Its a simple question, how do you think snoke or plagueis (depending on your point of view) survived the end of clone wars and the empire?

I honestly have no idea right now except that maybe he had a means of feigning death?
Or if he is just an outsider that he trained somewhere safe where his presence could not be felt after some form of excommunication or assassination attempt?

    What is your view?

It all depends on how he sustained his injuries. However, it is clear that he has been badly damaged. My theory (that I believed has been merged in the Clarification on Snoke thread) is that Snoke uses the Dark Side to sustain his life. The more powerful the Dark Side, the stronger he is. However, after balance was restored, he was weakened and so that forced him to come out of exile and actively unbalance the Force again. I also theorised that he dwells in places that are strong with the Dark Side of the Force (such as the cave on Dagobah) where he can draw in the Dark Side essence.

This both works with him being an unknown character or being Plagueis.

We really don't know. Palpatine told us he was killed in his sleep. If snoke is plagueis, probably a hit to the cranium with a sabre, a fire (there are burn scars on his face) and perhaps even an explosion (he is missing a part of his left cheek). Perhaps he did manage to cheat death by means of the force. Palpatine told us he tried, but perhaps he succeeded.

Was it confirmed in the novel/anywhere that he was even alive in the PT?

Think the biggest question is: Who is Snoke? (even if Snoke is Snoke)

Who is he, were he came from, what he did in Empire Era, is he a Sith or is he even a Force User?

Surprised that I missed seeing this thread until today....

Snoke's background is crucial to me. If he is Darth Plagueis, then the light saber damage he suffered, the force-inflicted injuries he endured along with the power and influence that he wields, all make sense from the Saga's perspective. If Snoke is entirely new and not at all related to Darth Plagueis, then we will all have more questions than answers. My brain can accept that Plagueis outsmarted Sidious and survived in the shadows, it will not allow for some random uber bad guy who has zero connections to the previous six films.

Plagueis enriches the entire story, Snoke does not.

Why do so many people want Snoke to be Plagueis?

Ok, so how could Snoke have survived?

Well, lets see how others in the SW cannon/noncannon multiverse did it? (Sorry about the EJ summary versions.)

Darth Plagueis, aka Hugo Demask. (A banker and a Sith Lord. Makes sense.) For his hobby he conducted his creepy medical/force experiments, especially on force sensitive/resistant species, along with his pet droid. Learnt how to influence the Force to extend and create life, plus heal mortal injuries. At least, he def did in other species. Did he manage to fo this for his own mortal injuries? May or may not be dead, depending on your POV. Palps thought he did him in, was he right?...

Revan. Was both Jedi and Sith Lord, was kept alive by Vitiate and tortured for yonks. Still managed to influence Vitiate under torture, was the patron saint of the Revanite/Order of Revan. Eventually suffered nevous breakdown and multiple personality disorder, whereby light half became one with the force and the evil side kept the physical body. Emerged much later to guide the Order of Revan in order to take over the galaxy, sent some revanites to do some stuff at the Temple of the Ancients (Why does this sound familiar?) Some other stuff happens in the galactic domination plans, gets defeated as he's trying to end his old nemesis Vitaite, joins his light/dark bits together, moves on.

Lorde Vitiate, the Sith Emporer who held Revan. He did some dark Sith magic and sucked the force out of all the living things on an entire populated planet. He lived over a thousand years in the limelight as the Emporer of the Sith. Much much later, escaped total defeat by Revan, who had hunted him to his 'hood at Yavin 4 where he had a totally tricked out ancient temple with a device that sucked the force out of things and kept him alive. Nicked off to place unknowns without a physical body.

I could come up with some new plot devices for Snokes apparent longevity, but Im tired. Perhaps later.

One of my theories also, but Viatiate instead of Revan. Would explain why Rakata Prime is mysteriously canon again.

I suggest reading the Star Wars novel; Plaguis to understand that character & his motivations better.
I still firmly believe Snoke is either Darth Plaguis or a agent/associate of Plaguis.
Plaguis by his own background survived a assassination attempt but was left with several scars/wounds on his head & face(much like TFA's Snoke).

I'd add that Yoda may have been aware of DP & his immense power, that is why he stayed in hiding in Dagobagh.

Great, now I have more food for thought Fettster, lol.

Juries still out on the 'who is Plags' for me. Being aware of how writers are masters of the art of misdirection, I still think there are possibilities of it being any of the three, or an unrelated character. Depends on how trcksy they want to be, and there are pros and cons in terms of story usage to all avenues. I was merely exploring the issue of how Snoksey poke could potentially have lived a long time by seeing ways it had been done.

From those options, I want to say that Plageuis most probably just simply went outside of the galaxy and did his thang until he was found by Palpatine's agents who then sided with Plaefuis over Palpatine and Plapatine died and plague is foresaw it causing them to lie in wait .

Didn't the FO lick its wounds and rebuild off in the boon docks of the galaxy where the Empire had all it's area 51/X files projects, swear I read that somewhere? I guess it's feasible they found more than they bargained for out yonder...

He might be kept in carbonite somewhere underground on Naboo. Isn't Palpatine last order is to destroy the planet? He might hide something dangerous there. Maybe the Knights of Ren discover the truth and went there. Awake the ancient sith who claimed the right to rule after that.

His injuries make it look like he's suffered some massive blunt trauma attack to the left side of his head, it doesn't look like ageing or usual dark side deformation. All of the early concepts were drawn with the same injuries making me assume his head is that shape for a reason. I'm guessing the nature of his injury is linked to his backstory and relationship to other characters in the saga, I'd guess at some point depending on who he was in the past either Luke, Vader or Sidious threw a huge chunk or rock or debris at his head in an effort to kill him, but somehow he survived.

I definitely think he is or was human btw

I imagine his head being that because the tried to re-collect his disolving body back and hadn´t enough power to be perfect...

Because they think the great sith lord has returned, finally, the only way I believe it is if Snoke says it.
