A guy who, more often than not, bravely charges into being a hero without full understanding of what that means. And we love him for it.

Sure, let's check out what the Tusken Raiders are doing, even though I need to be getting Artoo to the South Ridge.

A person who needed tons of help from others. In latter life he made all the same mistakes previous Jedi made.

Despite being a virgin & alone he died peacefully.

 

What good is being a Legend if you end up dying a virgin? Just sayin...

 

Luke Skywalker was a legend, and like many legends, they're human and holstering regret and doubts and for some, they find no way out but to commit suicide, and like Luke, he did just that; force suicide.

 

What he did definitely wasn’t suicide. I’d call is sacrifice. He went out protecting his sister and bring hope to the galaxy.

 

And upon looking at the twin suns over the horizon, he felt satisfied and ready to go. At that point, he let go and disappeared just as Obi Wan did. But I can see your side of the argument too.

 

Well he did attempt suicide once before so who's to say.

 

Was that confirmed? Is that what he was doing when Rey interrupted?

 

I believe @Dr Jerrone is referring to the scene where Luke tried to enter the tree when it was burning, and got pushed back by "something". Was that it? I also interpreted that as Luke having decided to commit suicide on that moment. Or, he was trying to save the books.

In fact, I think he was probably going to commit suicide when he was going to set the tree on fire to begin with, before Yoda showed up. He says something like this to the old master: "I'm going to end all of this. The texts, the tree, the Jedi. I'm going to burn it all down". This would make it two suicide attempts in my book. But, he couldn't do it in the end. And, notice how he's wearing the Jedi cerimonial robes in that scene, as when Rey showed up.

The open point, for me, is if Luke was going to commit suicide when Rey appeared. Or, if not, why has he not done it before? Remember: "I came to this island to die". "The Jedi need to end". Maybe he simply couldn't do it, or "something" didn't allow him to. The Force perhaps.

 

I had this thought that maybe Luke put on the robes as his daily ritual. Each day he does his fishing and miking, etc. Then he puts on his robes and waits for the force to take him. Since he cut himself off from the force, I don’t think the force was going to take him until he reconnected and atoned for his mistakes. Peace and Purpose, not pain.

I don’t think he was going to kill himself when burning the tree. I think he just meant he was going to get rid of the books. He knew he was never leaving the island, so when he died, the Jedi died.

 

Luke tried to commit suicide in front of Vader in Cloud City.

 

A flawed person, but ultimately a true hero.

Luke is, to me, at various times, and sometimes nearly or completely all at once...
