That was my encounter with coffee last year, I lost, just thought I would share it.

The problem is how do you rhyme with elements of the ongoing saga, strike that magic Star Wars tone and be fully original. I expect that there will be twists on familiar themes from the movies and stealing the best ideas from the EU and making them unrecognizable.

You can be sure TFA will have more original ideas than the prequels. One of the problems with the prequels is that they had to create new things (characters, places, aliens...) that weren't based on anything and then tie them up as ANH approached --- something that's much harder to do.

TFA won't have that restraint, the filmmakers are free to do whatever they want. I just hope JJ has the balls to take what's in the OT and shake it up a little, not just playing it safe. I don't want a lot of heavy-handed nostalgia, they have freedom to do things that the prequels couldn't.

The choices are endless for TFA to take everything forward, don't forget a lot of things have changed in the past 30 years.

TFA will no doubt be better than the PT and since I at least to a certain extent enjoyed the PT in theaters, and still watch at least 2-3 on DVD from time to time, I think the film will be ok.

True (if you mean 30 years in the storyline). That's all the more reason for JJ and his team to push the envelope. 30 years is a long time, I'm sure the OT characters have gone through big personal changes, rebels have better technology, places have developed or been devestated by wars and such...

Indeed & it's strange it is still going on, at this probably I would have preferred the eu version of the 19 aby signing of the Pellaeon-Gavrisom treaty were both the alliance & the imperials kept their territories & form a union it's gone on to long.
