I'd say Curtis Saxton (in the link you provided) is quite right (though IMO not always and I told him so back in our discussion group in the early 2000's), there is not enough space to accomodate these barges or dropships on a regular Devastator or Avenger type Star Destroyer.

However, with the 11 mile long Executor that's a completely different story and revisiting the ESB dialogue I noticed a particular detail:

VADER Make ready to land out troops beyond
the energy shield and deploy the
fleet so that nothing gets off that
system. You are in command now,
    Admiral Piett.

So he's not telling Piett to land the Executor or enter the atmosphere but to "land out troops" which IMHO suggests the use of dropships and barges but only from Executor (He did not say "have the fleet land out troops").

The second part of the order is to deploy the regular Star Destroyers to form a blockade. I'd say that the captains of the other Star Destroyers couldn't efficiently deploy troops and form the blockade, so their priority was to see to it that no ships escaped, and as we learn later (in the deleted scene) seventeen Rebel ships had been destroyed while trying to escape.

If any forum members are interested, Popular Mechanics did a online article last week that trashed the whole Star Wars armored vehicles, troop deployment systems.
    Mostly the tech weenies railed against the AT-ATs (at-at) & smaller AT-STs; (at-st) .
I disagree with most of their points but it does serve some debate.
I've posted a few months ago how the huge AT-ATs could be higher up from any IED blasts or mines. They could also see further out and have a wider view of the battle field(path). The huge weight and pounding could also detonate any IEDs or bombs way before the AT-AT gets close.
They weapons are also intimidating & could scare the skat out of primitive tribes or races: (ewok) (tusken) (jawa) etc.
