The old series that ran from the late '70s to the mid '80s was legendary for being pretty out there at times and exploring a very uncharted universe, and as a result had some pretty wild covers, as well as some amazingly beautiful ones, and some that were just really darn fun.

I thought we could post a few of them here for discussion now that the GFFA is in its 3rd iteration beyond the films. Here's some of mine and some reasons why I love them:

This was the first issue I remember having, and one of the first ones I read on my own since I was about 4 at the time. I thought the guy in pink was really funny looking, but he had a lightsaber.

At the time, this was epic to me! A huge Vader playing chess with the characters, and Luke wearing that cool new costume that was more like Han Solo.

One of my favorite comic artists, Walt Simonson did this cover. Very dynamic with Luke at the controls of a TIE, and the reflection in the window. Hard to pass this up at the little newsstand at the grocery store. Yes, back in those days, they sold comics at grocery stores.

A cover worthy of a movie poster! It's got Han Solo, Boba Fett (back when he was cool and not a chump), and even Jawas. Drawn by Tom Palmer, who usually was relegated to inking duties on the interior if I remember correctly.

And the same sort of treatment for Luke, post-ROTJ, with a new crew of characters. Same brilliant Tom Palmer illustrator for the cover.

    These are nice!

I was really into artist Michael Golden at the time (Micronauts, ROM) and he did a couple of covers and issues. Now that you brought this up I'll have to dig them out because I really don't recall any specific covers.

Michael Golden is one of my all time favorite comic artists. I'm not familiar with which ones he might have done.

    There's a great archive over at http://www.rebelscum.com/marvel.asp

In no particular order, my top 9...

In general, I thought the covers for the original ANH adaptation were pretty lousy (and I'm not a fan of Chaykin's work inside the books), but this one has a great composition and resembles the characters better than any of the other initial issues:

Usually not a fan of "postery" comics covers, but this one is worth hanging, IMO:

Carmine Infantino had his issues (his characters got more and more exaggerated over the years and he had no interest in drawing the SW crew to look like the actors), but the one thing he had going as a cover artist and art director was his composition. Look at his foreshortening here!

Simple, to the point, and designed perfectly around the cover copy. And the facial expression is on point. One of Walt Simonson's best.[IMG]

Another sort of silly Infantino job, but his sense of action and perspective can't be beat:

Another Simonson -- great sense of movement here, and it's intriguing (the chance to win a bike doesn't hurt).

This may be the only Bill Sienkiewicz Star Wars work. It has a personal sentiment for me because it's the first issue I received as a subscriber at age 6...(before then, I had no idea that there were Star Wars comics or even comic books -- I think this was one of those school-subscription-sales deals). But it's also just beautiful (even though it has nothing to do with the story inside).

A lot of people weren't a fan of the manga-inspired cartoony art in the last years of "Star Wars," but this sure holds up to me.[IMG]

From the same era -- this is practically abstract, but it's so dynamic. And the cover copy is awesome.
