As most know I am a complete lightsaber nerd and some have asked me questions about the current combat forms. So I thought I would write a bit of easy information to summarize them :) ..... As Canon and Legends are two different worlds now I will put the (C) users and the (L) users so you guys can see what's current and EU.

    (red)(green)(blue)"What are the lightsaber forms?"(blue)(green)(red)
The Lightsaber forms are 7 unique styles and fighting methods taught by the Jedi Order. But each form was developed in a different era of the Jedi's transformation and the reason some are more commonly used than others. While the 7 forms where the official training styles, the Sith did manage to create alternative and unique versions of these styles. To combat this and other challenges many Jedi would learn 2, 3 or even 4 style forms in order to combat these unpredictable opponents.

    Form I - Shii Co
This form was developed when the ancient Jedi went from metal swords to the first lightsabers. It was not developed for lightsaber to lightsaber combat, but focused on disarming over injuring a foe, it kept to the ideals of the Jedi way. Every youngling will learn this as a base of their knowledge and fundamentals.
    (L) Notable users - All Jedi, Kit Fisto, Luke Skywalker, Meetra Surik, Kyle Katarn and Yoda (mastered).
    (C) Notable users -
    The Grand Inquisitor

    Form II - Makashi
Created to combat the increase of Dark Jedi and Sith across the galaxy. This was developed exclusively to fight saber to saber, focusing on footwork, precision and favored light cut and swing attacks. After the war the Jedi noticed less Sith and a larger use of blaster technology, which rendering the Makashi a difficult battlefield form.
    (L) Notable users - Count Dooku, Shaak Ti, Asajj Ventress, Darth Vader, Jax Pavan, Grevious and Kento Marek
    (C) Notable users - Count Dooku, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Asajj Ventress and The Grand Inquisitor

    Form III - Soresu
Developed exclusively for the counter of blasters and a defensive style. This form was the most widely used during the Clone Wars. Aside from deflecting, the style was used for minimizing the distance between a ranged target, using tighter blade work and dodges to create more coverage. Although popular It was highly criticized for it's lack of offensive capabilities, and favored survival over victory.
    (L) Notable users - Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, Darth Bane, Barriss Offee, Galen Malek, Luke Skywalker and Kreia
    (C) Notable users - Kanan Jarrus, Barriss Offee, Luminara Unduli and The Grand Inquisitor

    Form IV - Ataru
An aggressive style focusing on fast paced offensive combat. This form was huge during the Mandalorian Wars (L) and used force assisted acrobatics, somersaults and leaping attacks for both offensive and defense. Although the aggressive form was great for battle, it was weak in a prolonged fights, and difficult to use when in a very tight spaces. The form was known to be extremely popular with the Sith in latter years, using a similar variation.
    (L) Notable users - Revan, Qui-Gon Jinn, Plo Koon, Kas'im and Vrook Lamar.
    (C) Notable users -
Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Aayla Secura, Yoda and The Grand Inquisitor.

    Form V - Shien / Djem So
A form created for users of the Form III but believed the defensive form could be more focused to ending a battle. Focused mostly on powerful attacks and defense then immediately followed by a counter attack. This style was felt to encourage aggression and domination by some Jedi, this aside it did not stop a lot of Jedi using it. It would still become one of the most used form in current Star Wars light side users.
    (L) Notable users - Ulic Qel-Droma, Darth Bane, Adi Gallia, Luke Skywalker, Plo Koon, Ahsoka Tano, Aayla Secura, Kyle Katarn, Anakin Skywalker and Galen Marek.
    (C) Notable users -
Mace Windu, Ahsoka Tano, Qui-Gon Jinn, Luke Skywalker, Anakin Skywalker, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Kanan Jarrus and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

    Form VI - Niman
This was a very generalized form that covered most of the basics but has a very relaxed style to it. The style focuses on moderation, this results in a lack of advantages but also lacks any real disadvantages. It's an easily mastered style and it is primarily used by those focused on Diplomacy or favor force based attacks in combat. This style is learnt by a lot of notable users due to it being easy to develop with other form styles. It is also a great base form for anyone looking to be proficient in a duel or double lightsaber.
    (L) Notable users - Obi-Wan Kenobi, Revan, Darth Krayt, Exar Kun, Darth Maul, Starkiller, Grevious, Kas'im and Vrook Lamar
    (C) Notable users - The Grand Inquisitor

    Form VII - Vaapad/ Juyo
The most vicious and ferocious of all the forms. This form is widely used in the Battle of Yavin (L), and many Jedi Masters favored the intense unpredictable style. The style would later be restricted by the Jedi Order, as it was leading those who used it to the dark side. Later Mace Windu would develop Vaapad, a mind focused variation, allowing the user to channel their inner darkness to overwhelm their opponent without submission to the darkside.
    (L) Notable users - Darth Sidious, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Darth Bane, Rahm Kota, Kas'im, Galen Marek and Atris. (L) Vaapad - Mace Windu, Sora Bulq and Quinlan Vos.
    (C) Notable users -
Mace Windu and The Grand Inquisitor.

    Discipline - Jar'Kai
This is a discipline of Niman, in which the user learns how to duel weld lightsabers. The teaching could be as simple as being aware of the movements in case the time calls for it. To as advanced as carry two sabers on the user at all times. The primary use of Jar'Kai is to give the user the ability to face multiple opponents with an offensive and defensive saber.
    (L) Notable users - Starkiller, Ahsoka Tano, Asajj Ventress, Darth Sidious, Revan, Serra Keto, Grevious and Sora Bulq.
    (C) Notable users -
Ezra Bridger, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano, Darth Maul, Asajj Ventress, Kanan Jarrus, Anakin Skywalker, Grevious, Barriss Offee, Darth Sidious and Mace Windu

    Discipline - Don Moch
This was a discipline that all Sith use with their combat form of choice. Dun Moch involved spoken taunts and jests to expose their opponents hidden, inner weakness or doubts. The result of this was often a loss of mental concentration to the Force, making the opponent less precise and effective.
    (L) Notable users - All Sith and Dark side users.
    (C) Notable users - All
    Sith and Dark side users.

These are most of the forms I can think off the top of my head but, if I have missed anything please let me know.

What style would your Jedi or Sith self be?

I havw been praticing Lightsaber treatsies or forms for two decades. My primary forms are Shien/Djem So, Makashi, and Ataru. My speciality form is Jar Kai, duo-wielding lighysabers like Asajj Ventress and Ahsoka Tano.

I supplement my Lightsaber training with my European Martial Arts of Spadda Longa (Long Sword), Spadda de Filio (Side Sword, like Epee and Rapier, but a thicker blade that can cut), Sword and Shield, and Half Swording/Qaurter staff.
