SLEIA !!!!! And especially their hit : Angel Of Death Star . :D

(that Dave Lombardo fill-in at 1:46 :eek::eek: 35 years, and it still blasts me)

    Well...
I started all with Metallica and Iron Maiden. The entrance gate ! It was the late 80's, I came from the electronic music of Jean-Michel Jarre, and wanted to experiment new things in music...
I then jumped to Guns n Roses, slipped a bit, and the car escaped me  because I ended with Slayer and some prog metal, mainly Dream Theater and Symphony X and here and there, some bits of Opeth, Cannibal Corpse, Suicidal Tendencies and/or Infectious Grooves, Angra, Sepultura, Anthrax.

However, I'm 50 now. Seventies or early eighthies old bands, such as Accept, Manowar, the frenchies from Dio and Trust, are still regularly playing inside of me.
And guitar-heroes are the eternal sunshine of my podium : Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Jason Becker (poor Jason), Marty Friedman, Yngwie "da f*in God" Malmsteen.

A special wink to The Retinal Circus with the extraterrestrial Devin Townsend.

I surely missed some huge bands.

@Angelman These dudes are from Liverpool. This song has been stuck in my head for three days. They have a couple of others that I like a lot. I 'll post those later.

Never heard of them, or really dislike ?

    Nope.
I'm a metal frenchy, from the late 80's, 90's, so I may know international bands only.
In the 2000' my 'rebel age' was terminated :) so I started to move, mainly to come back to one of my very first love, the organ music of JS Bach.

From Maiden : Powerslave and Seventh Son (of a seventh son) for me. Killers in third position.

I missed Megadeth. But only one album : Rust In Peace. Didn't like any of the others. :( Perhaps one piece or two, on Peace sells or Countdown to Extinction.

I guess AC/DC would be more hard rock than metal. Either way, I love this.

I saw AC/DC on stage with Axl Rose as a singer.
I first feared the Axl would be... kind of "annoying". Y'know, his continuous mania to "yeahahahahahahah" at the end of the songs. I was kind of thinking "I hope there won't be too much GnR in that ACDC show".
Well it was a blast. Axl perfectly did it, remaining at his place, never got into a 'Hey I am Axl Rose' thing. Absolute orgasm :) I was yelling with 60K persons in a stadium, it was one of the hugest experiences of my whole life. The other was G'n'R show in 1992 in Vincennes Hippodrome, Paris.

Sorry, @Lord Phanatic, I never managed to get the hots for metal. I'm more of a rock/hard rock kinda guy myself. I liked me some glam metal (Mötley Crüe & Twisted Sister) when I was a kid, but I'm the kind of heathen who prefers Metallica's black album over the other stuff :p

    My appologies.

Black Album is the last good album from the 4 horsemen. After the black album, it's a well...

Well the difference I SEE (and I may be mistaken) is : can you dance rock'n'roll on this ? If the answer is YES that is rock, if the answer is NO that is metal.
I think one (well, two persons) may correctly dance rock'n'roll upon AC/DC, same with some MOTORHEAD pieces. ACDC and MOTORHEAD are rock. I also think it is neither possible to dance rock'n'roll on METALLICA nor IRON MAIDEN : these two are metal.
    That is MY take.

Musical genres are very difficult to define, but generally and very simplistically, you could say that rock is "smaller" and more melodic, while metal is "grander" and more powerful. Metal can also be more sophisticated and produced, while rock can be simpler and rawer, if that makes sense. Of course, there are many rock & metal songs that don't fit these description, and the entire thing is complicated by the fact that metal grew out of rock, so the two genres are very closely related.

The below "time"-line isn't actually correct (way too simple), but a quick overview of the development of rock music might go something like this.

Rock and Roll developes out of the Blues (with some early country music mixed in) in the 1940s & 1950s. Bascially, it is black party music that became mainstream once whities picked it up and ran with it.

Rock grows out of Rock and Roll once musicians discover electric guitars and amplifiers, in the late 50s or so. You get harder sounds with more distortion, and, of course, much louder music. (You also get the beginnings of counter cultures and youth culture around this time, which defines rock culture in a big way).

By the 1960s & 1970s, rock music exploded, as people who were young when the first rock stars (like Chuck Berry & Elvis, to mention a random two) broke through in the 1950s, started forming successful bands themselves. A lot of new rock styles grew out of that, from more artsy stuff (prog rock) to more pop rock things (glam rock), and more. One of these new styles that show up is Heavy Metal (or just Metal), with roots in edgier rock styles like Psychedelic Rock and such; these tend to favor massive sounds, even more distortion, long guitar solos, and darker songs & imagry. As Heavy Metal developed, there was also a growing focus on musicality, far removed from the pop sensibilities of "simpler" rock, and you get some extremely competent Heavy Metal acts in the 1970s.

(A quick detour: A band like Iggy and the Stooges, which I absolutely adore, broke out in the late 1960s and had a similar hard, edgy, and distorted sound, and you'd been forgiven for mistaking them as heavy metal, but with them the focus on musicality and virtuousness didn't exist; it was all just wild rock and noise. So, as an example, they are not Metal, but much more a proto-Punk Rock thing).

The 1970s see further splitting and re-merging of rock styles, and by the end of that decade you get synthezisers and counter styles, like Punk, Disco, and eventually New Wave, which all have roots in rock and blues.

By the 1980s, Metal (now typically dropping the qualifier "Heavy") explodes into a gazillion subgenres, and it is very much the decade of Metal. And now things start to muddle even more, as you get sub-genres like Glam Metal with acts like Mötley Crüe & Bon Jovi, which you could be forgiven to seeing as rock bands, and who are galaxy away from Trash Metal acts, like Metallica and Slayer, just to name some examples.

So, yeah... That's a too simplified overview, but one has to start (and stop) somewhere ;) Also, it is more than likely that I have just incited a major flame war now, raging over which band counts as what, and such things. Rocker & Metalheads don't always play well together

    (flame war contin'd :D)

Rock. You are a couple on the dancefloor, you have the hands of your mate in your hands, and you make her(him) swirl and twirl around you.
Metal. You are alone on the dancefloor, you play an imaginary guitar in your hands, and you make your (long and dirty)hair swirl and twirl around your head.

    Period. :D

Who dares now to define stoner, thrash and neoclassical ? :p

(edit) added a lot of emoticons to say : don't take all of this too seriously.

What you describe as rock is actually Swing, though... or possibly Rock and Roll or Rockabilly :D
And you can definitely play airguitar to Rock!
Headbanging is more associate with Metal, though, as you indicate

Also, we're going off track. To get back on topic, I personally don't care too much for Metal, although I'll take me some Industrial Rock, Punk Rock, or Hard Rock any day of the week

See. I knew we had a connection. Deftones are my life long favorite band. I went out to Cali in '18 to see them headline at the Aftershock festival. It was surreal. My first and still only time seeing them live. In the vid below I was close to the front and slightly to the left.

Do you have a favorite Deftones album?
