I have no problem that JJ copied ANH with the characters in a sense of giving us a taste of them but leaving alot to develop.

Episode 8 HAS to develop and flesh them out for it to give this Trilogy the same depth as the OT.

We have to learn about Rey's childhood we saw in that quick flashback. We have to learn more about Kylo Ren and why he turned and what his childhood relationship with Han/Leia was?

Yes but only in the barest ways. Luke will have a short conversation with Rey similar to Luke and Ben on Dagobah that will cover all the bases. Rest will just come out in quick interactions between Snoke, Kylo Ren, Rey etc

I doubt there is any more to Finn. Just his future development. Ditto with Poe. Same as how we learn nothing of Han in ESB and Jedi.

I agree that Rey and Kylo Ren will need some more backstory, but I think that (along with Kylo Ren probably) Snoke will need some more explanation as well. I think that most of that will come across during their respective training sequences so I'm confident that Rian can make it come across naturally.

I think nuances to Rey, Finn and Poe will be given in VIII. I think there's an obvious reason they got Abrams for the setup and Johnson for the development. They are going to play to their strong suits. Abrams has always been great with quickly setting up interesting and likable characters. But his weaknesses get exposed when he's asked to do anything more with them. Johnson seems to have a bit more of a critical eye when it comes to the depth of a character.

I imagine we'll have something akin to ESB in VIII where the arc for each character will be built around their own personal journey as opposed to a common threat plot. This will allow us to look deeper into the motivations and nuances of each character and how they interact with each other and others, allowing them to come back together against the common enemy in IX.

The test will be in how Johnson does that. I didn't mind the rehashed plot in VII, simply because I thought it was necessary to build familiarity with the audience while introducing the new characters. But I only accept that on the grounds that I believe Johnson will do something more fresh with the next installment while still using the same basic framework of ESB to develop the characters. Here's oping he can pull that off.

If you happen to have seen his Breaking Bad episodes (the one about the fly and "Ozymandias", the one where everything hits the fan), you'll know there is no one better suited to fleshing out characters than Rian Johnson. With the fly episode he took a show that had already been through 2 and a half seasons and somehow added a huge new layer of depth, relatability and pathos to the main character. Sort of like what Traitor did for the New Jedi Order series. I'm extremely confident that Rian can deliver what we're looking for with this characterization. My only worry would be Disney/LFL trying to reign in his more creative impulses too much, for fear of putting people off. Hopefully TFA has convinced them they can put whatever the heck story they want on the screen and people will some see it as long as the action is engaging. If they give Rian free reign we might be talking about a new "best Star Wars" in a year and a half.... :)

JB literally says that they go into his backstory in VIII.
