There is no doubt that the sword-play in the prequels is impressive, yet they come under fire for lack of emotion or realism (unlike the gritty duels between Luke and Vader in Episodes 5 & 6).

Anyhow, what is your favourite fight in the prequels, and why? If you hate them all, feel free to explain/describe your lack of satisfaction.

I think the fight between Obi wan and Anakin is the best, So much emotion and energy. Every little detail in that fight is awesome and so personal. Like when Anakin is choking Obi wan. The lava bursts, the complex overloading into the lava, even the speech Obi gives as the fight is over. The fight was well planed and choreographed and it shows

Windu vs Palpatine. What started as 4 vs 1 quickly became 1 vs 1. The great clash between probably best living Jedi fencer vs Sidious himself. And the conclusion of fight which spawn endless debate, did Windu win, or did outcome of the fight was part of Sidious plan to finally turn Anakin to the Dark Side?

    Maul vs. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon.
It featured a nice balance of swirling sabers and kinetic energy while also making sure that you could not only follow the action but also the strategy. (The little head fake trade off to confuse Maul is a personal favorite of mine)

Of all the battles it also seems to find interesting ways to include force powers (Maul force throwing debris to open the door without looking always struck me as particularly cool)

Combine that with some nice tension building at the ray shields, drama with Qui-Gon's death, and then the best 30 seconds of lightsaber action in the trilogy in the final confrontation between Maul and Kenobi, it wins my vote.

Yoda vs Sidious, I didn't see that coming because I was anticipating Anakin vs Obi-Wan, which I heard Lucas talk about somewhere before the prequels were planned. It also explained why Yoda didn't have a lightsaber on Dagobah.

My favorite is the second fight between Anakin and Kenobi vs Dooku. The main reason is that it went the whole fight without cutting to something else. Like the Maul fight kept cutting to gungans and starships. ROTS ending was two great duels going on at the same time. But with this fight you saw the beginning middle and end of the fight without feeling you missed anything.

The major problem (besides Ep. I) I have with the prequels is how they treat lightsabers. They forgot those are energy weapons which have no mass in the blades for fancy useless twirling. The visual language of IV, V, VI established the saber as a dangerous weapon not to be used lightly.

I think that goes without saying it's the most well choreographed fight in the PT. It's fast, gritty, and well paced... except for the stupid end.

I'm gonna have to say Obi vs Grevious. That fight is all over the place, in a messy, good way. (Though Grevious here wasn't half the Grevious we saw in gennedy tartakovsky's Clone Wars series :()

I wasn't a huge fan of Grevious. The concept was interesting. I think they could have done a lot more with the "ghost in the machine" story if they cared to flesh out the character more and give him a menacing appearance. Instead his voice was silly and he looked like a separatist droid reject...

Yeah that's one of the biggest problems with the PT, none of the villains are fleshed out. Maul, Grevious, Dooku, we barely know anything about them. You could argue that makes them more mysteriously menacing, but it can also be confusing.

Of all the villains I thought Maul was the best! Lucas should have kept him for the entire trilogy.
Anyone would agree he was visually striking, kind of a space samurai or a ninja and his silent presence felt haunting.

My friend also thinks Maul would have had double the effect on the audience if Lucas didn't show his weapon in the trailers.

Maul - Kenobi - Qui-Gon. The most visually stunning and originally choreographed duel of the PT, and it doesn't go on forever, which proves once again that less is more.

I hope hope hope that the sequel trilogy emulates the OT rather the the PT.

Anakin vs Kenobi. Blue on blue. That was a nice change. I'm so so glad that Palpatine didn't conveniantly have a red saber ready for Vader. (like he conveniantly had a Darth Vader costume ready). I loved seeing the two blue sabers in that fight. It made it seem less like good vs evil, and more like brother vs brother. I kept finding myself hoping Anakin would come to his senses! Even though I knew it was his destiny to become Vader. It was the most emotional fight in the saga next only maybe to Luke vs Vader in Jedi.

Maul vs Obi-wan and Jinn was awesome also.

I thought this fight was pretty decent, but way too long. The extravagant saber flailing and twirling didn't resonate well visually as well. The exchange after Obi chops off his legs was ON THE MONEY!!!

I think everyone is right about all the light saber fights, but all of you are forgetting the one battle that made me smile from ear to ear. Yoda vs. Dooku. We as an audience were finally able to witness Yoda duel and the way he flipped and somersaulted all over the place was awesome. I don't know how Dooku was able to block every strike, they were coming from all angles and sides. The best fight in the entire six movies in my opinion, although the battle between Anakin and Obi Wan is a close second.

I lean toward the Anakin/Obi-Wan fight like many... however though I thought it was completely awesome in its entirety originally, I now feel it's a bit too long. Specifically I'm not a huge fan of the part where they're climbing all over the machines and stuff over the lava, at least not to the extent they show it. Leading up to it, with all the lava flying and sparks everywhere, as well as the end on the edge of the "river" is awesome... just the parts with them climbing up and down the machinery seems a tad too much. Other than that, I love it.

Going simpler, I'll bring up Luke/Vader from ESB. It was just very dark, well thought out, and had an excellent interim. One of my favorite parts of it (aside from when Luke's hand is severed) is when Luke is in a corridor searching for Vader, when suddenly Vader emerges with a gigantic swipe of his lightsaber in front of Luke, going full force on him.
