You can't go wrong with Age of Empires. AoE II and Mythology are the games that got me into strategy games 15 years ago, and they still hold up, with the HD Editions on Steam offering a lot of content including new expansions (though the Mythology expansion is crap), lot of workshop mods, and a healthy mp community if that's your thing.

I'm also big into Total War and Paradox games, but I don't know if that kind of thing (especially the latter) would appeal to you. My game of choice is Europa Universalis IV (2600+ hours and counting!) and it takes a lot of time, diligence, and motivation to figure out.

In addition to the games already mentioned here: Hearts of Iron, Steel Division: Normandy 1944, Wargame: Red Dragon, and Stellaris are all good choices.

If you can find a copy for a reasonable price, the Battle for Middle Earth games were insanely good fun.

Yeah I'm not into Hearts of Iron (yet) but I do love me some Stellaris and Crusader Kings II to go with EU4! I have Victoria II in my library but even after all this time I'm still a bit too intimidated to start it up.

The Battle for Middle-earth games are great and I still start them up sometimes. A pity they never got a digital version.

The bad thing is that now that the LotR license has long since expired for EA, physical copies were discontinued with 0 chances of there ever being any digital releases unless some kind of deal is struck in the future.

    I know. It sucks.:(

However I can recommend Third Age: Total War in its place. A total conversion mod for Medieval II, it is absolutely magnificent. It's probably my favorite game of all time, up there with EUIV. The MOS and Divide & Conquer submods make it even better.

There's an awesome mod for Empire at War: FC called "Thrawn's Revenge". Everyone, especially Legends fans, should check it out.

Hey, I just look up the mod. Looks real fun! Is there a basic mod where I can play it like Empire at War where I just build up my army to fight the enemy?
