In the movies it seems that the Emperor always had a plan and he had a vision of how future events would unfold. He would have also been aware that his apprentice (Vader) would eventually want to kill him to seek greater power. The Emperor was a great strategist so he must have had a backup plan if he died. Assuming that the Emperor died in Episode VI, would his backup plan be revealed in Episode VII? If so, what sort of backup plan would make for a great story?

In the comics he had a cloned body for himself and when he fell down the hole on the Death Star 2 at the end of Return of the Jedi he transfered himself into the clone.

A guy like Palpatine probably thought he was going to live for centuries and didn't have a plan. Or maybe he thought early on that Vader could succeed him, before it became apparent that Vader was more of a henchman and better suited to keep the job he had.

The Sith are selfish and look inwards. The only future he looked to was his own, not a future of the galaxy he wasn't part of.

I think we can agree that JJ and company would not follow this path. So what would be an alternative to cloning if someone were seeking to "cheat death"?

Yeah I've heard that Palpatine will be in the movie but not as recognize him implying his spirit had entered a new "host" of sorts.

He was just going to use the dark side of the force to keep his body alive.

I worry that having Palpatine survive would kill the whole “pride before the fall” theme they have going throughout the saga. In the PT, the Jedi are arrogant to the point where they miss a galaxy endangering threat right under their nose. And this is mirrored in the OT with the empire. Just like the Old Jedi Order before him, Palpatine became arrogant to a point where he could not see the threat of both the rebellion and the familial bond of his second in command for his son. That blinding arrogance killed him and reasserted the lesson of the PT that being too confident in one’s self to the point of not allowing for any possible weakness or criticism is a flaw that can be exploited.

Having the emperor be aware of his oncoming demise would diminish that too much for me.

This right here. Also another good reason to NOT bring him back.

I believe he would have had a plan in the event that something went wrong. As the PT and OT showed, he was always looking for a more powerful apprentice. Which leads me to believe he could have had another option besides Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Whether TPTB makes this happen for the ST, or they have another plan altogether, is yet to be seen. But I do believe its reasonanble to think that Darth Sidious had another egg(apprentice) in another basket somewhere.

If only he had the foresight and vision to board up that huge hole that inevitably lead to the death star being blown up.. some people eh!

I don't think the Emperor would of had a back-up plan. While he is a totes nefarious genius (as shown by the Original Trilogy), and his evil plan to take over the Galactic Empire almost succeeded, the end result of everything he does was the secure position as an all-powerful emperor. One of the parts of his plan was dissolving the Imperial senate, so that it could never oppose or replace him, which also means it can't choose a new leader in the event of his death. The Emperor didn't really care about the politics of the Galactic Empire - he just cared that he was in charge of it.

I think Palpatine at least this time, was fully confident in his visions that he would not fail. He was sure Luke would turn to the darkside or die at his hands. He was sure his trap had worked and the rebel alliance would be destroyed at Endor. Palps figured he would outlive Vader, find a way to extend his own life until he became immortal, and rule the galaxy forever. How close did he come?

The Empire has a Council. The Moffs and regional governor types over see it. There's a whole hierarchy. By the time you get to the original trilogy era, the Emperor has retreated from public life. Darth Vader is a fool that cares about the Empire and thinks it can actually bring order, Sheeve Palpatine doesn't care about people or order. He just wants to rule it. So the point is, when Darth Vader and Darth Sidious die, there's a clear succession of order to maintain the Empire beyond their deaths. I don't think it was designed that way by Palpatine but it is what it is. The question we have in the ensuing 35 years after their deaths is did anyone proclaim themselves Emperor again?

I really think that the premise of EP7 should be that Plaguise, Palps, Vader and all other Siths before them are 100% dead and Luke is not evil. Not to say that Luke won't be tempted by the dark side again or even defeated in some way. There are so many ways around this that can make for a great story with a twist or two....so I'm nearly 100% confident that we'll see something original. Whether there is a new Sith(s) or a completely new threat, either way is fine with me. My money is on the latter.

Yoda has a first name too. It's never used but was in a few scripts & drafts of TESB.
It's Bir or Shir or something. I'll look it up. :)

I too heard Palpatine created a few clones but burned thru them all in the Star Wars novels.
He was trying to procure a Dark Side version of what Jedi Masters like Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon & Yoda has.

The thrust of Return of the Jedi was that the Emperor was supremely confident and arrogant, caught up in his own hype. He was sure his visions led to the destruction of the Rebellion and that Luke was to become the apprentice to usurp and replace Vader. He could not conceive of any failure, such was his pride. If he'd had any doubts about his massively expensive Death Star II plot, he'd never have ventured from Coruscant and seated himself in the thick of the battle.

"Sheeve." I like it. Sounds like "shiv" or what a prisoner would fashion for a crude knife to literally "back-stab."

Now, as to Palps foresight -- yes he could foresee quite alot it seems as his plans unfolded as he had foreseen. However, he didn't see everything. Seeing everything is for Gods. Palps failed to see Anakin and Padme fighting off the Trade Federation in Episode I and he failed to see Vader turn on him in Episode VI. BUT just because he didn't foresee these specific events does not nullify him having a plan. I think he did. I just hope it's not the "clone plot" recycled from a comic book.
