BREAKING NEWS: Lucasfilm has announced a new theatrical feature film titled The Mandalorian & Grogu coming from director Jon Favreau. It will go into production this year. In addition, StarWars.com has confirmed that Ahsoka season 2 is in the works.

    Favreau said in a statement:

    Kathleen Kennedy added:

Kennedy, Favreau, and Dave Filoni are executive producers. No writer has been announced, but it seems logical to assume Favreau will be taking credit too. Plot details are unknown.

Pedro Pascal furthered the discussion on his Instagram page, simply adding to his story Ryan Church's concept art along with the 'Hey Mando!' theme from Ludwig Göransson, the very first piece of music used in the series. This likely confirms Pascal's involvement, quelling any fears he might be leaving the role.

    <h2>Breaking Down The Mandalorian &amp; Grogu </h2>

No release date has been announced, but Lucasfilm is saying that it will be the first feature film out of the gate, ahead of the upcoming Daisy Ridley-led movie from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which was at one point confirmed to be the first one of this new wave of Star Wars movies.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean that the Obaid-Chinoy film has been delayed. With The Mandalorian &amp; Grogu going into production this year, they could very well make a late 2025 release date. Avatar 3 is slated for December 2025, though.

We heard rumors late last year about The Mandalorian season 4 possibly being retooled as a movie, and that it was part of the reason why they didn't get it up and running immediately after the break. While Lucasfilm hasn't confirmed that The Mandalorian &amp; Grogu is indeed a big-screen version of season 4, the fact that they are going into production this year seems to suggest that. However, Deadline is reporting that 'At present, a fourth season... is also in development' in addition to the movie, though their language use makes it sound like that is subject to change.

The reason behind the decision remains under wraps. We speculated late last year that this might be a way to get Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck's hands dirty with film production as they get ready to take on a larger role at the company. This might also not be the only film that goes in front of the cameras in 2024, as the Daisy Ridley-fronted film should be moving forward independently of The Mandalorian &amp; Grogu.

    <h2>Ahsoka Season 2 Officially in the Works</h2>

We kind of suspected this was coming, but it's still nice to get some confirmation from Lucasfilm from time to time. Coincidentally, it came out just a few days after a new interview with Rosario Dawson aired in which the actress said Lucasfilm was waiting for the New Year to make a final decision on whether to move forward with a second season. With Ahsoka executive producer Carrie Beck and showrunner Dave Filoni promoted to new positions in light of the success of the series, it seemed like a no-brainer that they'd be doing more.

At the same time, the new season will inevitably delay production on the Dave Filoni-directed film, which is set to culminate the stories from all of the New Republic-era shows. James Mangold is also directing a film set 25,000 years in the past.

Stay tuned as this story continues to develop.

Hopefully it's a real film with an actual story and not just a two hour episode of nothingness.

The ending of season 3 actually works quite well as a new start for better and more intriguing adventures featuring Mando and Grogu.

But please, have Pedro Pascal in the suit this time.

With Disney having some issues with Marvel at the box office this seems like smart business. A Mando film shouldn't cost too much more than a normal season, it shouldn't take that long to make, there's already a rabid audience for it, and season 3 ended at a good spot to tell a new story. This also helps if the other projects run into problems. They can just fall back to the Feloni film set in the same time period. They really need to get that Rey film right, so take as much time they need.

Why? My assumption is that Wayne is probably better in the suit since he's in it a lot more than Pedro.

    Very cool news, this :)

I wonder what the story will be? That pair of characters could take on a wide variety of plots and problems, and it'll be interesting to see how LFL ends up using Din & Grogu in a movie. I mean, I presume it is set post The Mandalorian season 3, and the slate is pretty blank by that point.

    I'm psyched! :D

    Release schedule predicitons:
--The Mandalorian & Grogu, May 2026
--Rey's New Jedi Order, December 2026
--Filoni's MandoVerse conclusion film, Decempber 2027

I was more talking about seeing Pedro's face. I mean what's the point of having a great actor if you don't see him act?
But this time he definitely will be a bigger part of Mando. A blockbuster movie needs well known actors for marketing reasons.

I love me some Mando and Grogu content, but I am afraid that this is just a reworked season four. The major problem remains the same as with Dave's Mandoverse movie. Disney+ audience is limited, especially internationally. Granted, Mando + Grogu are much more cinematic. Grogu appeared in a minute of the first episode and the world was under his feet. So, Mando & son don't require previous knowledge like Ahsoka for example. They can basically jump from the last frame of season 3. But, they have to have a story which can be not just meaningful enough for the cinemas, but also someone's first Star Wars - an entry point into franchise.

I will believe in this or any other Star Wars movie when the shooting begins and even then I'll wait for the first trailer.

Plus, how can you even tell? That's the beauty of the mask.

Is this the Dave Filoni film announced at star wars celebration or is this a new film from the script of Mandalorian season 4?

I agree with your first 2 comments.

Honestly I dont care who is in the suit and while I hope there is the one of two seasons with Pedro, I much prefer masked Mando.

The article mentions that this is a Favreau movie, as one would expect for a Mando project, so not the same as Filoni's film.

It was rumored a while back that LFL was considering turning the Mando S4 scripts into a movie, but that has not been confirmed here. It could be the case, but we don't really know.

I'm curious why they felt Mando had to be a movie at all? You don't get Pedro Pascal to be covered by helmet for most of the season. So, maybe we get to see his face with the mask off for most it? That would be the only reason to be a movie. I hope something big happens to justify the bigger budget and what not.

Dave Filoni is now the creative BOSS... NUFF SAID. :D

More Star Wars film announcements... won't take it seriously until an official trailer is released.

Money is the biggest reason. It's the most popular streaming series from 2023. A new story can bring in general audience who doesn't need the back story, but are curious about the Grogu phenomenon. Even better, if the film is good and gets more people into the series on Disney+.

Din is actually less expressive when he takes the mask off. Pascal made it quite clear that he's almost lost without it. Barely able to speak. The armourer conceded that alliance with the clans which do not walk the way was necessary to restore Mandalore. But nothing has changed for those who follow the creed zealously, like Din. There would need to be a huge change in Din's attitude towards the creed before we see much hatless Pedro.

I just hope we're not getting a Mando movie instead of Season 4, as I think there's a lot of potential for the latter. Although I'll still be going to see the movie regardless.

I am definitely pumped for Ahsoka Season 2. :D

Some are questioning why this is being made, the possible box office and it being accessible to new fans and all that. I get it and not saying anyone is wrong for it but just have to say that I for one don't care about any of that and especially don't care about the casual fans!

The Mandalorian happens to be my favorite star wars show and Din is one of my favorite star wars characters. I've read S4 is happening and am glad but a theatrical film is amazing news and I'll definitely be there on day 1!

I am curious about the story but mainly want to see Din Djarin kick ass on the big screen and of course yes Grogu cuteness!

I bet this will be a great movie, and I am super excited. But the name “The Mandalorian and Grogu” seems a bit odd to me.

Yes, I agree about the title, maybe its the temporary title for now, but I believe they want to attract that Grogu audience, I recently talked to a co-worker who said she got bored of the Mandalorian and stopped watching the series maybe this title will peak her interest.

The title, if indeed it ends up being The Mandalorian and Grogu, is a bit dorky, but from a marketing perspective it works very well, indeed. Cassual fans who like the show and adore Grogu will instantly know that this is a film they need to watch.

That said, I hope LFL at least gives it a cool secondary title, something like:
The Mandalorian and Grogu and the Adventure of the Cursed City, or whatever. Kinda like Indiana Jones and lots more.
