Is it the most defining moment of the Saga?

Also posted this in fan art but I think this should be discussed here:

    A little food for thought:

To me one of the most defining moments of the Saga has always been the moment R5-D4 breaks down because of a bad motivator. This moment changes everything. So I ask: What if this never happened? Is the story over? Does the Empire win?

I know that it's said that R2 manipulated R5-D4 so that his motivator breaks but to me personally it was always "The Force" that made this happen.

    Your thoughts?

I was one of those who believed that R2-D2 had convinced R5-D4 to blow his motivator, but the Force works in mysterious ways especially when the impossible becomes possible. In this instance it could have been that because Leia needed R2 to get those plans to Ben that the Force was siding with them. It could also be that the Force wanted Luke to see his sister Leia's image and ultimately lead him on a journey to his destiny, a destiny that will be defined in The Force Awakens.

Wookiepedia says that R2 "sabotaged" the motivator. But for me that's not a nice scenario. I was disappointed when I read that.

By beeping and booping, I never saw R2 sabatoge R5's motivator. Unless they showed him sabotage it in the film then I guess, canonically, he did not. There are a lot of little details in the movies, that when see them and you think about it you find that the Force made them possible.

Didn't R4 have any ability to stop R2 from sabotaging his motivator? And how did R2 know he was going to be offered for sale against R4, that R4 might be chosen over him (Uncle Owen is a Republican), and Threepio would be sold alongside him, separating the comrades? It is a lot of psychic precognition for a little Astromech.

If the Empire never kills Uncle Owen & Aunt Beth, then Luke stays on Tatooine and who knows what happens from then....

I think it's in TESB when Vader tells Luke he's his father.

That really spun every die hard fan out.
It also created a dense layer of interest & texture to all 3 films.
It also helped define Luke & changed his entire life.

To me the most defining moment of the saga is when Vader tells Luke that he is his father. The logic of that is obvious.

A close second is when Princess Leia's full message is played by R2D2 for the first time in the presence of Luke and General Kenobi. This one requires some explaining:

The central relationship in ANH is the mentor/student relationship between Ben and Luke. It began when Ben tells Luke that he was his fathers friend during the Clone Wars. Immediately after learning that Ben and Anakin were friends, Ben is conscripted into action by Leia's message, and Luke's presence at that moment cements his desire to follow in his fathers footsteps and learn about the force. And all of this occurs as they take on the task of delivering the stolen Death Star plans to the Rebel Alliance.

I just want to use this post to say: WOW, I love the original Star Wars. Such a beautiful film. It calms me and pumps me up at the same time.

Not to nitpick, but Luke does not want to follow Ben after they play Leia's message. Remember he talks about how he can't go because of his uncle, and he can only take him as far as Anchorhead. If the greedy Empire didn't kill Luke's Uncle and Aunt looking for those droids, he would have never followed Ben Kenobi.

I expected this response. In all fairness, on the surface that does appear to be the case. But in reality, Luke did want to follow Ben, but out of a sense of responsibility to his Aunt and Uncle he says no to Ben. We catch a hint of this when in ESB Yoda states that he has watched Luke his whole life, and Luke has always craved action and adventure. Remember when Yoda says, "A real Jedi craves not these things."

All of that shows that Luke really did want to follow Ben, and the death of Aunt Veru and Uncle Owen simply freed him to do what he really wanted to do.

As far as the OT was concerned, I think we all know the actual defining pivotal moment of the story was. Warning: bad language ahead!

I never thought about that that way. I always liked the moment and thought that it is ingenious in how lot of things happens like that in real life.
Just this one little malfunction causes ''Return of The Jedi'' and downfall of the Emperor in the vast galaxy.

I agree. If Luke genuinely didn't want to go, he'd have come up with his own reasons rather than just parroting stuff that he knew his uncle would say. Ben even calls him on this.

Personally, ive got to go with Vaders turning against palpatine in Jedi. It really becomes the masterstroke scene that ties everything together. Especially when you add in the PT. Of course ,im referring to the unaltered "no-less" version. That little
Word when added in the new versions, totally takes you out of the moment. But I'll never forget my kids reaction to that as they watched all 6 movies in order. Spoiler free of course. So, it trumps tje Vader father reveal just slightly when taking the whole saga together as a whole piece. Of course that just one mans opinion

Wow. I'm glad I read through the threads before creating a new one, because that is the EXACT question I was gonna pose! Lol! I started watching the OT again last night, and I thought what would have happened had R5D4 not blown his motivator? I simply refuse to believe that Artoo had anything to do with it. He may be mischievous but he's pretty much a stand up droid. Would Luke have gotten involved in a more roundabout way? It must've been the will of the force to make sure Artoo was sold to Uncle Owen. Although it didn't turn out well for Uncle Owen! He should've let Luke transmit his application to the academy the season before, but was that also the will of the force? I love that I get to watch the OT over again with my 11 year old son, who is a much bigger fan of the PT I'm sorry to say. Although I fully support his opinion and I try very hard to be excited while watching them with him. I know how important the OT was to me at his age. (And still is) ;). But what I also have come to love is that I'm watching my favorite films for the whatever hundredth time, and I still find fresh new questions and ideas in them. They spark my imagination unlike any other piece of pop culture, or literature for that matter, that I've ever partaken in. And it thrills me to think that if I'm still finding new enjoyment from the OT after 30 odd years, what does the ST have in store for us all? It's an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan!

The defining moment for me when Luke rejected Palpatine's demand he turn to the darkside because he knew himself that he would be replaced.
