This has been going trough my head for a while but I couldn't figure out a good way to present it here. But it's actually kind of obvious. Here is the thing: the sound of the x-wings. There is a massive difference in the shooting sound.

    First video: 5:36
    Second video: 1:33

I feel like the sound from the new trailer is more like the 'fast' shooting sounds from the PT. I'm not too fond of this. I feel like they should keep the iconic sounds the same and not try to tweak on things like that so much. They already changed the lightsaber (Ren's), stormtrooper outfits and vehicles. The OT sounds are pretty much embedded in my nervous system.

Technology changes,.. And The Rebels were scraping by where as the arc fighters in the PT were maintained by top of the line military parts. Not that my thoughts are canon, but if you want an in-universe reason there you go. Production wise no idea minus folly artist vs generated sound.

I discovered something of minor interest.

I recently built a couple of the Revell Resistance T-70 X-Wing models, and they come with a sound effects module that's activated by pressing BB-8's head. It has the sound of the blaster cannons firing, a torpedo being launched, and engine sounds. All the sound effects are clearly OT X-wing sounds.

I also thought the new X-Wing blasters sound new, yet familiar. After the bazillionth time watching the trailer, it hit me(kind of). It sounds somehow like the Slave I firing it's blaster cannons in Attack of the Clones. But it seems they mixed the OT sounds and the Slave I sound together.

I don't think we should be basing our opinions on any sound design based on any of the trailers. A lot of things go into creating those trailers it's not always the same sounds that are in the movie.

I really hope they keep the original X-Wing firing sample, one of my absolute favorites and, in my opinion, it's one of the most iconic sounds. It's as memorable as the Tie howl. Still sounded great in the trailer though.

The new sounds of the Xwing shots and other laser blasts reminds me a lot of the sounds from the Star Wars: Old Republic "return" trailer, especially the sounds from the minigun and the canons fired from the ship that looked Corellian, like the Falcon guns.

That was my first thought when I viewed it the second time. (Was too awestruck the first time to notice anything.) I thought it sounded just like the Slave 1. I think it's a really cool sound effect and it doesn't bother me that it's different from the original.

I think the "new" X-Wing laser sound ist actually the sound from the old X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter games... Haven't played it in at least 15 years but that was the very first thing I thought of when I heard that sound in the trailer.

you can still sort of hear the old sound effect in there, just with added layers for more punch

    I think it sounds sweet

It's called "evolution of the world of star wars," better sound quality, and better filmmaking...and while the old sound might be iconic, it's hard to replicate and would look "off" with the sleekness, whether intentional or not, of 2015 and beyond.
