    JJ did say that TFA would be a contained story, and that the characters would give the directors/writers for VIII and IX to work with.. so should we expect there to not be any secrets? ANH didn't really make us scratch our heads.

    It will be self contained in so far as it will be possible to watch without having seen Star Wars before and discern a beginning, middle and an end, but questions will remain, some that only the likes of us will even consider. For example, Snoke as a villain will stand on his own but it is possible we won't definitively find out who he is. For the casual viewer he is the movie's villain, like Vader was in ANH, but we'll know there is still some reveal to come, like there was with Vader. I'm not saying this will be one of the unanswered questions, just using it as an example of the ways that having a self contained movie while at the same time leaving questions unanswered can work.
