Another really small thing that spoke volumes without words...when Han and Leia first meet, Han kind of shuffles his feet/flexes his knees while he stands talking to her. It's a little tic that communicates so much about the anxiety/awkwardness of this meeting with his estranged loved one.

i agree! in the book her excitement about the food is even more apparent. it's kind of heartbreaking to think she's probably never eaten this well in her life!

for a character who only had such a brief scene, i loved LST and i'm sad he died so suddenly and cruelly. i can almost forgive Kylo Ren for killing Han before i can forgive him for LST. at least i feel like i understand why he killed Han. with LST, it was just sheer meanness.

but you're right: he calm way he walks out into the fire is so resigned, so graceful, so powerful. like Ben facing Vader and just letting him cut him down.

oh good choice! i agree: the steps carry her so beautifully ~ she is ascending into this new life very much like Euridice out of Hades.

During the interrogation scene, you have Kylo (dressed all in black) emerging from out of the darkness shadows to confront Rey (dressed in white/grey), who is bathed in light (from the lights right above her). Also you cold say that she was in kind of a pseudo-crucifixion type of pose when restrained.

Also at the beginning of the scene, Kylo is getting creepily close and Rey is crying, trying to turn away, and pulling back. Then, when she begins to turn the tables on him, she starts to physically sit up/lean forward, gaining in confidence, whereas he begins to physically back away and hunch over. And by the end, he's almost cowering in the corner out if fear/shock. Good stuff.

i love that she practically physically beats him backwards in that moment. especially since she's the one who's restrained!

and since you mentioned her white/grey clothes, it's rather interesting to me, too, that at the end when she's ascending the steps, she's wearing an outfit that is less ambiguously grey than what she began with (for those who like drawing comparisons between her and Luke in terms of costuming ~ he went through the same progression).

    Interesting. And he is kneeling.

I always thought he just wanted to appear less intimidating by kneeling down.

given his expression of worshipfulness later in the film, i'd say this is pretty spot-on foreshadowing.

We'll see, I didn't take that as "worshipfulness" personally. But we'll see soon enough I guess. Poe is actually in a similar pose when he's in that thing. It's just that the other stuff in the Rey scene, combined with that, stood out more to me. There's much more "light" with her than with Poe for example.

RockyRoadCHu I think that "trying to make himself less intimidating" was PART of his motivations at least. The question is, was that the ONLY reason?

Foreshadowing -absolutly. This is before he found out that she is strong with the force.

i don't know what else you would call that expression on his face.
it's not anger and it's not just merely surprise. it's awe.

yeah, but he doesn't hesitate to loom over Poe and then tear his mind open. Poe is absolutely beneath him visually in that scene.

these are also two different interrogations rooms, so that may account for the lighting distinctions, though of course it's always an artistic choice. same with him crouching.

He also seems to have certain "go-to tactics." Namely:

-Wait until his captives wake up.
-Make some kind of "comforting" or "complimentary" statement. With Poe, he asks if Poe is "comfortable," brings up his skills as a pilot, and also mentions being "impressed" that Poe was able to resist more conventional torture. With Rey, he calls her "his guest," tells her that he has no idea where her friends are (i.e. they're safe for now), and mentions her desire to kill him.
-Then he tries the "soft approach," i.e. just asking the question(s) directly.
-And if that doesn't work, then bust out the mind probe.

I did take it as shock/surprise actually. He didn't expect that. Yeah, the stuff with Rey was MUCH creepier. Perhaps I'm reading more into this than what was intended, but I got a sort of "Jesus rejecting Satan" kind of vibe from that scene.

FYI here is a clearer picture of Kylo's face after Rey calls the lightsaber to her.

hahaha that's a great image. probably not unfitting given all the Light/Dark seduction/temptation themes generally in Star Wars.

it kinda goes back to bringing one's own experience to the film. people see different things based on how it resonates.

i agree he's creepy with her and i do think he's sorta just employing standards of interrogation, but he seems interested in her from the moment he encounters her on Takodana and the creepiness is him being awkward about following up on that.
whether that's because he senses her FS or thinks triple hair buns are hot, his surprise that she's "just a scavenger" clearly bothers him ~ and that really has nothing to do with getting the map, which is what he's supposed to be doing.

Could it be that he is just jealous. He feels her strength and gets afraid that he is not the "one" with the most potential in the force any more.

you know, i'm actually going to say no to that. in that moment, i don't think he's threatened at all by her (yet).

Kylo Ren seems so painfully isolated and lonely. i think he sees her as a potential playmate and peer ~ someone he can connect to, someone like him, who can understand him. of course he goes about trying to get her all the wrong ways because he's an awkward self-absorbed twit, but in the moment i think it's rainbows and ponies in his eyes.

he may feel different about her now that she's knocked him down. we'll see how he reacts in viii.

Yeah I think you have the better arguments on your side refering to that special scene and also having the lightsaber duell scene in mind when he offers to train her. Perhaps he has something in mind like "Kylo the Great and his apprentice Rey ruling the galaxy together":)
