I'm in the "Don't overthink it" camp.

The title says The Rise of Skywalker and 99% of the public who make a movie gross $2 billion dollars has zero clue and give zero sh!tz about people like us theorizing about this on a fan based web community. All nine movies are about the Skywalker saga and this one will transparently focus on the current generation's member of the bloodline who has this obvious name.

There was no real twist in Episodes 1,2,3,4,7 or 8. 5 was "I am your Father" and 6 was pretty weak with "You are my sister." That didn't really even drive the story other than as a reason for Luke to flirt with the power of the darkside in the throne room.

I fully expect Disney to be obvious and keep it from confusing the 99%. The most likely outcome is Force Ghost Luke telling Rey the truth, just like Ben finally did with Luke.

My feeling about the tie fighter and the flip is that Kylo and Rey are provoking each other, showing their power to each other but without the intention of attacking or really hurting each other... perhaps preparing for war, and yes, maybe training.

As for Palpatine, I like this idea that he will seduce Rey somehow and manipulate her... maybe with some information about the drunk junk traders or about some injustice done to them... perhaps by the resistance. Kylo could be the one who opens her eyes about Palpatine and tells her not to trust him.

Who is the person from this generation that goes by Skywalker? There is literally nobody alive named Skywalker...which is probably why one will need to RISE.

Thus why Rey takes the name Skywalker. That’s my theory. I’m going to stick to it until the movie in December proves me wrong and shows that I don’t know what I’m talking about :D

If we as an audience learn that Rey is of the Skywalker bloodline in TROS, that information cannot come from a source that we would recognize because we know that Luke, Leia, Han, and Ben/Kylo had no familiarity with her prior to their respective first meetings with her.

I thinks there almost no chance she’s of the bloodline. If she’s the Skywalker in the title it will be because she takes the name for whatever reason.

There is a line of Skywalkers that we know absolutely nothing about (Shmi's paternal line), and the theory I am now subscribing to is that Rey will be revealed to be of that line (through a male sibling of Shmi's) because I believe that it's the simplest explanation for the title in terms of in-film exposition.

The simplest is Luke "Rises" from the grave so to speak.

My speculation is Luke finds out Palpatine is still alive and does his own resurrection.

I think we all need to remember this line from Snoke...

^ Again, the titles of both of the previous films in the Sequel Trilogy have ultimately referred to Rey, and the simplest way for the title of Episode IX to refer to her (as well) is for her to be a bloodline Skywalker by way of Shmi's paternal line.

It doesn't contradict anything that we learned about her in either TFA or TLJ and doesn't require a lot of exposition because it can be conveyed to the audience through dialogue and/or a short scene that expands on the day she was left behind.

Ren's Silencer was probably destroyed on Snoke's Command Ship when Holdo went all Kamikaze!

I will eat my socks if JJ somehow can explain how Rey is a Skywalker by way of Shmi's never spoke of before brother. Sorry man, that speculation is out of left field. Definitely not simple.

It can be revealed without having to be explained within the film itself; that's the reason it works and why it's the simplest explanation for the title "The Rise of Skywalker".

And it's not really my theory; it came from an online friend of mine who is a massive Star Wars fan and hosts a SW podcast called Aggressive Negotiations, and I've just subscribed to it after thinking it through (especially in light of what we've learned about Episode IX since my friend came up with it).

Half Blood Prince would like a word with you. Also I find your definitive "point" about Leia not being a Skywalker pretty strange. She is Anakin's daughter. She is a Skywalker just as much as Luke. Kylo is just as much a Skywalker as any child of Luke would have been.

I don't know what are the rumors/spoilers you're thinking about precisely. So you might have more info than I do.
But personally... I believe that the "medieval weapons" we've heard about are the weapons of that Clan.
That is not to say that there are not the KOR in the movie, just that maybe some details about the 2 groups got "twisted".
To me, it looks like that the guy that Kylo smashes down is holding a weird sword... and in Rey's vision the "clan leader"
he killes looks pretty much like the guy we see in the teaser. They both wear a cloak, the settings seem to match too.
We still miss the rain, but... it could start raining at some point.

That's the basis of my speculation...

Spoilers for the TIE and fixing mask scenes by MSW. Don't click on it if you don't want to be spoiled.

    • They heard that the TIE Fighter scene with Rey and Kylo doesn’t go well as Kylo Ren was seen in front of a burning, crashed TIE in Jordan.

    • There was a pre-visual shot of Kylo Ren jumping out of the TIE Fighter and came down Obi Wan style in ‘Revenge of the Sith’ then his lightsaber ignited and he and Rey fight.

They heard that Kylo Ren put his helmet back together but the teaser shows somebody else doing it. Thinks they’re separate shots and the sequence is ritualistic as he heard the Knights of Ren kind of dance around it.

If you want to talk about those spoilers, please use spoiler tags to not ruin the fun for other people.

There's more than some truth in this. Personally, I would love - and I know I am in a minority - a bitter sweet finale.
All the Skywalkers dead and the legacy passed to other people beacuse of virtue and not because of blood.
A "spiritual" rise if you want... and that not only among the "Jedi" but the Republic too (to honor Leia and Padme as well).
That to me, would make them all even more special. The "special family" that in special times, saved the galaxy and when the job is done
(because there's not a "special threat" anymore) then they are gone...
But you are right... that's what the GA would think. However LF and Disney can take that risk. The risk of "misleanding" somehow
people expectation. It's up to them...
    However...

"A thousand of generations lives in you" -> Luke ROS trailer
" If you live long enough you see the same eyes in different people" "The belonging you seek in not behind, it is ahead" -> Maz TFA

    Add to picture Sheev.
Even putting aside the latest revelations/news about the C.O. prophecy that came out with Claudia Grey's novel...
I believe there's some weir stuff going on....

(also, "This will start to make things right" is the first line of TFA and of the ST).

Like I said, the only way to put it all together without retconing TLj and TFA too (because I personally beleive that that movie too
made clear that Rey wasn't Luke's or Leia's child) would be finding a way to link her to Anakin and teh "special" circumstanes of his birth.
I am not calling for time travel... But I can se something more "mystic".
For instance... if Anakin was indeed "created by Palpatine" maybe that event poisoned the Force.
Maybe that is such and interference in the Force Will... that even tho he fulfilled the prophecy ultimatelly
there's still something on a "cosmic level" that has to be fixed.

Maybe it's time to start from ground 0. And that was also part of the prophecy...
maybe not only the Skywalkers but the Jedi too have to die - as Luke said in TLJ - but because of something more specific and meaningfull (in my eye at least)
than an old master's disillusion - so that a new truly balanced cycle can start.

    Something under those line...

And if so, if the dead Jedi merge with the Force, and if the Force creates life as well... then maybe she's that: she's thousand of generations
of Jedi more literally than we think and because of that "chosen by Anakin" not to end his task, but to star phase two.
Or she is Anakin second coming.
Or she is another Shmi. Just because the first time things didn't go as they were supposed to go...
there are may chances/ideas to play it...

Nobody is arguing she doesn’t share the blood. But she’s not a Skywalker by name. She’s not a Skywalker by upbringing. She was never raised by a Skywalker. In the book Bloodline, she’s honoring her adopted fathers memory and detests her relationship with Vader so much she never tells her son that Vader was his Grandpa. Blood doesn’t define you. She’s an Organa, Kylo is a Solo. They will NEVER be referred to in name as SKYWALKER therefore the title isn’t about them.

Again, in the context of naming a film you don't refer to them as something they aren't called (literally) ever in the other films.

    TFA:
Rey: "Luke Skywalker? I thought he was a myth."

    TLJ:
Luke Skywalker: "I failed. Because I was Luke Skywalker. Jedi Master. A legend."
Rey: "The galaxy may need a legend."

And this is exactly what happens at the end, with Force projected Luke facing of against Kylo.

So if TROS takes a place about a year after TLJ, then it's more than enough time for tales of this event to spread across the galaxy. Hell, we see (the beginnings of) this in TLJ's epilogue.
If this story is "trending" that much around the galaxy, this can be seen as the Rise (of the legendary tales of) Skywalker.

In that vein, "Skywalker" may become a symbol, or a mantle a certain group of people might take on.

They really pick their titles well, and we are probably overthinking this. If I recall correctly, only two characters in the entire saga were ever referred to as "Skywalker" in the movies, one of which more so. These are Anakin and especially Luke. I may be mistaken and there could be more characters referred to as "Skywaker", and I'd love to be corrected if that's the case.

When I think of Skywalker, what comes to mind immediately is Luke, and I imagine the majority of fans. The Emperor called him "Skywalker", and so does Snoke. Anakin was mostly referred to as "Anakin" through the PT and then mostly as Darth Vader in the OT. I don't recall hearing many times the word Skywalker referring to Anakin in the movies, but I may be mistaken.

Snoke may have many problems, till this point, but he does say striking things that seem to be very relevant to the ST. And one of the most striking ones, for me, was: "Skywalker lives! And as long as he does, hope lives in the galaxy.". Luke is now dead, so one would assume hope isn't alive anymore (but we know that's not how it ends!).

Luke was figuratively, if not literally, the "New Hope" in the first Star Wars movie. Of course there are always double meanings, and the new hope could in fact be the Death Star plans stolen in Rogue One events. In TLJ there's a double meaning to the title, again. The Last Jedi is Luke, and then Rey after he's gone at the very end.

But then things start to get murky. Kenobi says in ESB: "That boy (Luke) was our only hope.". But then Yoda says: "No, there is another.". And this "other" hope was never fully realized, or needed as a Jedi at that stage. Of course he meant Leia, and while Leia did have a significant role in the Alliance's success, mostly via the Ewoks, Luke still had the major part saving the day, although everyone had a significant role (Lando, Han, etc, the droids, etc). So, could Leia be the new hope mentioned in IX after Luke is gone, by herself or through her son? Or is Rey that new hope?

It's really hard to see at this stage, and I applaude JJ and co for coming up with such a rich and interesting title.

Anything can happen really. Luke could become a new type of more "alive" force-ghost by the end of IX, and the title could be that, the Rise of Luke, after all, he is "Skywalker". Or, it could be the "Skywalker side" in Ben Solo that rises from the dark? That are lots of great and convincing posts about that possibility in the forums. Rey can still be a Skywalker in some way, as well, by blood or affinity. And, there's the new "Skywalker Order" theory as well.

That all said, the simplest and more elegant explanations are usually the best. The title seems to be about Luke. This whole trilogy seemed to be about Luke passing the torch to Rey. If we look at it from a symmetry point of view, Rey was "The Force Awakens". Luke and then Rey were The Last Jedi. Could "The Rise of Skywalker" be about Luke alone? It would be Rey <--> Luke / Rey <--> Luke.

But that doesn't make sense going forward right? Luke to be the main protagonist of the last movie of the trilogy? Luke is dead, he seems to have a small part in IX and the ST is about the new generation. If the PT was about Anakin, the OT was about Luke, then the ST must be about Rey. Rey must be a Skywalker somehow, and one Skywalker will live through the IX events because: "Skywalker lives! And as long as he does, hope lives in the galaxy.", but now probably a she.

This is, IMHO, the best interpretation, where Skywalker becomes synonym for hope. Kylo wanted to kill the past; Rey accepted it. Snoke wanted to kill both Skywalker and hope. Neither worked, his legend has risen.

Thinking over the past few days, I started realizing how much TRoS trailer is actually in line with TLJ.
