There's an interesting passage in Peecher's Making of ROTJ book which reveals Lucas's own thoughts on this actually...

Richard Marquand (describing the Rebel briefing scene): "I was excited about this scene and about the fact that the Rebels get together to plan their final attack on the Imperial Forces. My concept of the Rebel Briefing Room was a rather beaten-up sort of run-down kind of meeting place. You know, the kind you think of guerrillas having. You don't think of them as having a lot of money, and they have just managed to get a few guns from somewhere, a few planes... tied together with string, that was the kind of vision I had. So I was working with Norman Reynolds on sketches and sets, and he thought it was terrific too.
"Then we showed them to George and he told us, 'No, no, no.You've got it completely wrong. That isn't what I intended at all. Your concept of how the Rebels win is not the way they win. The Rebels,' he said, 'win because they've got the best equipment. They've got these terrific, modified spaceships.' It's like the kid on the block who doesn't have the fanciest bike, but his bike is the best bike because he improved it himself. The Rebels certainly don't have the best or the newest bike on the block, but they have improved it and made it the best."

I think the financial issue was not really the point of the films - I mean, it later became something that was touched upon in the PT (and maybe it is important in all of those Star Wars cartoons that I am not really interested in enough to actually watch) - but I think at the core of the original trilogy was the idea that the people who still had souls, who had passion, would only gather support as the Empire's oppression spread.
"The more you tighten your grip, the more star systems will slip through your fingers..."
They had better stuff because they represented the craftsmen, the tradesmen (the working classes, if you will - the underdogs) and care went into making their vessels the best, whereas, ultimately, everything the Empire had was off a production line.
My personal view is that all of the new Rebel craft and alien species in ROTJ were supposed to represent more and more systems turning away from the Empire and joining the Rebellion to fight the good cause.

"Now on opposite sides of the war, will these two star-crossed lovers reunite, or will duty tear them–and the galaxy–apart." Ha ha ha ha.
Edit: I would say whoever is writing this book is being unoriginal, ha ha.

We don't know how post ROTJ this story takes place. If it's like the other one it will be immediately after the events of ROTJ. That still a 30 yr gap we don't know anything about.

Probably still not going to purchase any young adult cash grabs or novels set between ANH and Empire as they will more than likely not give much away. I personally feel that these pre-novels are just cash grabs as well. At least when they started writing Heir to the Empire and subsequent novels we got new stories and characters. I really don't want any novels set between the OT movies. I will just read the links on the internet boards. Part of me wishes they went with a whole new cast and far after ROTJ. It could have still been Star Wars. Maybe I'm just being bitter. Aftermath does sound like a good novel though.

What do you mean by cash grabs? Aren't all the films and books looking to turn a profit? I think you are looking at things too cynically. I bet they are just publishing young adult and kid books to bring in all ages to TFA. The want young people to know and care about who Luke skywalker is, so they are targeting material towards those demographics.

I know loads and loads of people have said the X-Wing that Poe Dameron is in is black in this shot, but - and trust me I've watched it frame by frame in 1080p numerous times - I still don't see anything through those windows to convince me that it is black, or that it is just a similar shade to the X-Wings in the subsequent shot, or that the engines are just particularly weathered/blackened.

But I'll take everyone's word for it that it is black. I get it, his helmet is black - it makes sense. I don't think that changes anything - it's a moot point.

The point is, I can still definitely see spray around Dameron's craft, consistent with what we see in the next shot, so I think it is a logical conclusion to make to surmise the shot of Dameron is part of the same sequence as the following shot in the trailer. Unless there is another scene where X-Wings race low over a body of water, or through clouds of mist...

I watched them too, here you can see the engines silver in front the rest is black, even his helmet is different.

"Instead, he returns to the Star Destroyer, is apparently berated by his superior and then escapes into a TIE Fighter with the now freed Poe Dameron."

    I was right! HA! HAHAHAHA
