According to USA Today of two days ago, Ford had surgery for a broken pelvis and a (re?)broken ankle. So apparently this wasn't just a round on the golf course.... Hoping he's on the mend and not hurting too much. Until they do kill off Han,I wouldn't be surprised if Disney signed him to a No Risky Activities addendum....

He is so incredibly lucky, he could have died on impact or landed in a crowd of people.

Ford's plane was a Ryan PT22, a restored WWII trainer.

I assisted with the cleanup of a crash scene many years ago involving a very similar restored aircraft from the same era known as the Fairchild PT19. The PT19 had a loss of power/engine failure right after takeoff like Ford's plane did, and there was a clearing that the plane was trying to reach, but unlike Ford, these guys were not as lucky. They tip-stalled and crashed nearly inverted in a heavily wooded patch, and were killed on impact.

Ford was very lucky indeed. Also, the type of aircraft he was piloting worked to his advantage. The Ryan PT22 was, and is, an extremely well built and durable aircraft. The Ryan Aircraft Company was famous for designing another incredibly durable plane, the Ryan NYP, also known as The Spirit of St. Louis.

When I heard on the news that Harrison crashed in a "two seat trainer" I immediately thought of the fatal crash site I worked on, and I feared the worst. I'm glad Harrison is alive. He's a good guy, and a great actor. I hope his recovery is a swift one.

I can't believe he flew a plane issued in 1942, I think he has a death wish sometimes.

My plane, which I fly regularly, was built in 1946.

A properly restored and maintained older aircraft is just as safe and reliable as any contemporary model.

Well it shows no matter how much you upgrade anything can happen.

I think you hit the nail on the head.

You can be prepared for anything and be on top of your game. Your machine can be closely scrutinized and details tended to. You can be the most conscientious of pilots (or drivers) and yet, accidents, sometimes bad ones, can still happen.

It most certainly could have ended like that, and I'm glad it didn't.

And, there's nothing wrong with keeping your feet on the ground.

Flying vintage aircraft is understandably not everyone's cup of tea.

Actor’s World War II-era aircraft suffered “substantial damage to both wings and the fuselage,” safety board says

The World War II-era plane that Harrison Ford was flying when he crashed at a golf course near Santa Monica Airport last week experienced engine failure, necessitating a forced landing, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report on Tuesday.

According to the NTSB, the plane “sustained substantial damage following a loss of engine power and subsequent forced landing.”

Harrison, whose plane, a Ryan Aeronautical ST3KR, crashed at Penmar Golf Course shortly after takeoff, called in to Air Traffic Control prior to the crash, reporting “engine failure” and requesting an “immediate return” to the airport.

According to the NTSB, “the airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings and the fuselage.”

Ford’s plane was recovered for further investigation, the board said.

I think that plane has made it's last flight for 6 months at least.

From what I've seen of the damage to the plane so far, I think it can be repaired and made airworthy again.
However, it will take time, and it won't be cheap. But I'm sure in this case, the owner can afford it!:D

In case anyone was wondering why the plane is referred to by two different names, ST3KR is it's civilian
designation, and PT22 is it's military designation. Two names, same plane. Referring to the plane by
    either title is correct.

Hope they get her fixed and flying again.
