    So while watching ROTS this morning (my Sunday morning cartoons :p) I realized that Captain Panaka serves the Republic and his Queen Amidala in TPM. By AOTC & ROTS he has disappeared but his nephew, Captain Typho, has become Padmé's private guard. With a history of serving the government, did Finn come from this family line by serving, but actually seving the First Order instead without his knowledge and is that why he is so prone to serving people like how he did with Rey who is a complete stranger to him?

    Trivia Facts:
    Captain Quarsh Panaka was originally written with no first name. Quarsh was later chosen as a nod to the actor who played him, Hugh Quarshie,

    Captain Gregar Typho was Captain Quarsh Panaka's nephew.

    Typho was written/created because Panaka actor Hugh Quarshie declined to reprise his role in AOTC.

    Hugh Quarshie is more famous in the UK for his role on the BBC tv hospital drama show, "Holby City".

    Legend has it Quarshie asked for an unreasonable increase in his fee to appear in AOTC and wouldn't budge during negotiation, which led Lucas to write him out completely. Just another example of an actor letting his ego get the better of him.

    He definitely has to be related to Panaka/Typho or Lando because there are only 2 black families in the entire universe.

    *Edit* oops forgot about the Windus... 3 black families in the entire universe, or maybe Mace is related to the Panakas too? :p

    Wouldn't it be more effective, character-wise, if Finn wasn't related to anyone from previous films at all? Wouldn't that make the whole "nobody-who-becomes-somebody" theme more powerful and meaningful? Wouldn't we like Finn -more- for it?

    Finn was taken by the First Order long before it was revealed to the New Republic. This means that Finn's family most likely lived in the Unknown Regions of space. Unless he's related to someone in the old Empire that fled after Jakku it's very unlikely he's connected to anyone that's been in a movie.

    That WOULD make the most sense but the whole theory is similar to Rey and how a lot of people think that she's A Skywalker but there's literally no hard proof (like Kylo has) but we still think that she is no matter what and she has the same thing as Finn's "nobody-who-becomes-a-somebody" trope so my thing is that if Rey has a similar story to Finn and she could be a skywalker, and Finn is so important, he would need some sort of familiar family type with a name that we all know of...otherwise it would be feeling almost like rewriting star wars entirely with new characters...this isn't ANH where every character isn't related to anyone where it was okay with THAT because it was the start to the galaxy.

    Bespin plays a big role in TFA without being directly involved...How did Maz acquire it, how was it taken from the surface of Bespin, Bespin is there and no one knows so either Lando, or if a panaka had something to so with it, was on Bespin, then Finn would have to be involved in some way however indirectly.

    Yes. The lightsabre was in cloud city and therefore there's scope for Lando to crop up, but why does everyone have to be related? (Worst aspect of the prequels for me was Anakin building Threepio) The saga has traced the Skywalker family through 3 generations, so the speculation about Rey is understandable, but speculating that Finn is related to another character simply on account of him being black? that's a slightly uncomfortable step too far. Obviously we'll learn more about his back story and maybe there'll be more info on his lineage forthcoming, but right now it's kind of like saying Mon Mothma is Rey's gran cos they're both white... actually hang on....
