Perhaps one of Dave Filoni's greatest writing assets is his ability to fill his stories with enough mysteries to keep the audience engaged, but is smart enough to be answering some of the questions along the way so that it doesn't all seem like a black box that will never be fully open. Continuing with that tradition, the first two episodes of Ahsoka left a lot of unanswered questions but also solved some of the marketing's biggest intrigues.

The show already carries a lot of baggage as far as open questions are concerned, given how its animated predecessor (I have some arguments against this description but the truth is that this is the most accurate one I can come up with in just a handful of words) wrapped up its final season: with the mother of all cliffhangers. But the show's marketing already told us that things in Ahsoka wouldn't exactly pick up where Star Wars: Rebels left off. It's been years, and plenty of things have happened since then -- most notably, Sabine trained for a while as Ahsoka's padawan.

Is Sabine Force-Sensitive in Ahsoka?

In the first episode of Ahsoka we already get to see that Sabine can hold her own with a lightsaber, though that shouldn't exactly come as a surprise for those who watched her arc in season 3 of Rebels and witnessed Kanan train her to use the Darksaber. But as far as my memory goes, this is one of the biggest examples we've seen of a non-Force user wielding a lightsaber in battle. Finn in The Force Awakens comes to mind, of course, but we know from The Rise of Skywalker('s promotional tour) that he is actually Force-sensitive. So, what about Sabine?

This is actually a question that goes much deeper than Sabine herself and delves into the pure mythology of Star Wars, which Dave Filoni desperately wants to explore with the show (sign me up!). What does it even mean to be Force-sensitive? The very definition of the Force, given by Obi-Wan in A New Hope, describes it as an energy field that surrounds everyone and binds the galaxy together. Luke added to this in The Last Jedi, saying it's an equilibrium between life and death, warmth and cold, peace and violence. It's inside of Rey because it's inside of everyone and it ties everyone together; it's the realization of the 'invisible thread' Chinese proverb. George Lucas even said it himself: 'People have a tendency to confuse it -- everybody has the Force. Everybody.'

Being Force-sensitive just means you have the ability to manipulate the Force; attract or repulse objects, make big jumps, and even manipulate someone's mind. Some people have a deeper connection with this field (Yoda), while others just go through life without ever feeling its existence (Han Solo). This is really no different from doing sports: in principle, everyone can do it, not everyone can excel at it. Some people go to the Olympics, some have to train a lot to be competitive in their local leagues.

From the dialogue we got in Part Two between Huyang and Sabine, it seems like Ahsoka tried to train Sabine in the ability to manipulate the Force, but Sabine proved to be a tougher student than she expected. But now they are back together, and I assume they will pick up the training just where they left it off (see predictions below). So, to the question of 'Is Sabine Force-Sensitive', my answer would simply be: not yet. But we will probably see Sabine do some Force-wielding before the end of the first season of Ahsoka. Whether that is reaching out to some purrgils or Force-attracting a lightsaber, I don't know yet.

Ahsoka Part Three Predictions

Hera Syndulla (and company?)

Coming out of the first two episodes of Ahsoka, I think I can see clearly where some of the storylines are headed next, but my vision is very clouded on a few others. The easiest one to predict is that Hera, given what she saw in Part Two, will be talking to Mon Mothma and the New Republic senators as we saw in the trailers, begging for help. She has now seen enough to think that there could be another war incoming, and though she didn't believe Ahsoka at first, it's clear to her that Thrawn's return is all but inevitable. And the New Republic must be ready to face its biggest threat yet.

The answer will obviously be 'No', but I think there's some room for speculation here. I don't think the Senate will give a definitive 'No', and they might actually send some help, or perhaps there will even be volunteers. Ever heard of the Rangers of the New Republic? You're certainly about to, because I wouldn't be surprised if Hera's hearing with the Senate resulted in Zeb coming back to the Ghost, and even bringing in some help. I think this is the biggest connection there will be to The Mandalorian season 3, though it may not all go down in Part Three. Peter Ramsey, who directed the episode where Zeb appeared in The Mandalorian, is directing Part Four, and that is probably not a coincidence. The other half of my Hera prediction is that we will finally see Jacen, though I don't think he will be aboard the Ghost for long.

Ahsoka and Baylan Skoll

Another easy one is that Ahsoka and Baylan will fight. We already know from the end of Part Two that she's headed to Seatos, and we've seen in the trailers that she's fighting with Baylan under the map-dome. But Baylan bringing up Anakin's name is no coincidence, and I believe we will learn a lot about him in this next episode. This will also be a key part of Ahsoka's journey, as it will be the first time Anakin makes an actual impact on the series. I don't think he's showing up here (I think that will happen in Part Five), but besides a quick mention of Anakin in Part One, we haven't really seen much of Ahsoka's greatest scar. And since we pretty much know he's coming later on, you must introduce their relationship properly to make the narrative feel compelling.

Sabine Wren and Shin Hati

As far as Sabine goes, I firmly believe the episode will open with a training sequence between her and Ahsoka aboard the ship, as they're on their way to Seatos. We've already seen glimpses of this in the promos, and it just makes sense in terms of story structure. I thought for a long time that we'd be getting flashbacks between their time training and the main timeline of the show, but I no longer think so, at least not extended ones. But Sabine has a pretty big fight ahead against Shin Hati, as we also saw from the trailers -- in fact, the woods setting seems to match the one on Seatos, so I think that is happening next as well. I'm not sure this makes a lot of sense to happen now, as it seems to close to these two's last encounter, but I trust they will make the best out of it.

Morgan Elsbeth

Things start to get a lot more interesting with Morgan Elsbeth. Now that the Eye of Sion is near completion, it's only a matter of time before she makes the jump to the other galaxy. On the one hand, I think it's too early for this to happen, and the fact that she specifically says it's not done yet might mean that we have another episode to go before the ship is functional. Perhaps Sabine vs. Shin 2.0 will not happen until Part Four, and in Part Three Sabine will actually be trying to sabotage the ship.

I'm not so certain about this (let me know what you think in the comments!), but I'll say the following: I think this next episode will see the introduction of Grand Admiral Thrawn. I do think that Morgan Elsbeth will travel to the distant galaxy and find the Chiss leader there. And I think the final shot of the episode will be this:

[IMG] Thrawn in Lucasfilm’s Ahsoka, exclusively on Disney+. ©2023 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All Rights Reserved.

It definitely seems like a lot for an episode that is rumored to be barely 30 minutes long, and likely some of it will actually be from Part Four (or not even happen at all). But I do think that in the long run, introducing Grand Admiral Thrawn already makes sense. But I also want to know what you think!

Drop your predictions in the comments below, and check back either on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning for our spoiler discussion of Ahsoka Part Three, to discover that I got all of it wrong! In the meantime, you can check out my thoughts on the first two episodes here.
