So, it's been a while since we saw our three heroes. With the Obi-Wan Kenobi interlude #7, we were all still left wondering what the story is with Mrs. Solo. Sorry to say, you're not going to get much more information. Her name is Sana and Han seems quite adamant she is not his wife. She is a bounty hunter and clearly out to bring Han back into the light of wedded bliss. Predictably, Sana and Leia don't really hit it off well. All of this is unraveling as a fleet of TIE Fighters searches the planet for the stolen Imperial shuttle. Sana has plans for them all...

    Screenshot_5.jpg

Meanwhile, Luke was not quite as pleased as the rest of us with Obi-Wan's journal. The not-yet-Jedi seems to have hoped for a guide on lightsaber fighting. Undeterred, Luke sets of for the metropolis covered world Nar Shadda, The Smuggler's Moon. At first glance, it looks very much like Coruscant. Once Luke walks us through the door of the seediest bar he can find you realize it's just a much bigger Mos Eisley. Luke is looking to find his next Han Solo, someone who can get him to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. I wonder who will s going to break the news to Luke that the former home of the Jedi is where old Sheev hangs his hat.

    Screenshot_7.jpg

Lightsabers appear to be hot commodities, as the bar keep who promises he can get Luke where he needs to go only asks that as payment. Before they can settle on a price, an patron of the same species as Kasmir from my earlier Kanan review, snatches the lightsaber and starts the chase I imagine we will witness in issue #9.

    Screenshot_8.jpg

I have to say, this being the beginning of a new arc, I'm not crazy about the frantic pace of the story. I understand each issue is a piece of a bigger story, but the last few issues featuring the big 3 has been a lot of chases and claustrophobic fights. If there is any series that should focus on character development and slow burning plot, this should be the one. This issue has the slow burn of a fuse running to a pack of firecrackers. This is the first issue, so I will hold my judgement in check and maybe we are just off to a quick start. The whole might still be greater than the...you know what I mean.

    Screenshot_3.jpg

The artwork has been handed off to artist Stuart Immonen. It's much more washed out than the previous artwork when it comes to facial detail and tight frames. His perspective of action is well done, so keep an open mind. If this were not the big 3 I would tell you to hold off on picking this issue up. It will no doubt fly off the racks of your local shop, so if you value ink and variant covers over pixels, head on over there now. If you get your books via digital download, no need to rush it.

    Screenshot_9.jpg

I would urge all of you to get those back issues you have been meaning to read dusted off and in your finished pile. Journey to The Force Awakens kicks off in a couple weeks with Shattered Empire and the Aftermath novels. No more wondering if that blaster on page 4 will have ripple effects and be the same one Captain Phasma uses. JTTFA will have consequences that are real in December as the lights go down and the curtain goes up.

I like that we weren't immediately given all the answers after the cliffhanger. If you add a significant piece of information to the canon (even if it is not true in the literal sense), you don't say: 'ha, ha, we only joked' in the first panel. It's obvious that there is more to this story since Han is adamant that Sana is not his wife and she claims he belongs with her. The best thing about this part was kick-ass Leia.

Luke, oh, Luke, you are still a greenhorn and so, so naive. It's not clear to me:
did that guy use the Force or some other way to get the lightsaber?

I didn't mind the brisk pace, I actually enjoyed it. It will take a issue or two to get used to the artwork. I wonder how they will build up the story toward the crossover in November.

Think he shocked him, as far as your Spoiler Tag. Looking forward to more Sana Solo as well. Leia, badass as ever.

It seems the Skywalker's have a hard time holding on to their lightsaber's. :)

EXCELLENT! It's been long asked (by me as well) if Luke was ever aware of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, or if he ever went there in search of any remaining Jedi knowledge. Seems as though part of that question has been answered and the situation remains fluid....very nice!!

I really enjoyed this issue. I also prefer this style of art over what was done in the first arc. It feels more original and less like a carbon copy of the expressions from the films that were used frequently in the first arc. It is very much like the art we have seen in the Kanan series so far. I thought the pacing was pretty good actually - the jumping around kept me turning the pages and by the last panel, I was left wanting more.

I'm pretty sure that Luke is about to get himself in a boatload of trouble, and from the looks of it, Han is already in it. I'm willing to bet that Han and Sana had a working relationship before ANH and he abandoned her at some point and took off with Chewie. As partners, they probably ran a lot of cons together and at some point found it necessary to falsify marriage documents.

I don't think they were actually married, but they obviously had enough of a romance going that she knew why Han generally took women to his pirate cave. I also found it interesting that she is a better shot than Han is...and as we know from past issues - is not afraid to knee-cap and de-limb somebody to get what she wants. I like her character so far, and I still think it's possible she may be related to Lando or been in a relationship with him at some point. Not just because she's black (although that factors in to my theory) but because she probably would have had a history with Han about the same time Lando did.

He might not have just had the Falcon in mind when he said, "Why, you slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler...you got a lot of guts coming here...after what you pulled." (Translation: "You double-crossed me...ran off with my sister/girlfriend...and have the nerve to show your face here!") Either way, Lando connection or not, I'm interested to learn more about the character. I wonder if she will even turn up in the upcoming Han Solo Anthology film?

That's what I'm curious about too. I wonder if the origins of this "relationship" will be told in that film...

No worries, Shattered Empire is coming soon, though it sucks that the 1st issue got delayed from Sept. 2 to now having Sept. 9 being the release date (according to this Star Wars fan on Twitter that follows SW comic book releases).

I'm with you. I am enjoying all the new media cause it's what's been set on the table - so naturally, I'm devouring it. But I'm ready to get off the milk and upgrade to the steak myself. Can't wait for Sept. 4th when we launch into a new era as well as dabble in the old!

Marvel's Star Wars comic consistently entertains me. Haven't checked out Kanan or Lando yet though

Those are both good. Vader has been my favorite because I love the character, and they have done some great things with him. Star Wars has been pretty consistent as has Kanan, which is actually in my #2 spot. I have really enjoyed Lando as well so far although we are only 2 issues in. Leia is really the only one I didn't really enjoy. She showed her awesomeness a little bit in this issue of SW and let's just say I enjoyed those few frames far more than the entire Leia series. All that to say I strongly recommend Kanan and Lando... but if you are just looking at adding one series to your reading list, I suggest Vader. It ties in with the main series nicely and the two arcs we are on right now (i think) are on a path to crossover in the future limited series "Vader Down". I think if you read one, you definitely stand to benefit from the other as they seem to be handling the two as sister series at this point.

I really like the new art style, seems just a bit more cinematic and evenly done throughout. I also like how EU like Nar Shadda is finally illustrated, and how the art combines the PT era and OT era look and effects. Luke just likes to jab at things, doesn't he? Going to a capital is one thing, but a bar fight and just following what Old Ben did? Yeah, he really is still a neophyte. I assume his training on Coruscaunt will tie in to his power levels in Heir to the Jedi, where he has a decent clue and is much closer to his strength and ability in TESB. Leia and Han and Sana seemed good at first, but now I am really confused. IT MEANS ITS GREAT! The bickering and issues in TESB were worse than in ANH, so I see this just being part of the reason why until they kissed.

I don't think Luke is going to find anything but trouble when he arrives on Coruscant...especially at the site of the Jedi Temple. In the novel Tarkin (pg. 94) we learn that Sidious' lair, which used to be a Sith shrine (the whereabouts of which are unknown even to Vader), is directly under the Jedi Temple. The book explains that this ancient evil seeped up through the complex slowly over time and weakened the Jedi order, blinding them to Sidious' machinations. I'm afraid that he would detect any Jedi or force sensitive entering the complex. I doubt Luke will find much knowledge there before he is forced to flee for his life.

So does that mean they are having 2 issues of Shattered Empire on the 9th or did the one that was supposed to come out on the 9th originally get delayed too?

Nevermind, I found my answer. That is disappointing, especially after a couple of guys involved with the comic made issue with hitting the deadlines.
