Firstly, they're Dutch in origin. They were originally made from a round ball of baked dough fried in oil which originally had spicy nuts, cinnamon or hazlenuts in the very centre for flavouring. Which is why it's called a doughnut. (not 'Donut', which is just very bad and lazy colonial spelling)

Doughnuts are not ring shaped and have no hole, except from where the jam is injected.

These are actually called Ring Doughnuts as they're ring shaped and have a hole.

'Doughnut' is also a decades old English light-hearted slang insult word for a silly, clumsy or stupid person. Usage: "You doughnut!"
This insult variant of the word implies that the recipient has a hollow head, which instead contains a thick fruit jam instead of a functioning brain.
An example provided by Gordon Ramsay:

of all the things to block from country to country, never would have imagined it would be a donut. Silly Al Gore and his Internet Rules...

I saved and uploaded the image instead, re-load and see if that works?

    Um, weren't doughnuts already vegan?
I don't seem to remember having one with pork, lamb, chicken, fish or beef sticking out of one.

    Maybe the frying oil/fat? Hmm.

    Was this thread renamed?

The other day @NinjaRen and I had an Oreo Donut (pictures are about to follow) It didn't taste good by any means, as if the donut was already at least a week old. The dough was hard and dry. The consistency was like a biscuit, not like a fluffy donut. The cream was too little and not white but off white... The Oreo crumbs did not taste good and were crumbly and dusty.

Not sure this one was just old and because of that it tasted so awful, but we are not keen on trying another one anytime soon. Such a disappointment.

Actually I somewhat expected the general non vegan dough of a doughnut to be made with milk, butter and maybe eggs (and of course with flour sugar, yeast (or baking soda) and a bit of salt. but these are usually pretty vegan).

Imo think these should not called donuts, because they don't taste like the real thing. Like Tofurky for example - it tastes fine, but doesn't taste like Turkey, so it's not called Turkey.
