Wow man. I totally mised that. How cool is that! And Luke could be Paul Atreides. He has evolved beyond the need to use a weapon.

The Kessel Spice Han was smuggling for Jabba was inspired by melange. Jabba was a Kessel Spice addict. It was also what strengthened his mind against Luke's Jedi mind trick.
The Dune books were a big inspiration on Lucas. Did you never realize Jabba's final design is based on Leto II Atreides from God Emperor of Dune (1981)?

Actually, if I remember my George Lucas/ANH biographical details correctly, Tatooine was inspired by Arrakis, with the Sand People as a twisted version of the Fremen :) Of course, there were no spice on Tatooine to mirror melange, except... that's EXACTLY what Han Solo has been smuggling for Baron Jabba the Harkoonen! ;)

IMHO, the Lynch movie is a mess, and it doesn't even try to do the story justice. (Even though they do manage to get some decent visuals out of its $40mil 80s money budget). Read the book instead; 'tis the best thing ever! (Also, you could watch the Syfy miniseries, if you can stomach a low budget TV-miniseries; although the production quality of that is rather modets, it does stay much truer to the book than the movie).

PS: Did I mention I love Dune? :p

I've never seen it either. But I've read the books...and they are awesome. The first one is especially awesome.

There are so many famous "classics" I haven't taken the time to see like Citizen Cane, Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Animal House, or lots of weird ones like Rocky Horror or Clockwork Orange. If it was made before the era of Spielburg, Lucas, and John Hughes, then I probably haven't dug it out.

The way the Lynch movie raped the Harkonnens is something I particularly dislike about that movie; that, and the fact that they made Muad'dib into an actual supernatural messiah, which turns the entire point of Frank Herbert's story on its head.
