Wasn't it enough that we had the original cast, modern versions of familiar starships & factions and similar planet landscapes to the ones in the OT? Did he really need to rehash moments from ANH, too?

Well, true, but you also have to think of tf partially as a business...if you are releasing something that everyone loves but it has to be all-Jew, than how do you make it so you don't alienate those people all together but also bringing in classic pop culture moments so new fans wouldn't also be left out ? It's a tough path .

I saw it for the 5th time last night... none of those references really bother me. I just enjoy the experience of watching everything that's happening & looking for things I haven't noticed before on each repeat viewing. I almost feel like JJ didn't give us enough time to look at stuff... like the D'Qar base shots of people scrambling to their ships... there's like 100 extras in a 1 second shot (lol). Part of me thinks that's really cool but I also wish they'd have just let the camera sit there for a few extra seconds to take everything in.

There are a few things that bother me over the course of repeat viewings though. The first time I saw the Kylo Ren/ Finn/ Rey lightsaber battle I was very impressed, but I think it had more to do with seeing new things (watching trees get chopped down, having Finn scream in agony as Ren's exhaust port is slicing through Finn's shoulder (which I still enjoy). But something about the fight over all just feels boring to me in spots now. I think the worst is when the ground breaks apart... something about that scene just lacks substance... like as if they couldn't find a better way to end the fight. But this is all a little nitpicky, it's still a million times better than the PT duels.

The other things that bother me are nitpicky as well... 3 specific shots.

    1. Finn & Rey running to the falcon (which should have been the real falcon on set, it really does show that it's not the real thing) & When the falcon takes off/ is scratching the surface of Jakku... it just doesn't look real to me... that whole shot bothered me the first time I saw it too... though once it takes off it looks fine.

    2. Rathtars could have been done practically.

    3. Some of the aerial combat shots look flimsy to me, like as if the X wings & Ties had no weight to them. I really wish they had used models for some of the shots, especially for things like the close up ground shots (Star Killer base turrets & things like that). I have a feeling JJ would have preferred to do it that way but perhaps it wasn't in Disney's budget to allow for the construction of large scale miniature sets?

    Ok I'm adding a 4th & 5th & 6th:

    4. Snoke: I can live with it but I just wish it were practical.

    5. Maz: Same thing... I can live with it, there are some shots that look real, & others that don't. Her hands looked amazing if those were CGI.

    6. Ok this is reeeeeeeeeeeeally nitckpicky:

Light bulbs... I see what looks like terrestrial light bulbs in the resistance base interior... specifically the shot of C3P0 talking to BB8, the camera is looking up @ C3P0 & I swear I could almost see the GE logo on the bulb above him.

But you know what? There are things that bother me about OT effects at times as well.
My girlfriend who's a very casual audience member remarked after we saw TFA... that it was her favorite film & she thought the FX were the best out of all that she'd seen... though when I told her the OT was filmed in the 70's & 80's she couldn't believe it. So I'm aware I'm coming from the perspective of knowing how effects are done so I can readily identify things that would go over most people's heads... so in that regard I'm aware that I'm like the nitpickiest of the nitpickiest.

Is there a reason why the thread got removed from the sticky thread section?

Without knowing for sure, I'm going to speculate that it was released from sticky to make room for further and newer upcoming threads that will be dealing with VIII, as the JJ thread is over 2 years old and focused on VII.

I get what you're saying , but every Subforum (every sequel movie) has its own sticky section.

But they are INTENTIONAL mirroring elements. Nothing to do with a lazy writing.

DOES LUCAS KNOWS THAT POETRY DOESN'T HAVE TO RHYME ON A SUPERFICIAL LEVEL?

It depends on what kind of poetry Lucas had in his mind. Assuming that SW was influenced by the arthurian mythology, I don't think its "poetry" should be compared to a modern idea of free verse. So, yes, the reference to a poem "in rhymes" perfectly fit Lucas' epic, chevalresque, mythologic vision.

I've said in other threads that Abrams and Kasdan made a big mistake in making the villains copies of Vader and the Empire.

I love TFA regardless but it could have been spectacular on a level of spectacular not previously known of.

There is something in the film that really annoys me though. A director giving friends roles in movies happens a lot and I can ignore it everywhere except in TFA.

Ackbar has practically nothing to say or do when it makes more sense to give him Admiral Statura's dialogue during the planning of the Starkiller base attack. And Wexley was another unnecessary character - anything he say or does should have been given to the alien fighter pilot.

Star Was news more aliens front and centre. Not more humans.

I actually think it might have been pretty good to have the roles reversed...have the Republic be the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys' be the rebels. Even better to have neither side 'black or white' but go more for shades of grey.
