A few thoughts on the rating for TFA

    1. I suspect it will be rated PG-13. Not all PG-13 are the same and I suspect that although it will be PG-13 it will be ok for younger children as Disney will want the younger fans to drive toy sales

    2. If it is PG, that will be ok. I disagree with the idea that if it is PG the movie will suffer. A good story with good acting is what makes a movie good regardless of the rating. The rating will not have an impact on the quality of this movie. The quality of JJ's script and the ability of the cast to bring it to life will and I believe it will turn out good whether PG-13 or PG

I agree with this in just trying to say there's no real difference between the two anymore. very few parents are hesitant about taking 5-8 yr olds to pg-13 these days

To be clear, the PG-13 rating did not exist when either Empire or Jedi were released. It came after that in 1984. They would not have been pg 13 anyway, but just to be clear.

I understand exactly where you are coming from, I have quite a large family (all younger than myself) and they are/were not allowed to watch certain shows. However, with some things such as Star Wars, Marvel, Adventure time(?) However, I think not letting a kid experience these things will lead to them not being as developed with emotions as some other kids when they start their schooling. I'm a year into my studies to become a Primary school teacher, and the effect that parents have on a child's cognitive ability with things they are allowed to see/watch/do is really noticeable. Completely understand certain scenes, but certain "tones" of the a movie shouldn't be blocked in my opinion because it opens up a childs mind to get comfortable with right and wrong.

Although it does come down to the kid, and if you see it having a negative effect you could always tone down what he is watching, you'll never know until you allow it I guess.

If you don't mind me asking, what exact scenes in the PT are you worried about him seeing? Would you consider doing a remastered-cut yourself so he can enjoy it without maybe the 1-2 scenes? You can download a lot of programs online and it may only take you 10 or so minutes. I could help you if need be.

EDIT: I understand I'm not a parent, I would of course make sure I read reviews from other parents before taking a kid in, esp with the fact it seems to have a darker tone.

Also, I think as a parent the only thing I would be worried about is over sexualisation in blockbuster movies (as the guy who posted before mentioned transformers)

Henceforth my fellow follower of the Force why I said "And had there been a PG-13 rating during the OT". I was speaking hypothetically \m/ a few posts down

I think TFA and the entire new trilogy will be rated PG-13. And I don't think it will negitivly effect ticket sales at all. I think a PG rating could actually discourage certain people from buying tickets. Maybe not many people, but definitely some. These days, if we want any action that is beyond an occasional explosion and/or very light fighting, it almost has to be rated PG-13. I think a PG rating would give some people the impression that it's a Disney film that is made for kiddies that is targeted solely at children's enjoyment. Not an action/adventure movie that doesn't have to comprimise on the action and is made with young people in mind, but can be enjoyed by anyone. And for everyone saying that Disney wouldn't make a PG-13 movie that a lot of kids will potentially be watching, have you never heard of 'Pirates Of The Caribbean'? All of those movies are rated PG-13 and feature some action and elements that can be somewhat intense at times, and yet there are Legos, action figures, Halloween customes, birthday party supplies and entire gift shops at Disney World filled with Pirates Of The Caribbean toys and Jack Sparrow Mickey mouse ears, all aimed at children.

    Extremely fake

I have said it before and I will say it again. The Ratings Board only accepts FINISHED films, then they send the film back with the list of scenes they would like cut or altered. Negotiation occurs, and eventually a rating is given

I'm sure the film will be fine with whatever rating it gets, both in story and ticket sales.

AotC was PG and we still got the arena battle and even Jango's on-screen decapitation. And that decapitation was lingered on for awhile! PM had Maul getting cut in two and Qui-Gon's death. RotS was an obvious PG-13 for Dookoo's decapitation and the scene where Anakin was practically burned alive (and probably for those younglings, RIP). You have to admit, the MPAA has been pretty lenient with Star Wars in the past and even if the film gets a PG-13, it shouldn't have anything too gruesome in it.
But you could expect someone's hand to get cut off ;)

The whole motion picture rating system seems so arbitrary for what's Parental Guidance and what's Parental Guidance-13, just as what's Restricted and what's No Children Under 17.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but I think Disney might have enough sway that they'll get whatever rating they want. I don't believe that having a PG Star Wars will affect box office sales in the slightest.

I'm Not sure it will matter in the end. How many shows on TV are in that PG 13 range, yet they are watched by children and adults alike with little or no concern?

In the end it is always the responsibility of the parent to guide the child. If they simply don't know if they want their kids to see a movie, then go see it without them and make an informed decision. Simple as that.

Will the rating affect the story? No. And the arguement "...but they cant show such and such..." Doesn't hold water. Look at Jaws, we didn't see the shark until the movie was almost over and it made it all the better.

The power of suggestion (old Jedi mind trick--haha) is a strong ally.

WTF? Who in their right mind lets a 6-year-old play CoD?

Personally, as a parent, I'm really conflicted about the whole thing. I'd love for LFL to take it way darker, along the lines of Jedi Knight, The Force Unleashed, etc. and really get into the feel of it, make it look gritty like Children of Men, tackle some seriously deep, philosophical, adult issues, but at the same time, I completely understand that the Star Wars movies are essentially family movies, so that's never going to happen with the core movies. However, what do I know? Maybe they will eventually take some of the core movies much darker and still expect kids to see them at home? After all, Halo and CoD have clear 18-ratings on them (and for bloody good reason), and yet these are available to purchase at most toy stores these days:

So am I alone in this? Does this make me an over-protective parent, for sheltering my kids at age 8 and 5 from the horrors of realistic war, and not encouraging them to replicate it in play form? I don't know. But I do know that if the rating is 12A (equivalent to your PG-13) or under, my kids will both be seeing TFA and the sequels.

That's not even a question that Disney has that power. Every major studio has the power to sway ratings up or down a level, and the MPAA is far more willing to work with major studies. It's our poor indie films that have to fight an uphill battle with the ratings agency.

It's a lot better now than it used to be after the ratings board got outed by "This Film is not yet Rated"
