One of the most beloved characters from the first season of Andor was Andy Serkis' Kino Loy. The character's fate was left open-ended in Chapter 10, when he revealed that he wouldn't be able to leave the Narkina 5 prison so easily, as he couldn't swim. After months of rumors about Serkis' potential return in the second season, Lucasfilm has seemingly confirmed it is happening.

In a press release filling in all the details revealed over the weekend in London, Lucasfilm included Serkis' name among the cast of the second and final season. Now, the sentence is quite clear and certainly seems to confirm that the actor is a part of the new episodes, but we also want to include the possibility that it may be a slip-up on Lucasfilm's part, maybe copy-pasted from a season 1 cast list. In fact, the actors' list seems to have been translated directly from another press release highlighting the Andor season 2 section from Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase panel. Here is what it says specifically:

Kino Loy's impact was felt throughout the entire convention in London, as (at least four or five times a day) a group of Narkina 5 prisoner cosplayers would start chanting 'One Way Out' throughout the convention halls. They were also a part of the Andor season 1 panel, as during the warm-up, host DJ Elliot would yell 'On Program' and they would all stand up, hands behind their head, and immediately start running around. Diego Luna had a great time with them as well.

Once again, while this was on an official Lucasfilm document that must have been approved by several people, we are still being slightly cautious about Serkis' involvement in the new season. Multiple people claim to have spotted him on set or near it, but the fact that his name wasn't brought up over the weekend makes us a little dubious that this is real. At the same time, Tony Gilroy was especially coy about confirming he's dead during the press rounds for season 1, so maybe this is one of those 'where there's smoke, there is fire' situations.

We have reached out to Lucasfilm for comment, but as of the publication of this article, we haven't received any. Andor season 2 is currently in production in the UK, and is targeting an August 2024 release date.

Ugh. He obviously drowned, heroically, if he even survived the jump into the water. Why can't people stay dead in Star Wars? There was a valuable lesson to be learned about taking swimming lessons. This would have given Cassian the motivation to fight for a cause where swimming lessons are free and mandatory across the whole galaxy. Even on Tatooine. It was clearly all set up but the marketing and merchandise guys surely stepped in and made Gilroy bring Kino back. Wasted opportunity.

    ;)

Firstly, I am very skeptical of this whole thing. It's possible, if not likely, Serkis was listed because of his presence at SWC. I think everyone was surprised by the Narkina 5 cosplay phenomenon, and as a result, Kino Loy became the defacto hero for the Andor gang.

Even if he appears in S2, it doesn't necessarily mean that Kino survived. He had a major impact on Cassian, and could be in a flashback. On the other hand, if he did survive and does appear in S2, I have full faith that Gilroy & Co. will absolutely make it work and it will serve the story. Fan service and pandering are not part of his agenda.
