I actually liked the premiere. The humor worked for me. I love all the neat aliens and enjoy some of the side characters.

Kaz is such a ninny and terrible at spying that its hard for me to root for him. Neku outright blowing his cover didn't help either.

How do you guys like the main character? If I don't start enjoying it more in the next 2 eps, I might bail.

I don't have an issue with Kaz. He's not perfect, but he fits in well with the rest of the cast.

I'll take the middle ground. I think Kaz is the weakest part of the show and that his character is slightly at odds with the New Republic Navy pilot that the show initially shows him off to be.* As he is right now, Kaz doesn't fit in. But on the flip side, that gives him the most room for growth.

Kaz's strength is piloting, and by limiting the amount of flying Kaz does the show is forcing the character to grow as a mechanic, a spy, and a person who can take initiative.

I think the main problem with Kaz is that a lot of his misfortune is just bad luck or other people's fault that he gets the blame for, which is the type of humor the show seems to be going for. This might work for the kids the show is aimed at, but for adults it falls a little flat.

Kaz is not Ahsoka (a warrior monk trained from birth learning about the brutality of war) or Ezra (a street-rat learning about a mystical power while rebuilding a family). The threats he's facing are not as...tangible at all moments. This is about a young man trying to be out on his own with a little too much on his plate at the moment.

I'm not a giant fan on how the show is a slow-burn so far, but every episode seems to be better than the last, so I'm encouraged for the future.

*Which I think is a different problem entirely. The goal of the first episode and those first few scenes were to show us:
    1. Kaz is a good pilot
    2. Kaz's father helped him get into the Navy

I think we skipped the second point and as an audience assumed that Kaz being in the military would mean he's proficient in other areas.

Kaz being in the Navy doesn't bother me. The NR was at peace for at least 20 years and doesn't expect a major war any time soon. In a situation like this recruitment and service standarts tend to go down. Plus, Kaz's father is senator, who "helped" him along the way.
Kaz is going to learn things and mature as the show goes. Like responsibility, how to deal with loss etc.

he sucks don't get me wrong but at least he is not a prodigy or a complete failure it is super rare to see a balance of these to traits in tv show. there is nothing special about him either he is very ordinary.

he's definitely 'skiddish', but he will grow and develop as the season/s go on.

    early days yet ;)

I do like that he is not flawless. I just think having him drop an engine in the ocean twice, and his constant buffoonery, would seriously wear on Yeager. And just ditching work for a day....well maybe that way Kaz couldn't destroy anything. Many of Kaz's problems are solved through no effort of his own, like the turtle engineers fixing the part...

Some things are just over the top goofy. Kaz is supposed to be a spy and Neeku blows his cover immediately. Kaz sneaks around by walking on tip-toes in an exaggerated manner. He can be flawed without being moronic.

Kaz isn't my favorite character, but he doesn't bother me at all. he's a good entry point for this world: the naif.
as others have stated, i think the point is that he'll mature into the role. : D

as for Kaz not solving his own problems, i don't know if that's necessarily true.
he often solves his problems, or he gets help from his friends (i.e. having friends helps to solve problems).
it's a show more about teamwork rather than individual achievement.
frankly, i think we need that. XD

Resistance is said to be a show on a cast of misfits, so yeah, I don’t get the rage people have about his character.

I haven't watched "Resistance" yet, but I saw some clips of Kaz doing stuff.

He's definitely not flawless. He seems to be childish and clumsy (please correct me if I'm wrong!). On the big screen movies I would dislike this, because life depends on his actions. But for a kids show it's okay I guess and furthermore the good thing about series is: his character can still get better and better.

Well, I was a DEVOUT Clone Wars and Rebels watcher, and I couldn't get past the first half of the premier and I fell asleep...and I still have the rest of the episodes since in my DVR que that are unwatched, sadly.

It wasn't necessarily Kaz that turned me off, it was the package that didn't work for me...because it's undeniably "Kid-oriented", and I just couldn't watch it, which makes me sad, but I don't suppose I'll be missing out if I never go back to it. :(

you know that you have to hand your "i'm a fan" certificate back if you never watch it? hehe :p

it's definitely aimed at a slightly younger audience than rebels, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.. especially if they swing the other way with Mandalorian and make it a bit more adult orientated.

I can actually relate to him a lot. Being both autistic and dyspraxic, I can relate to both the clumsiness, the social awkwardness, and his intense interest and skill in piloting crowding out other endeavors such as mechanics and dull drone work. I wonder why so few people can take seriously the idea of a single-minded, but awkward and clumsy person having the potential for doing good. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and level of ability, I'm sure he may grow a bit wiser, but I think it's sad that people look at him and think "he's too much of goofball klutz to have worth as a hero." It's very exclusionist thinking, and I find it very sad.

I personally find this show to be eye-gougingly bad. . . . or more ear-splitting bad, I suppose, because I do enjoy the animation as a stand alone.

The show is not meant for me as an audience (geered to the younglings), but that has never stopped me from channeling my inner child and nerd before.

I haven't been able to turn this on for five minutes since about the 5th/6th episode.

Kaz is a good character, but he makes a terrible spy. He barely knows how to shoot a blaster.
