So, we all know that George Lucas pitched his ideas for the Sequel trilogy to Kathleen, JJ, etc. and they were mostly abandoned for a reboot esque episode 7. I'm really fine with the new characters and feel it's the only thing that hasn't doomed the sequel trilogy after such a safe and unoriginal script by JJ and Kasdan. That said, did Disney really have to rebel so much against what Lucas has created for us and go so far off the grid as to not even mention ANY of the planets that were respectably part of the classic map of the SW Universe or the EU? I'm all for introducing a couple new planets(Especially Ahch-To which is a hidden planet Luke was finally found on) but it just felt generic not using Coruscant..Still haven't seen Correlia which is weird(though we'll prob FINALLY see it in the solo, Solo movie)..Jakku is literally a more barren Tatooine. Maz was literally a female Yoda. EHHHHHH... What were those Rathtars? The name sounds SW like, but not very Starwarsy..haha Okay, I'm done trying to make my point which is that Disney's new 'canon' universe has sort of taken me out of Lucas's universe.. which sucks. :( Any thoughts or am I the A hole here?

I hear you. They really played it safe, the part where I found myself rolling my eyes was trenchrun 2.0. But consider the position they were in. People just saw the prequels and were upset it didn't feel like Star Wars, now you are getting one that does honor the tone and feel of the OT and you are still complaining?

It took me 2-3 viewings to really appreciate TFA for what it is. Characters, score, look, feel, the things that have been mentioned many times, all that works magnificently. I also believe that, if you take out Starkiller and make Jakku a, say forrest planet barely anyone complains about it being to similar to ANH.

Also, you are complaining that it's too unoriginal, but you are upset that they didn't use more old planets? With all due respect, that doesn't make much sense.

I don't come here often, but I always see people bashing Disney for really weird reasons, like not having space battles. Really? We've seen ONE of probably 100 movies that are to come. Again, I hear your complaints and I've had similar issues after seeing TFA the first time. But I'm willing to give Disney the benefit of the doubt. What exactly have they done so terribly wrong? In my eyes, they are doing about everything right so far by hiring extremely talented and passionate people (even though I'm not a fan of Trevorrow). Some people say they are turning it into a kids franchise - but the first spin-off we get is a freaking war movie. And we've heard people in the industry say that they've really let Rian Johnson do what he wants to do.

I personally think that more people are going to appreciate TFA for what it is - and fast-paced, really entertaining and heartfelt new introduction into the SW universe - when we see 8 and 9 and get more answers. I might come back and eat my own words if Rogue One turns out to be a desaster and 8 is a new ESB. But I don't think that will happen.

Well, it's all subjective of course. I grew up on both the originals and prequels and it all feels like star wars to me because it's all the universe GL built for us and originally wrote about. What I meant by using familiar planets is I have a few Star Wars encyclopedias (pre Disney buy out) that don't have any of the planets (hardly)mentioned in TFA. Not only that, but TFA didn't flesh out these new planets they made up to even feel like it was part of the Universe I grew up with AND on top of it, the new planets(aside from Och-to) are complete rehashes of previous George Lucas planets. Nothing new just a lot less detailed and alien feeling. At least the EU respected what was original and used some of the planets originally made on the maps.

I don't bash Disney for everything. What they've done with Marvel is amazing! That's their baby though. With Star Wars they disrespected Lucas's baby. I don't care how careful JJ and Kasdan were with episode 7 as far as the original trilogy lovers go. They literally stole everything Lucas began with and gave it a shiny paint job. What about kids down the road watching episodes 1 - 9 or 12. They're going to watch 1-6 and think it's all cohesive and a linear episodic saga. Then watch 7 and scratch their head wondering why it all feels far too familiar to be labeled as a sequel.. It's really bothersome and I left the theater very frustrated by it. I don't mind JJ with a lot of stuff because he gets movie magic, but he's more of a fan boy that wants to recreate his childhood on screen rather than be innovative. That's why he'll never be a George Lucas or Spielberg.

I have to say that I totally agree with you Klai Kenobi. For me it was really a bummer that we had to swallow ANH 2.0 rather than an original SW movie. To add insult to injury Disney trashed all the classic familiar aliens just to give us their versions which really made no sense whatsoever. Why not continue using the old aliens while adding their own new ones but to give us wierd copies just so they wouldn't use the ones Lucas created was just insulting.

Do we need more proof that Disney just wanted to stay away from the aliens created by Lucas? Why give us an Ithorian 2.0?

And not only that but everything in the movie as well. If it weren't for a change in names we could have sworn that TFA showed us Tatooine, Hoth, Yavin ect. I grew up with the OT and I loved the PT just as much and it indeed felt like I was in the same galaxy far far away but I left the theatre feeling odd after seeing TFA so you are not alone. Many fans call TFA a good movie and say it's better than the prequels yet I always wonder what do they base this upon when it's just a rehash of ANH. TESB is considered the best SW movie by a great majority of fans so does that mean that if episode 8 clones TESB, I can then say that it's better than ANH or ROTJ? How can you rate a movie that's just a copy of one that came before it and say it's better than this and that movie? For me that makes no sense and that's just prequel bashers trying to justify themselves.

That the prequels were perfect? No absolutely not as they had many flaws but at least they gave us a new story that greatly expanded the familiar world that Lucas created instead of just giving us a rehash and saying it was to make SW relevant again.
