Um...okay. Yesterday, while recording The Resistance Podcast, we brought up the issue of quality over quantity. About a year ago this time, there was barely ONE book in the new Star Wars canon. Today, there are several, as well as my tired fingers can tell you, many comics. We discussed that we may eventually hit a point of quality versus quantity.

In my opinion, Marvel's Star Wars Chewbacca #1 is a cautionary sign that quantity may someday eclipse quality.

    image.jpeg

I did not like this issue. At all. The artwork by Phil Noto is the only redeeming quality of this book. The end of this issue is slightly intriguing, but it's nothing we haven't seen before. In all honesty, I set the bar pretty low for this series in general, and Chewbacca hit the mark. Must have hit it pretty close to the mark to get me all riled up like this.

    image.jpeg

The issue begins with a young girl, Zarro, and her father, going into indentured servitude to pay of a debt to a menacing looking character called Jaum.

    image.jpeg

If you read A New Dawn, his character is kind of what I imagined the villain of that story to have looked like. The only way to pay their debt is for Zarro and her father to enter into hard labor, harvesting the larva of Adelm Beetles.

    image.jpeg

Zarro's father manages to get her out of the deep caverns and tells her to runaway and never return. Let me guess...she's not going to listen.

    image.jpeg

As soon as Zarro is free, she begins to plot how she will free her father and the other indebted, poor souls trapped harvesting bug eggs. Whoever is going to help her? I bet a big Wookie laying on a bed of flowers with a stupid grin on his face could help, Zarro.

    image.jpeg

Can you guys tell I didn't like this issue?

Chewbacca has departed Yavin on his own secret mission, but the A-Wing-like ship they gave him turned out not to be so great, landing him on the same planet, which is called Andelm-4, as Zarro. Yes, the two of them, Zarro and Chewbacca, become acquainted.

    image.jpeg

Zarro learns Chewbacca is familiar with the bondage of forced labor. Since Chewbacca has nothing better to do, he's going to help Zarro free her father. Guess that secret mission can wait?

    image.jpeg

Jaum turns out to be a broker of beetle larva. Guess what sinister entity wants to purchase it from him in mass quantities? The freakin' Empire! That's who!

    image.jpeg

I apologize for the sarcastic tone, but this really has Star Wars Holiday Special written all over it. Save your money and wait to see if the following issues bring anything more interesting to the table. Shattered Empire #3 is great, though.

I am new to decoding Star Wars font and have an Aurebesh key to help me. However, I have been struggling to find a good key to help me decipher the font on Zarro's shirt in the comic (the font on her shirt on the cover coincides with my key, however it changes in comic). As far as I can tell it translates to the same thing but I would like a good key to help me out in the future. Can anyone help?

Yeah, I didn't like it, though I didn't dislike it as much as you. :D

My main issue, I didn't like the girl and I think that was the key. We all like Chewie, but he is a walking carpet. In a comic you can't have his inner thoughts like in Smuggler's Run (which was great, especially Chewie as Han's moral compass), you have to pair him with someone likable or charismatic. We'll see how it goes. I hope it will get better. I wasn't expecting much from Lando and ended up loving it. Maybe Chewbacca will be the same way.

Based on that one image shown above, I can read two letters of what her shirt says: "____B_N".

I think that the artist might have made a few mistakes in drawing the Aurebesh. Writing the calligraphy of fictional languages probably isn't too easy, though.

Just in case you want to take a further crack at it, you can look at this:

When this comic was announced I was interested in what her shirt read. If I remember right it came out to be Rebel Girl or something close to that.

The shirt appears to be 7 characters. That's 2 characters too short.

Alright, so I just noticed the cover, which is most likely closer to the original intent of whatever message the writer wants to send. Let me translate that...

I ended up with "TROGBLE". Which probably was supposed to be "TROUBLE".

@Kyle, I don't dislike this novel, but I think it was marketed to the wrong group. I think we have to wait and see about this "highly personal story." Maybe we get to learn about what happened to Chewy after he saw Yoda off, how bad the slave labor was on Kashyyyk canonically, more about Zarro and her past, etc. I never expected this to be a good series, hence why it's a minor miniseries. However, unlike the Leia series, I don;t see it becoming convoluted and sudden like Leia miniseries was (which, i repeat, I enjoyed due to the political tones and seeing Leia force herself to become part of the military operations). In other words, it can only get better.

Or in other words, as hinted by the end of the novel, a certain Wookiee might get a little angry and make this situation a whole lot armless.

Yeah, this was... disappointing. Not horrible, or bad. But not super good either. I think that there's still potential here, so I won't completely condemn the series yet, but if you're not a super fan, or just don't care overmuch about the comics, there's nothing really to see here, move along.

Yep that's it. I knew I posted it somewhere. Found it in the Chewie comic announced thread.

Her shirt spells TROUBLE if I read it right. Yeah, I'm going to try this out. Wasn't going to at first but figured what the hell.:)

I... did not enjoy this comic, either. Which is disappointing because I was really excited for it. Hopefully, future issues bring something more interesting/exciting. Chewbacca is a character with no real backstory outside of the EU, and there's so many great things to be told... how he met Han, what his life was like on Kashyyyk. Why he left. How he became involved in the Star Wars underworld. How old is Chewie? There must be tons of things to explore. So, why this seemingly arbitrary story unconnected to anything at all?

Backstories, and more, might eventually be told, but it's clear this edition is going to be lacklustre.

You're right about one thing, though—the art is good. I like the blurring and the art style, but at the same time, I don't like the colouring. It seems very... dim. Compared to the other comics, it doesn't seem colourful and bright enough. Or dark enough, as the situation warrants. :\

He was 180, according to Smuggler's Run, in ROTS. So, he's now 199 or 200 :) Hope that helps!

I liked the issue, but I didn't love it. It didn't have that sort of instant appeal that the other series had (yes, even Leia at the beginning). That being said, with so many instant hit series, there are bound to be a few misses. It's just a shame that it's Chewbacca that takes the hit. However, the intro "text crawl" did make me laugh. It's nice to see how Chewy sees the world every once and a while.

I dunno. I bought this comic with low expectations, and I loved it. Art/colors were fantastic, and I loved the tone of the book. Doesn't take itself too seriously, it was a fun read.

EDIT: That said, if you gotta pick between Shattered Empires or this, pick Shattered Empires.

Hmm, this book is getting a lot more hate than I was expecting. I actually enjoyed it well enough, the art of Phil Noto is always a plus too. I will say that it isn't great at this point, but definitely not bad either, I definitely like the first issue in this series more than I liked the first issue in the Leia series(which sadly never got better IMO). I think the first issue was a bit slow, but it shows promise of a better story in the issues to come. The biggest weakness for me, as was stated by some other posters, is that the young girl wasn't really all that well developed or likeable in this issue, but hopefully that will change as the series progresses. I would give this issue a 3 wookiees out of 5.

Additionally, I did find the image of Chewie resting in the flowers to be a tad odd as well...

I just kept waiting for Chewie to say "Don't you have a soccer game to go to kid?" This issue came across as really young adult to me and that surprised me because the YA novels were almost entirely grown up with the exception of the Beach Blanket Bingo scene in Moving Target.

Agree. Not a fan of the story so far. Though, I did love the intro crawl.

The art is great, but we'll see how issue 2 does.

The story was OK but we'll see how the other issues are. The biggest problem I had was in the opening of the crawl. What movie were they watching to say Chewie destroyed the DS with some help from his friends? We all know what happened and if anything Chewie was in a supporting supporting role during this Battle.

I also agree that there may be too many comics about individual characters coming our way. We have this one and the C-3PO comic is out in November, I think, and other than finding out how he got his Red arm I don't know if I have any interest in it.

I could take or leave this issue. In a lot of ways it reminded me of the first issue of the Princess Leia comic, where I was very ambivalent about the series after reading it. While Princess Leia is no where near my favorite Star Wars comic mini-series, that honor belongs to Lando, it did get better.

My favorite part about Chewbacca 001 was in the opening crawl where Han is referred to as his sidekick.
