narrow minded idiots :D

i know from my point of view, when i first saw starwars, i identified with luke on his journey. i know from reading the stats on the demographics watching starwars that its core audience is middle aged men watching the movies, so wondered wether they felt it easily identifiable with a female lead?

i can relate to all the characters, they have two legs, two arms a body and head, lol
Do you agree some of the allure of this type of film is the enjoyment of seeing your self as the protagonist ?

Honestly I think all of the main characters are relatable and easy to identify with regardless of the demographics.

I had a hard time picking one...In the OT...I always had a favorite...Han Solo. I still loved all the other character.....and I identified with every single one in some way, shape, or form....even Vader.

I always felt that the only way for a SW film to fail were to have characters you did NOT identify with in some way.

Poe...brave, sarcastic, not afraid to speak his mind. Determined, friendly, and tries his best at everything....whether he is the best at it or not.
Finn...Brave. Caring. Willing to accept he is different than his peers. Stands up for what he believes in. Does his best to be there for the ones he cares about.
Rey...Hopeful. Always hopeful. Resistant to change. Willing to stay calm and do the right thing, even when presented the 'easy way out'
Kylo Ren...Conflicted. Confused. Afraid. Afraid of being seen as or considering himself a failure. He bottles his emotions...and that is a very (unhealthy) human thing to do....
Han...Cocky. Humerus. Good-hearted, even though he wouldn't admit it.
Leia...Confident. Always wants to be a part of something for the better of all lifeforms.
    Chewie...Loyal. Loving....and tough as hell.
Obi-Wan and Yoda...wanting to give the best advice to the next generation. Want to inspire greatness.
Hux...Bold...but only in instances where you feel protected from getting punched in the face...Hux should have been named General Internet Troll
Vader...Lonely. He is strong. He is successful...but he wants his son to be with him....in the end....instead of bringing his son to evil...he joins his son in good...

Humans are complex...and every one of these characters can be related to. Maybe not all....but most. And I think depending on recent events or different stages of life, different characters become more applicable to relation.

I kept flip-flopping between Poe and Kylo. Poe reminds me of my life as an Infantryman. I was good at what I did, and I enjoyed it. The older I got and the more surprises life left for me...one example being the passing of my best friend followed by a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes at an uncommonly diagnosed age in life...left me feeling like Kylo. Years have passed and life has improved, leaving me feeling like a mixture of Poe and Finn...and looking back on the challenges I've overcome makes me feel like Chewie.

I believe that has always been the point.

Well if Finn was there idea of what Black People want then no they didnt pander to me...I hated him like I want to be represented by another jokey loser with clearly inferior skills stuck in sidekick position who tries hard but cant even beat an unnamed stomtrooper and then gets Friendzoned....all the new characters either had not enough screen time (POe, Maz, SNoke, Leia...Luke), were jokes (Phasma, Kylo, Finn) or were Sues (REY)...I guess I related to Poe the best.

Just a quick one, by getting friendzoned do you mean when he was unconscious and she kisses his forehead?
do you think your expectations may be a little high if you expect him to have got the girl while being flat-out on his back, lol?

Great post, i couldn't agree more, i guess the question was to see whether the target demo which, lets face it is middle aged white men, can identify with a female lead in the same way that when the first SW came out, we would have seen ourselves as luke? and so far the poll suggests that is the case, i loved rey and thought she was the lead of the movie, and did a brilliant job at it, i was also intrigued in this film that i found myself identifying with kai lo ren more than i would have though and wondered whether this is because as a man, i can appreciate a perfectly acted role by a female protagonist yet can't see myself as her, in the same way i did luke?

I voted for Rey, because I always want to follow the hero on his/hers journey and because I couldn't vote for more of them. It wasn't important that she was a woman. While I was growing up, I didn't relate to Leia who was always strong, cool and collected (let's face it, very few people kick ass like Leia) - I related to Luke because he was the hero on the journey. He went from being whiny teenager to Jedi Master during OT and so he was the one I identified with. The character gave us the idea that we can all grow and change and succeed.

However, I feel that almost all the characters in TFA are relatable (well, except maybe young Hitler wannabee Hux): Finn, Rey, Poe, BB-8, Han, Leia, even Kylo Ben. Finn is brave, kind, loyal to his friends, when he doesn't know something - he wings it like most people would try to do, he has the spirit and enthusiasm of youth. Rey is hopeful and kindhearted in spite of the circumstances that should have made her hard, she feels wonder and finds joy in little things and accomplishments, she is competent because she had to be if she wanted to survive, when she finds friendship, she values it even if it's with a droid. Poe is cocky, but not arrogant, charming, brave, assertive and clever. Ben is conflicted, like we all were at one time or another. It really didn't matter to me who the actors were or who they represented in real world, it was the characters that stole my heart. It is them I want to learn more about.

    And, BB-8 is a puppy/kitten I want to own. :D

Hmmm... well for me, I liked the entire cast as a whole, but Kylo for sure. My wife leaned to her fav Solo. My daughter, "old" Leia as she calls her and Rey. My son, his fav is Chewie through and through lol, but liked Finn too.

I can identify with all of them, I don't care what gender or colour they have. Rey, Finn, Poe and Kylo Ren are in fact all fan archetypes. They wrote their characters really well.

I related to Finn.... though I LOVE the Rey character.

Finn was your normal person who displayed almost legendary bravery, and stood up against impossible odds, to do what he thought was right...

That is best shown when Poe asks Finn why are you doing this, and Finn answers, because it is the right thing to do.

I think this shows a sense of courage and moral character that stands above and beyond most in the Star Wars universe, as he was willing to risk all, to help Poe escape, as well as to help rescue BB8, and to go try to save Rey.

IMO, this shows Finn is no comical sidekick, but a true hero in the Star Wars universe sense, and deserving of the respect and trust placed in him by those around him, like Poe, Han, and Maz.
