A thought crossed my mind last night (goodness knows why I was thinking about this). When Luke goes to strike the Emperor down in ROTJ and Vader stops him, do you think this was to protect Palpatine or stop Luke starting his journey to the Darkside?

I've always taken it as a mix of Vader both protecting his son and simultaneously maintaining his perceived allegiance to Palpatine. I don't think Palpatine had any intention of dying right there. I'd expect if Vader didn't step in, Luke would have been force lightened across the room leaving the Emperor sitting there questioning why Vader did nothing.

So, Vader had no choice but to start a prolonged light saber duel while he worked things out.

I believe it was to stop Luke joining the darkside as Vader remembered Mace nearly doing the same many years earlier.

I have always thought that Vader did this to protect Palpatine. As fans we like to speculate and come up with theories as those that include things from the prequels and whatnot but we have to remember that when this scene happened, the prequels didn't even exist. Now, if we concentrate on what happened in ROTJ, it's perfectly clear that Vader was still under the thrall of Sheev. Sure he had his thoughts about his son but Vader was still so loyal that he did indeed try to kill Luke. Let's look at the battle and see.

As we can see here, there were various times when Vader tried to off Luke. Why would he even care if Luke fell to the Dark Side by killing Palps if that was the main reason why he took him to see Sheev in the first place? The main reason that Vader bought Luke before the Emperor was so that he could be turned to the Dark Side so it's perfectly clear to us that what Vader did when he blocked Luke's saber, was out of protection of his master and not by any sentiments for Luke.

    My theory:
He was still, at that point, doing his best to stay on the Dark Side. The block was to protect Palpatine. And, at this point, I think he wanted to be reunited with his son, yes, but on the Dark Side of things, he had no intention of changing his mind on that, and didn't until it was an urgent choice between Luke and the Emperor. If Luke had been killed by Vader during the duel, Vader may have regretted it, but in the heat of the moment he probably would have swung to kill. Being the observer of what was happening to Luke when the Emperor was attacking him gave him the space to think and make a real choice about what was important to him.
