Luke's screen time theory

I don't think we should overthink the Luke/R2-D2 shot. It's most likely, to me, still in the flashback sequence after Maz tells the story of the student massacre at Luke's Devaronian Jedi Temple.

Again, I hope I'm wrong and that I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm not even asking for Luke to be in the first or second acts (in corporeal form, not as part of a vision, that is). I just want all the storylines to converge at one point. Let us see Luke in action! I don't care how powerful Rey might have the potential to be, without a lifetime's worth of training, how is she going to repel Kylo Ren? Him hesitating and the ground crumbling underneath him is just lazy storytelling a la "Snow White" to me. Give this villain that's figured so prominently in your marketing campaign a fitting climactic moment in this movie, someone who can match and best him. Rey's moments will come aplenty in VIII and IX. Luke never once drew his lightsaber in combat in Ep. IV and nobody seemed to care much. What's wrong with Rey attempting to fight off Kylo but not yet succeeding? It gives her character room to develop, to grow throughout the trilogy.

 

But we've seen R2 at the Resistance base. How did he get to the Island ahead of Rey?

 

I didn't say R2 got to the island before Rey. I meant the shot is of Luke and R2 and is where Rey meets Luke near the end of the film. R2 is likely accompanying Rey to Luke's hideout and the shot we were shown is Luke placing his hand on his little buddy in a sort of "welcome back friend as I have missed you" manner before Luke gets into storytelling mode with Rey.

 

I've been thinking about this a lot and if we only get a tease of Luke in the actual movie, then that will make us look forward to Episode VIII nearly as much as we have Episode VII - they don't want the hype train to lose momentum as the saga continues and not have anything left to offer.

One of the most important rules of entertainment is to never leave the audience completely satisfied, don't let anything become stale. Leave them craving more. I'm almost certain that Luke will only have a very short scene in this film. It may not make sense story wise, but it sure makes sense in the show business world.

 

Fandango is using this image to discuss TFA trailer. The image was also on BostonGlobe.com yesterday. I recall seeing this image a little while back and forget if it is legit. If it is legit, could the duel with Finn begin at a lower elevation then proceed upward to a higher elevation where it is snowing? Look at the image of Rey with the sadz, the Kylo vs. Finn duel, and compare those two images with the first image posted.

I thought it was very interesting that Mark Hamill got second billing on the poster (a step down from his previous billing but not much of one). To anyone's memory, has an actor ever gotten top billing on a movie before when he only had one or two minutes of screen time? Would the filmmakers go to such a length to preserve a mystery that they'd do that with a cameo? Serious question.

 

I wonder about how everyone is paid (rest assured Ford got paid the most for Episode VII). Were they paid upfront for the entire trilogy's worth of work? Is that their contract?

 

It would make sense if she has had her memory wiped ala "CP30"...

 

We saw what happened when JJ Abrams wiped Henry's (Harrison Ford) mind in Regarding Henry. It's not pretty.

id agree if the color pallette and lighting werent so similar. I think the edit is a small gift for those who worry about cameo luke. its subtle but i believe its intentional.

Hey man, I hope you're right. I will say though, in the Luke shot, you can see quite a few rock formations around him. Where are those same rock formations in the Jakku shots?

Nothing earth shattering here, but it's nice to see JJ acknowledge Luke's absence and say there is a reason for it.

Minimal screen time or not, it's obvious he's got something up his sleeve regarding Luke that he doesn't want getting out.

 

Reposting this. One of the very few tidbits he's bothered to raise.

 

The duel looks like snow, but the top picture looks like that planet with the red droid and the castle-looking thing...maybe it's all the same planet, but just with different environments.
