    This. This this this.

Seriously, no commander in the heat of battle has ever explained their command decisions to subordinates.
That is a simple solution that would have made the movie significantly better. The 2 of them (plus BB-8) run a mission which actually succeeds so it isn't a 45 minute complete waste of time.
Casual fans know him from "it's a trap!" which has become one of the OT's iconic lines. Serious fans know him as the Fleet Admiral from the climactic battle of the OT. Kinda an important role.

We do see him on the bridge, so we know he's still obviously instrumental to the Resistance. But it would've been cool to have more.

I can't decide if this would've been a great moment or a total cheese fest:

As the TIEs close in on the bridge, Ackbar alone looks up and gets a visual confirmation of them.
"It's-" he starts, but is cut short by the resulting explosion.

Yeah, probably a cheese fest. But I'd be into it.

Well theme of the movie was "Failure is the greatest teacher"... so Poe had to fail big time in this movie to become the leader of the Rebellion in Episode 9. Maybe the first scene with the bombers could have been part of the climax and at a bigger scale ending up as a major setback for the Resistance and have Poe redeem himself in 9.

As for Finn's arc... maybe he could have been the one that goes away and come back to save his friends at the end of the movie. But, Episode 7 left Finn with an allegiance to Rey, not the Resistance.

seriously? Ackbar deserved better? he had some screen time in RotJ and a tiny amount in TFA; he's essentially a periphery creature character that was sensationalized for saying, "it's a trap!"

i liked Ackbar just fine, he was a cool example of an alien character and opened the door for the Mon Calamari race being around, but i can't say i had any real attachment to old Gial.

personally, i would not have had him in the ST at all. same with Nien. i feel like more than anything they were included as fan service, much like the cringey Evazan/Baba cameo in R1, or Chewie having inexplicably fought in the Clone Wars as shown in RotS.

with all that being said, i really hope they don't put the rancor in episode 9 only to truly kill it; that would break my heart.

I'll go ahead and say it. "Ackbar-Shmackbar". There. I said it.

Dude wasn't even a minor character. Not hating here, I have nothing but respect for the Mon Cal, but he meant nothing to the story. He ain't no Lando, and WHERE is Lando? There's no Lando, but uppity fans be all worked up over Ackbar? (I'm one who also gives nary a blast about Lando....so)

Ackbar! (I'll give you a second to digest that, if you will)

If TLJ was SO BAD that your argument is "Ackbar deserved so much bet.......WHO IS ACKBAR?"

On second rant....I now feel the need to know his backstory and have a trilogy built around him.

Ackbar. For God's sake, it was Ackbar!!! (Once again....total respect)

I was just thinking that maybe making someone named ackbar do a suicidal strike against the enemy might not have been a good idea.

The only problem I have with Ackbar's death is that we had to be told he died by a character later in the movie. The events happened so fast and the movie doesn't really put into perspective who else was on the bridge the moment it was destroyed. It doesn't give a proper send off to a Rebellion hero, it doesn't give a proper send off to a character that was a fan favorite. I am not saying that they needed to change how he died, but, a good, 2 second, shot of him on the bridge, or even standing right next to Leia (handing her something or asking her something) as they are sucked out into space. Something, that would give the audience a clue that this wasn't just about Leia.

Instead, on the first viewing, I completely missed the point that he was on the bridge as well, until, it was mentioned minutes later. I think it was a poor choice that takes a moment of reflection on a fan favorite character from the fans.

The OG fanbase loved Ackbar, it was a slap to the face to all of us to give him an off-screen death.

If they're going to needlessly bring back minor characters like Evazan/Baba.. then they should show respect to the characters who had way more screen time.

I was also a massive fail to have this delivered by Holdo, the worst new character in Star Wars.

Leia was talking to Ackbar on the bridge right before she and Kylo started their sensing of each other.

This article sums up my thoughts on the matter. While outside of films he is an important character, within the films themselves he's just at the background. Nothing more.

If they can make the prequels revolve around a throwaway character (Boba Fett) due to fan feedback, then Ackbar should have been treated better..

I think we could debate (as we had for about a decade) that C3PO and Boba Fett both 'deserved better', as in....not even included in the PT.

    lol

I don't think Boba's backstory was inserted into the Prequels because of fan feedback. George doesn't seem to be a guy that cares about fan feedback at all.

    Yup lol.

I think he saw a chance to fix a mess up by treating Boba like he did and it just made it worse.

I'm glad I only saw Leia in that shot, seeing the legend Admiral Ackabar's demise was a big loss.

I agree 100%. I liked Admiral Ackbar, and they should not have killed him like that...
