For some time it has been apparent that Anakin/Luke's saber will be playing a big part in TFA.
Many of us have wondered why. What could the significance of it be?
I have a theory I'd like to share.

In the Shattered Empire comics it establishes that the Force can leave a signature on objects. Now, it has been speculated already that the saber could be used to locate Luke - but I can't see how a saber that Luke hasn't had in well over 30 years could enable someone to locate him on a distant world that he never went to with said saber.

What if it's used to search for another hidden world where Luke's former master lived though? Yes, I'm referring to Yoda and the Dagobah System.

Whilst on Dagobah, Luke enters a cave underneath a tree - a place that Yoda describes as a 'domain of evil'.
It is the only time within the movies that a place/object as been described as evil - as having a connection to the Force.

At the heart of my theory is the idea that a Force user with the ability to have Force visions through touching objects, is seeking out Dagobah - and the tomb that rests there. We're told in Shattered Empire that Leia has this ability. One could speculate that her child would have that too. You know where I'm going with this...

What if Kylo seeks the saber as he believes it will lead him to the evil cave - where an evil spirit or essence exists? Some power that he (and Snoke?) are looking to awaken?

In some early leaks it was suggested that Luke's saber would 'open a tomb'. That seemed far fetched to me. But what if it simply leads Kylo to the tomb? The cave itself is most definitely a structure and has always been curious to me. And there are still question marks over why Yoda chose Dagobah. How he even knew about it in the first place? In Leigh Brackett's TESB script (that Kasdan re-wrote) the crystal in Luke's saber contained the coordinates of Dagobah. Could Kasdan have re-visited this idea (among others he surely had in writing TESB)?

In images released by Lucasfilm of a concept meeting, Luke entering the cave can be clearly seen on the TV (top left). Here's the pic:

Make of that what you will.

If anyone has seen my posts on this site they will see I'm of the view that 'Snoke is Plagueis'. Many things lead me to that but one of the main points was in regard to the Acolytes of the Beyond. It strikes me that this story will be dealing with the idea of resurrection or at the very least dealing with spirits in 'the beyond' in some way. We're also being teased with descriptions of Snoke has Zombie like etc. I'm just wondering now whether the cave on Dagobah is the key to all this...

It'd be awesome if Snoke were Plagueis.

Well its evil because as Yoda said it is strong with the Dark Side of the Force.

After a few moments I realized that the question was more complex than my answer warrants. Its late. As @Solo said if it is revisited in the ST a reason would need to be shared.

Great thread. Best theory I've read in awhile tbh.

This would be a great question for the ST to answer.

I could see it being answered over a period of the three films.

There's a lot of potential here. I'm actually going to be slightly disappointed now if they don't answer that question. :)

Well informed theory. I was always under the impression that Yoda conjured the whole vision in the cave to teach Luke a lesson.

Why indeed. I'm sure there is an EU reason but nothing has been eluded to in the films. We're told it's evil and that's that.
I think the events that take in TESB will influence the storyline of TFA - due to Kasdan's involvement and it being the fans favourite.
It also seems that the Force is centre stage in this film and it's in TESB that the themes surrounding the force are fleshed out.

Considering the title of the film the writers will surely be exploring the Force is even greater detail than we have witnessed before.
As I mentioned, it's already being expanded upon in the new comics.
I'm not one for the overly supernatural stuff. I've always thought of the Force in a more scientific rather than religious way - life creates the energy/Force and people with a connection to it wield it's power through either good or evil. I've also been slightly confused by peoples opposition to midichlorians. It's just a name given to something that has existed since we discovered that Vader was Luke's father and the Force was strong in their family. There was clearly a genetic link there and then.

What I am getting at here is that I don't view an evil cave as a miraculously and naturally evil place. Something must have happened there or reside there that is 'evil'.
Now, considering what I said above about the supernatural, the whole Force Ghost thing kind of went against that.
But upon reading the early draft of TESB I discovered a description of the ghost state that kind of made more sense to me.
Kenobi tells Luke that he isn't a ghost. His reality is different and he exists in a different part of the universe. Here it is:

    Force.jpg

This in my view can tie in with the idea of an ancient evil being retaining their spirit in the 'real world'.
We have been told that a Sith cannot achieve immortality (not directly in the films although it was cut dialogue from ROTS), however, this is from the pov of a Jedi and could simply be talking about the Jedi means of immortality. To be honest, I am not even talking about immortality with the Sith - just cheating death, albeit temporarily.

What if a Sith, eg Plagueis, was able to retain his consciousness by 'attaching it' to an object or place?
    It's a thought!

In reference to the cave it is also worth mentioning that in the aforementioned early script of TESB, Yoda implies to Luke that Dagobah was once a place where Jedi were trained. So it could just be an old Jedi temple. However, again - the evil that lurks there could still warrant a story relevant to the ST - whether it be about Plagueis or not.

EDIT: Just to back up the idea that the Leigh Brackett script has been revisited, there is a great description of Darth Vader's castle which sounds exactly like TFA concept art of the castle by the sea. Potentially the castle that Luke is 'residing' on Skellig...

What if Dagobah is where Plagueis and Sidious manipulated the force to create Anakin. This event scared or like you said left and imprint on the cave.
