It's now been confirmed that the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is in the hands of Saber Interactive after it faced development issues at Aspyr Media.

Last month, it was revealed that the Knights of the Old Republic - Remake game was being postponed indefinitely after representatives of Sony and Disney determined that the dev team on that project bit off more than they could chew, producing results that weren't deemed satisfactory for that point in development on a tight time-table. The video game has been in the pipeline for approximately two years, and it was initially expected to be ready as soon as late 2022 or early 2023. More recently, official buzz confirmed that a new developer took over the project, albeit without a confirmation on who this new developer would be.

Bloomberg has been able to confirm that Saber Interactive, owned by Aspyr Media's parent company, Embracer Group, will be the ones taking over development on the ambitious remake of the ground-breaking 2003 RPG from BioWare. The group was already working on the remake to assist their sister company, and now it seems as though they are making the transition to fully take over the project. Saber Interactive has a much greater degree of experience working on bigger titles, such as World War Z and Evil Dead: The Game, so it stands to reason that they would be better-equipped to tackle a project as ambitious as a remake of one of the most beloved Western RPGs of all time.

The story of the original Knights of the Old Republic set players in the midst of a Republic/Sith conflict thousands of years before the events of the time of the Skywalkers, with the player character seeking to rescue Bastila Shan, a Jedi with the ability to turn the tide of battle, and take on the Star Forge, a factory with a strong enough output to bring the Republic to its knees. While all pathways set the player against Darth Malak, the apprentice of Darth Revan and the usurper of the Sith, players ultimately make a series of decisions that determine whether they will fight to save the Republic or to take Malak's place and rule the Sith. Without spoiling a game that's nearly 20 years old now, the title has a very interesting twist to the concept of the 'blank slate' protagonist commonly seen in RPGs that remains a narrative highlight across not only Star Wars video games, but the genre as a whole.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake is not expected to arrive anytime soon, with expectations from the development team suggesting that it will be ready in 2025 at the earliest. Ports of the original game and its sequel are available on multiple consoles, while an MMORPG follow-up to both games, The Old Republic, is being actively updated to this day.
