This week marked the one-year anniversary of The Ankler first reporting that HBO's Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof was developing a Star Wars film. Since then, the project has been cooking up behind the scenes and gained much more momentum than any other recent Star Wars project destined for the big screen, but there's one thing that's been missing. Nobody attached to it has ever said a word about it. Well, now we can finally put that behind us.

Speaking at the South By Southwest (SXSW) film festival, Lindelof confirmed that he's been writing a Star Wars movie, when promoting his latest project, the Peacock series Mrs. Davis. When asked by /Film, Lindelof didn't give a lot of details about the project, but he did share some of his hesitations about taking on such a big IP. Our biggest takeaway, however, is that he's finally confirmed it's real. He said:

Of course, we've been burned in the past (many times) by directors and writers confirming they are working on a Star Wars movie... only for that project to be put aside within a few months. As we discussed in the most recent SWNN Live, though, this time it feels different. From all the information we've been able to gather, it looks like Lindelof's film is in a very good place, with Lucasfilm probably preparing it to be the first in a series of films that will explore the galaxy in a post-Rise of Skywalker era. The script is probably done at this point, and the lead male actor has been attached to it from the very beginning; the studio could be casting some of the other leads as of this moment.

We are finally going to get some details about this during the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase panel that takes place on Friday 7 at Star Wars Celebration; that much the trades and common sense are telling us. This will likely include the announcement of Lindelof as the executive producer and co-writer (along with Justin Britt-Gibson) of the next Star Wars movie, as well as its title, 2025 release date, and some of the other talent attached to it in front of and behind the camera, including Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as a director.

Stay tuned, because the next few months are looking like a great time to be a Star Wars fan, with the franchise gearing up for its return to the big screen in December 2025.
