It's simple, at the start of the film.. Luke is the last Jedi. Then he trains Rey, he dies.. and she becomes the last Jedi.

"The Last Jedi" won't work as a title if we have two Jedi at the end of the movie, and she will obviously be a Jedi by the time episode 8 ends.. look at her abilities in episode 7!

Anyway, that just occured to me.. in my opinion it's pretty clear what will happen :(

Edit: God i'm a dummy, I just remembered Jedi can be a plural too....

    Screw you Rian Johnson!!!

pls delete this thread thank you

Even if singular, they referred to Luke as the Last Jedi in the force awakens, so I don't think it has to mean anything more than at this moment he is the Last Jedi.

That could be the point of the title - it means Luke, then later applies to Rey.

Or its meant to make you think of Luke, when really its referencing Rey.

Couldn't the title just refer to Luke being the last jedi, as per the TFA crawl? He and/or Rey don't have to die. She just can't get knighted in this film. Luke wasn't a Jedi until....return of the jedi, so maybe Rey won't get knighted until the 3rd film of the ST.

Don't forget that in "The Empire Strikes Back" the Empire struck back at the very beginning of the film. When "The Last Jedi" begins, Luke will truly be the last Jedi. However, that doesn't mean that this still needs to hold up at the end of the film. Maybe the word "Jedi" in the title will go from singular to plural, or maybe it'll stay singular. The point is - let's wait for December 14th to find out. ;)

I think the Empire is pretty much winning through out the movie

The only stated goal in that movie was ‘capture Luke Skywalker’ and they failed. Aside from breaking up Echo Base, what else does “The Empire” actually accomplish? Turn a Rebel conspirator over to some bounty hunter WITHOUT interrogating him? Take control of some throwaway mining operation? Not much ‘winning’ if you ask me.

The Empire is on the offensive and winning the entire movie. The heroes get the most basic of victories at the end because......we need them for the next movie.

It's just a fancy way of saying Luke Skywalker. It's also a clever way of saying "We're sorry about the cocktease in the last movie.. It's walls to walls Hamill in this one!":p

The Empire spends most the movie chasing down a single ship which ultimately gets away right under their nose. That's pretty embarrassing really.

They’re on the offensive but they aren’t ‘winning’ anything. Vader beats Luke physically and mentally and freezes Han. If Vader’s actions = the Empire’s actions, then I can see where you’re coming from.
What ‘victories’ did the Empire take away though?

Luke is the Last Jedi...until he makes there be more Jedi. Maybe by the end of the movie, the last of the jedi THEY will be.

I think it's more likely Leia will perish in VIII than Luke.

This title reminds me of the SW Rebels season 2 finale title- Twilight of the Apprentice....before its release, there was speculation whether it referred to Ezra, Kanan or Ahsoka. Finally, while it primarily was about Ahsoka, it can be argued that it also could apply to Kanan (his blinding) and Ezra (his exposure to the dark side). Similarly, maybe this title applies to Luke, Rey and Kylo (the fallen jedi) in different ways.

That being said, I think Luke could die in episode 8...especially after reading about the rumored scene where Luke meditates on a rock and sees the suns of Tatooine- it sounds a bit like they're closing his story arc. (I hope not though!!!)

Luke didn't become Jedi himself until the closing act of Return of the Jedi, I doubt that Rey - no matter how gifted - will become one in the middle film, especially with everything going on.

And, if they kill Luke just so Rey could take his place, I'd be seriously pissed. What good is your strong female character if you have to kill Luke to build her up? Talk about destroying not just Luke's legacy, but also Rey's character.

I also doubt that title is multilayered at this point. When the original films were released, for the audience RotJ was meant to be about Luke, after prequels were added to the Saga, you could have interpreted it as relating to Anakin. At this point in the story, the only Jedi is Luke. Rey will have to work for that title. The same goes for Kylo Ben, he has a long way to go back (if he goes back) to the light and, even then, I'm not sure I'd buy him as a Jedi.

Here's the other point, is Luke even really a Jedi depending on your point of view? He was never appointed as one before Yoda died, and what if someone from the original order survived? Luke can call himself a Jedi, others can call him that, he can train others and call them Jedi, and yet not be one by technicality.
