Ironically, the 2 movies that are my favorites since 1999 are R1 and Solo so yes it can survive without the Skywalker name. For me, the Saga movies don’t work cause they try too hard to tie to the Skywalker arc. R1 and Solo have the freedom to be their own story that doesn’t step on the Skywalker name (which is their goal). In saying that, I don’t know how interested I’ll be for a movie that is from another era. R1 and Solo work for me cause they are their own story yet still tie into the OT in a secondary story way.

    So wait...

You're telling me that a Skywalker/Solo kid that aspires to be as powerful and rule like his grandfather Darth Vader ISN'T the lead male in this Star Wars saga trilogy???

That's really weird that I've had that wrong this entire time...or not.:rolleyes:

I think it "continued without the Skywalker name" the moment Rebels premiered.

no it cannot...at least not with the classic "Star wars" title. the brand and name is associated with skywalker, solo, etc. what is the argument to still call it the Wars when it has completely moved on to be unrecognizable?

Eventually over time, time will make the most of us and the future generations might not even know about the skywalkers. However, there is literaly no star wars without the skywalkers...it is like making "Harry Potter and the..." movies with no Harry, Ron, and Hermione. They can make more star wars movies, but they cannot call it episodic with no Skywalkers.

I feel like we could definitely have a movie or even series without the Skywalker's. Look at the TV shows? The Old Republic? Etc. Sure they have cameos, but nothing huge. I feel like we could very well have different stories, just either before or after the events in the movies. I feel like a futuristic stye would be fun. A whole new take would be refreshing. Get away from the concept of the Jedi Order, Sith, etc. The only real issue would be you'd need to move to a new Galaxy since these events were Galaxy wide.

I think SW needs to move beyond the Skywalkers moving forward, because we have a whole galaxy to work with. I remember in the prequel era it was getting ridiculous how everyone was related to everyone else, such as C3PO being built by Anakin, Boba being a stormtrooper, and Yoda fighting on Kashykk alongside Chewbacca. It was getting to the point where one person commented that Lando was on the same softball team with Luke (!)

One of the great things about the ANH was that everything was part of a bigger world. Some of my favorite scenes in the OT was just the background aliens in Mos Eisley, the bounty hunters in ESB, and Jabba's palace. The SW galaxy should feel big.

Yes, but only for one more trilogy.
First off, the SW saga is the story of the Skywalkers. So unless they plan to turn it into something else entirely, each movie needs to feature a Skywalker as a main character. If the Skywalkers disappear from the story, SW as we know it is over. And yes, I know we have media that's entirely "devoid" of Skywalkers, but most of us don't care about it. We don't watch it, don't read it, it just doesn't matter. The sequel trilogy did it right, it introduced a new powerful character WITHOUT shifting the story from the Skywalkers. But the problem is...the story can only go on for so long if that name is forgotten, even if a main character is always a blood Skywalker. If Kylo doesn't take Skywalker as his surname, the next few generations will be Solos. And if every once in a while the bloodline continues through a woman who doesn't have her father's name or takes on her husband's...soon enough they'll all forget they're Skywalkers. They'll forget their history, the role they played in shaping the galaxy, and so will the audience. The Skywalker name holds real weight, so it HAS TO stay. Imagine one of Kylo's decendants 300 years in the future, someone who doesn't even have the Solo surname. Who will Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker and Ben Solo be to him (or her)? Legends, fairy tales. Given how records get destroyed and how fast everything changes in SW, chances are he won't even have real proof that those people even existed. And how sad would THAT be? One top of that...Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it... So when Kylo figures out that he won't die anytime soon he needs to do something about it. This family has to learn that their name matters, and make sure that every single member has it.

I agree with you. I would much rather they drop the Star Wars moniker if they are going to tell completely new stories. It would help brand and market things more efficiently. I can see it now.

I've been saying this for awhile. But I think, if they drop the "Star Wars" title, they need to replace it with something more familiar than "Old Republic." I mean, that gets us fans excited, but imagine if you'd never heard of it before. It doesn't mean anything Star Wars-related. I would suggest something like "Tales of the Jedi."

I was just using the first thing that popped in my head. I do think The Old Republic would be a good name because the point is it should be unfamiliar. The films (not saying a Old Republic movie specifically) hopefully will not use all the same iconography as the previous movies but then you throw in a lightsaber or two into the marketing to let people know hey this is Star Wars but also something different.

Rogue One and the Rebels animated series only have brief cameos by Skywalker family members. I don't think there will be any Skywalkers featured in the Mandalorian or the Cassian Andor series either. Those stories aren't about them. It's a huge galaxy and lots of tales to be told. I think Star Wars not only can, but should tell stories apart from the Skywalkers. I am sure eventually there will be X, XI, XII and the Skywalker saga will inevitably continue, but between now and then there are a lot of other stories that could be told. There's room enough in this galaxy for everything. I can't wait to see what Rian Johnson's trilogy or those Game of Thrones producers have in store.

I don't think they would ever use a name that isn't recognizably part of Star Wars. They might m lose a lot of casual fans and merchandise opportunities. I'm sure you could measure the loss in dollars. Words like "Force" or "Jedi" would need to be part of the title for brand unity.
