I believe the original plan was for Luke to take a back seat in Episode IX, but the passing of Carrie Fisher now means Mark Hamill is the only lead left from the OT.

I don't think Luke will have a larger role. This trilogy is ultimately about Rey/Finn/Poe/Kylo, but I do believe Luke's part will increase from the original plan. Instead of simply being support for Rey he may play a larger part in how things shake out with Ben.

Questions we don't know the answer to yet. Does Ben know about force ghosts? Has he ever seen one? It's unlikely Rey knows anything about force ghosts. Also, it's quite possible Luke has force ghost powers Yoda/Obi-Wan didn't have.

There's plenty JJ could do with Luke's character that might have to happen with the absence of Leia.

I hope Luke won't have much of a role in the next episode. But you're right about the situation of Carrie Fisher passing. Luke could repace her, but so could Lando or Anakin.

Luke should just appear to advise Rey or to haunt Ren.

Supposedly he's leading a some part of what's left of the Republic fleet. So that's very possible.
I do like the idea that he keeps visiting the Kylo.

Well, if he plays a role at all in IX I guess it will be as big as Yoda's role in VIII.

First, I personally believe Luke must appear in Episode IX.

Not merely because I prefer to see more of Luke but that I believe he has a very crucial and relevant role as a Force advisor to Rey, something, for all her instincts and abilities, I think she needs because the ancient Jedi texts only preach to the past: they cannot, as Luke can, help her avoid the mistakes of the Jedi of Old.

Also, as the end part of TLJ strongly suggested, Luke is not nearly finished with Ben. I think Luke can continue to be both a constructive antagonist (against Kylo) and a protagonist (for/with Ben).

I think Luke Skywalker can still contribute massively to the narrative:

In another thread I mentioned yet another possibility for Luke with regards to the possibility of Snoke somehow being able to return. The speculative idea there was that Snoke is a makeshift immortal who can transfer Force-sensitive host to host and cannot be traditionally eliminated as a result.

In my example, Snoke takes over Hux, who then hunts down Kylo. Ben convinces Rey he needs her to help him rid Snoke by striking Ben down once Snoke tries to transfer to him. Rey deduces Snoke might then try to possess her, and so, for the sake of the galaxy, they agree to sacrifice themselves and strike each other down at the pivotal moment.

When that moment comes, they swing, but then Luke Skywalker returns in corporeal form, blocks both Ben and Rey's lightsabers (with his hands), allows Snoke to take over him (sort of like Neo with Agent Smith in Matrix Revolutions), and Ben and Rey, as commanded by Luke, swing at him.

Luke disappears, and Snoke perishes because he mistakenly possessed a Force Projection. Moments later, Luke reappears as a Force Ghost, thanking Rey and Ben for believing in him and in the power of the Force.

I really think this could be an unprecedented collaboration with a novel way of ridding such dangerous evil, taking nothing less than living and beyond-life Force wielders to prevent Snoke from Menacing the galaxy in Phantom form again.

Well, I think it's one example, of many perhaps, showing how Luke could contribute to the saga's conclusion while letting the primary characters make their own decisions and contribute to the fate of their lives and the future of all.

Hopefully common sense will prevail and Luke's role in IX will be one to two scenes where he appears as a force ghost for an exposition scene and/or to give Rey advice before the climax of the movie.

I think there will be a 3-5 year time jump where Rey has not seen Luke in that time but instead has been haunting Kylo.

I think they will pander to the dissapointed fans and show Luke in a flashback being all bad ass as we never really got to see it.

A good way to do this is maybe have Luke appear to Rey to give some advice before she goes off to end things with Kylo. He can tell her how he started to have an inkling of Kylos power and with that they could do a flash back where he is fighting Kylo in a training session surrounded by the other students.

It could be in this fight that Luke senses the anger and hate Kylo is radiating which is just before Luke confronts him in that flashback from the TLJ.

Luke is tricky. His presence in TFA was chopped down to almost nothing because as such a powerful character he stole every scene he was in. In TLJ, we ended up spending a lot more time on Luke's issues than we did on Rey.

That said, I do want to see him as a Force Ghost. Maybe give him that last chance to pass on what he learned about overcoming failure. Maybe give him a chance to haunt Kylo Ren. Bring in Anakin too while we're at it.

I think it's more likely that with E9, we'll get to see Force Ghost Luke do some crazy stuff in the middle of an actual battle - and possibly even get reacquainted with Old Greenie, or hop into an X-wing with Artoo-Deetoo. They had Force Ghost Yoda shoot lightning out for a reason. Rian Johnson has indicated that, for the story going forward, Luke is way more dangerous to the First Order as part of the Force than he was when he was alive... Which suggests that there's more to the story than for him to pull a Tommy Wiseau and just go "Oh hai, Ben." or "Oh hai, Rey." throughout the two-plus hours that this movie is going to run for.

I fully expect that Luke will have a larger role in E9 than just "ghost who talks for a few minutes and does nothing else". The man's final living act was to give hope to others in the GFFA (the entire point of the Broomboi scene at the end) when we saw that, just before his arrival, everyone had given up on Leia. His legend has been restored - and now I think it's likely that we'll learn that he's been seen a few times in unlikely locations when things were at their bleakest, allowing the Resistance to snatch some crucial victories out of the jaws of defeat. This last movie is about the end of the Skywalkers, but it's also going to have to be about their legacy: one of hope's eternal renewal thanks to their struggles.

Force ghost with wisdom for Rey.

Force ghost Luke who trolls as he haunts Kylo Ren

He'll only interact with those two.

His screen time will be smaller than TLJ but bigger than TFA.

I agree about the ancient texts, and the constructive antagonist and protagonist. I would love a moment where Rey first sees Luke and is like HOLY S*&% what the hell is going on?! i mean the poor girl never experienced rain, how is she going to deal with a force ghost. obviously not too over the top humour but yeah

Personally, I want to see Luke constantly giving Kylo jump scares by bursting out at random moments and shouting "Boo!"--just to throw Kylo off balance, ya know?

Personally, I think Luke will have a bigger role than any previous Force Ghost did. He needs to be part of the story, as he will be important to teach Rey, troll Ren and overlook the Rebellion from afar.

I would see a total of 10-15 minutes screen time spread out to be just right. Plus, please make him smile more. Smile for the camera Luke! :D

    Does Yoda have nipples, Greg?

I posted in the Leia Conundrum thread about what I think could be an incredible Force ghost appearance in Episode IX by Luke ... really want this to happen for both Luke and Leia:

I am all for Force ghost Luke in Episode IX, but if this is all we got, I would be very happy.
