I just watched TFA again and noticed that the planets are labeled on the map. But they can't read it. Terrible.

Yeah that's Luke's fault. He didn't want to be found over guilt.

Luke's fault? Can you explain that please? My point is, when they're in the command center, the plantets are labeled and there's a line that shows where to go, but somehow they can't figure it out. Seems illogical

Do you remember them saying he didn't want to be found. He is in hiding for a reason.

I know he's hiding, but are we to believe he's using the force, across the galaxy, to make it so nobody can read? It looks to me like there are enough planets there to deduce SOMETHING

One guy among oceans, planets, islands, and other places. I can read a map but that doesn't make me be able to pin point someone's exact location...

The map is incomplete. We’re supposed to believe the missing piece is so incredibly crucial the ultimate destination can’t be determined without it. Simple as that.

I assume that Luke is in an unexplored or unknown part of the Galaxy, and the Resistance can't find him because of that, so they need an exact map to find him.

Kylo was expecting to get the map out of Rey’s head somehow. So, technically, they both were.
C-3PO flat out says this after analyzing the map piece.

The way I see it is this-

Imagine you have a street level map, with the streets given relatively common names "elm, oak, main" etc. If you know what city you're in, that map is incredibly useful. If you don't you have no idea how to apply the map, or where it fits.

The way I see it is, in the vastness of space, only part of the map was useful- it was too "zoomed in" to really provide any information. It wasn't until the other part provided context that Luke's location was made more available.

C-3PO: General, I regret to inform you, but this map recovered from BB-8 is only partially complete. And even worse, it matches no charted system on record. We simply do not have enough information to locate Master Luke.

They have a precise location but no idea what region to start in. Using basic deductive reasoning, we can assume the First Order has the reverse problem – they know what region, but have no idea of the specifics. It’s not any more complicated than that.

Right, I got it. But there are a dozen planets with labels, LABELS! Why couldn't the movie makers just not labeled the planets? It would have made it much more believable, for me at least
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 30, 2016, Original Post Date: Dec 30, 2016 ---
Ok, not bad, I don't know why there'd be more than one planet with the same name. Even Yavin has numbers, the rebel base on Yavin IV.

    Maybe...maybe...

Well, part of the reason I said "same name" was to prevent Googling it, but perhaps a better example would be street names like "xxysskfhs" that yield no Google results. The point is, the Resistance has no frame of reference for what is on the map, which is why both pieces are needed.

I take your meaning. There seems to have been an awful lot of charting done in this “uncharted” system. But, practically speaking, cawatrooper is right. Knowing the names of planets in a system that doesn’t technically exist isn’t very helpful. They’re probably names no one has ever heard of. That doesn’t make the information useless, but next to it.
