I know it sounds an odd question at first, but did Mark Hamill know that his character was being killed off in this movie? There is speculation that Mark Hamill may not have known that Luke was being killed off in this movie until he saw the movie himself. Luke's death is shown from behind, from a distance, it could easily have been added in later with another actor. He may have filmed scenes that would have ended the movie with Luke still alive, only for them to dump it in editing. If you've seen footage of Mark Hamill after the premier screening, you'll know how shocked and upset he looked, and I suppose that's fueling the speculation. One possible reason for them doing such a thing is the negative comments Hamill made in the lead up to the film about the direction they took Luke's character. It wouldn't be the first time misdirection like that was used on cast members in Star Wars. Most of the main actors in Empire didn't know Vader was Luke's father until the premier of the movie, for example.

Just found the speculation on this interesting, even if it's unlikely. What do you think?

People are going way overboard on Hamill's comments. It's been repeated over and over for months and he's said that ultimately RJ's story was the correct tale. FWIW Hamill complained about the director of ESB as well. It doesn't mean anything.

I didn't particularly make much of those comments either, other than it didn't particularly bode well for the character. But say, even just for creative reasons they decided late on to kill the character off, do you think it's possible Hamill didn't know?

Oh come on, Hamill eventually was going to tow the line because Disney had a movie to sell. He didn’t voice displeasure about this movie and Luke’s character once, he said many times. Heck he said last month he wished they used Lucas outline for the ST.

Hamill was winking to the audience that he didn’t like the movie but he’s a professional and did a great job. I should have listened to him more cause he was 100% about this movie.

Hamill didn't have to do anything if he didn't want to. But he did and had no problem except at first.

There's an element of confirmation bias in the way you're interpreting these quotes. Arguing further is probably a waste of time, but I'll leave it at this...

Mark Hamill has said TFA isn't high quality. His complaints about TLJ are very real. Him backtracking is being PC.

I love Mark Hamill as much as the next person, but ever since I saw this ^ I don't trust his opinion on storytelling.

I think he knew it or at least that it is around 99% sure. I remember him saying a response to someone at Celebration 2016 about a question of Luke never leaving 'be prepared'. It was his appearance at audience stage as surprise appearance. You should find videos on youtube.

So what is your complain about what he said? you don't think it carries more emotional resonance than 2 people he met a few hours ago watching him die?

Rey watching Han die is a huge character moment for her, it's really the first time tragedy unfolds right in front of her eyes. Known for a short time sure but idolized for a long time, hell she grew up next to the Millennium Falcon, even if she didn't know it. Also it's big for the relationship between Rey and Kylo.

And I really have no idea how Hamill didn't draw the parallels to Obi-Wan's death.

You have a good point but Mark's comment is still correct in that it would have been more emotional, don't see anything wrong with it. Many people where disappointed by the lack of a reunion of the old trio.

I feel that my biggest problem right now with Luke in TLJ, is that he's past his glory days. He's still immensely powerful, but he's too old and wise (and apathetic) to show it. I would have loved to see him put on a lightsaber clinic against someone, but that's something he just wouldn't do anymore at that stage in life. *sigh*
