From now on, this is the truest ending of TFA that has ever been. That thing on the Blu-Ray is an editing mistake.

Can you imagine what would have been the reaction to such a twist? SW fandom would have gone BA-NA-NAS!

    Loved that.
How impressed is to me the ending of TFA. Such a beatiful landscape, the music, Luke's face...everything is just perfect.
Probably my favorite scene of the movie. The best finale for sure.

I was waiting for this. This edit shows how unfitting that "humorous" throw was. Personally I would have made Luke throw the lightsaber angrily in front of him.

That ending would have been beautiful without the throw though.

I love this as a concept, although I think the fan base would have imploded long before TLJ came out!

I get that it's not for everyone, but I think that's kind of the point- the long, dramatic walk up the stairs as Rey (and the audience) build their anticipation, aided by the swelling orchestral score. Luke's slow turn and reveal. Fate literally aligning...

Then, bam! We're hit with a dose of reality as Luke tosses the saber over his shoulder. It's the contrast that makes the final shot of him tossing the saber all the more effective.

Again, I'm sure it didn't sit well with some people, merely that I think this was the point of how it was edited.

Ha, that was good. ;) (As a joke edit, of course :p)

I feel like throwing it in front of him would be like an invitation for somebody else to pick it up. Tossing it over the shoulder is more radical and fits his mindset much better.

Now that would have been pretty awesome and hilarious. Could you imagine the discussions in forums after that. They wait would have been twice as hard.

This edit points to something I noticed on my rewatch of TLJ:

So at the end of TFA, Rey holds out the lightsaber to Luke and stands there, waiting for him to take it, while the camera pans around them.

But at the beginning of TLJ, she pretty much just walks up to him and hands it to him right away.

So for both to be canon, it means that Rey stood there holding it out for like a whole minute, waiting for him, then gave up, put it back down, walked over to Luke, and just handed it to him :p

I'm not sure the point of that was to specifically be humorous (though being humorous would be a, side-effect for a certain section of the audience). What I got from that was that Luke was at a place where his care about these things was non-existent to the point he could casually just, toss it behind him. Like a "this is how much I care" moment; presenting himself as being someone who is "so over that, that I just casually toss it away - there is no conflict. Been over it for years.". Tossing the saber behind him signifies that it's being thrown behind him, in the past.

If he threw it angrily in front of him, then he'd be showing he still very much cares, and it would seem odd to throw it before him. It would change the scene from being a man who has zero care, is far removed and unattached, throwing the past behind him. To a man who was still on the fence, having a moment of childlike anger, throwing his "toy" onto the ground making a spectacle of himself.
