This series is great. The two issues we have seen so far are just what I wanted. We are seeing the Rebellion struggle to reinstate the Republic while juxtaposed with a dying Empire clinging to life. There are Star Destroyers, TIE Fighters, all the alphabet designated Wings, and AT-ATs. The art and story flow seamlessly together. This is Star Wars at its best; a galaxy in turmoil with the silver lining of hope.

    image.jpeg

This issue opens up on a rather somber Star Destoyer bridge. The chilling ship name of Torment carries on the line of nasty Imperial designations. Captain Duvat is preparing to receive a visitor, and once he gets word of said visitors arrival, the bridge is cleared. The visitor is a new type of droid that, as far I know, we have not seen before. It carries a message relayed by Palpatine himself, which Captain Duvat takes as a live transmission, instructing the captain he has been chosen to carry out a special mission. This interaction is very interesting to me. It's not clear if Duvat is deluding himself by acting as if Palpatine survived the Battle of Endor, or if he really believes it. It's an interesting look inside the psyche of an Imperial officer that has drifted so far from his humanity he either has no choice to try and believe his dictator still controls his every move because he no longer thinks for himself; or, he genuinely believes Palpatine is beyond mortality.

    image.jpeg

When we get back to what the Rebellion has been up to we find ourselves on Stedic IV in the midst of a battle in what appears to be an Imperial-fortified city. Seventeen days have passed since the Battle of Endor. The Empire is clearly not going down without a fight. Once again, the art in this scene steals the show. Such great work. Battles on the scale of this one run the risk of looking cluttered. This is very clean and each moment/frame stands on its own as the parts of a sum. Checchetto, Unzueta, Laiso, and Mossa did awesome collaboratory work.

    image.jpeg

Once again, the pilot Shara Bey, mother of Poe Dameron, walks away from another victory over the Empire. We find out that she and her husband, Kes Dameron, went separate ways after the Battle of Endor. Kes is on a mission where contact is not possible. Shara has been trying to distract herself with a lot of work. Here's something interesting: Poe Dameron has already been born. We didn't witness his conception after all. Shara mentions he is in the care of her father, so maybe we'll get a young Poe cameo down the line.

    image.jpeg
Shara's new assignment teams her with a very down trodden Princess Leia. Leia does not seem well. She seems very troubled and beaten down, tired of fighting a war that seems endless. Shara is tasked with being her pilot on a diplomatic mission. While in hyperspace, over a cup of coffee, Leia writes a condolences letter to the surviving family of a casualty. She mentions she has lost track of how many times she's done the letters.

    image.jpeg
    image.jpeg

They arrive on Naboo, the undisclosed destination of Leia's diplomatic push. She meets with the queen and other governing officials. Like other lands that bore evil dictators, Naboo has felt the burden of being Emperor Palpatine's home world. They pledge their support to restoring the Senate and Leia's efforts to build the New Republic. For a moment, things are good.

    image.png

Then the Tormentor arrives. Using a weapon we have never seen before, we learn one of Palpatine's last orders concerned the destruction of Naboo...

    image.jpeg

Not really much else to say about this. It's fantastic and if there is any Journey To The Force Awakens reading you should be doing, this is it. I cannot wait to see the completion of this arc. My only hope is that the Lucasfilm Story Group can entice Greg Rucka to write a few more arcs set in the same time period. Shattered Empire is hands down the best of the Star Wars comics series so far. If you are trying to stay spoiler pure for The Force Awakens I understand, but make sure to pick these up after you have seen the film. I hope I don't sound redundant, but this is Star Wars storytelling at it's best.

I loved this issue as well! The time skip threw me off a bit, especially because of Poe being born already; I didn't see that coming! That makes me more worried for Kes and Shara though! I don't want them to die any time soon! I loved the artwork of the dogfight, but towards the Naboo scenes the art looked weird to me. It was just me though! It was still amazing, just...off. Anyways, I hope that they can keep us in this timeline for a bit longer - as much as I like seeing new battles and planets (or old ones!), jumping around at the beginning of every issue might be a bit exhausting. Anyways, great review and I can't wait for the next issue!

Great issue. And, it's good to know we didn't actually see Poe's conception, he is already out there in the world - that actually matches Oscar Isaac's real age.

That double page with AT-AT was f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c! It seems logical that some of the Imperials would believe in Palpatine's survival, the other would continue with his policies because their own positions. And, that Palpatine had some contingency plan in case of his defeat/death. I wonder who will help Naboo (except Lando who is on the cover of next issue).

We had Han in the first issue, Leia in this one, Lando is on the cover of issue 3 - do you think our two heroes would interact with Luke in the final one?

Fantastic issue! Poe is already a little kid. That was surprising. I loved the "messenger" - that guy/droid was awesome looking. Maybe if Naboo gets destroyed we will finally have some Jar Jar Binks closure. ;) Glad we only have to wait till next week for #3!

I am not saying that the issue was bad, but I did not think that it was great either. They seem to be setting up the rest of the story, with some development of Shara Bey's character and her friendship with Leia (and hinting at her husband's friendship with Han). I am looking forward to next week's issue, but, like I said, I did not think it was such a great issue.

I wasn't wild about the multiple artists, I love Marco Checcetto's art and wished he was doing the entire issue, but I can't complain too much, considering the next issue is being released next week and the Wednesday following.

And that Imperial Messenger was great! I like your discussion about Captain Duvat's state of mind.

So is the Emperor communicating via Force Ghost or is this some AI contraption he rigged just in case he died?

I wondered about this also. Aftermath mentioned that the Emperor had doubles he used on occasion. And some of them were being used to give the impression he was still alive. That also crossed my mind. It's probably a recording though.

I think that the messenger is a droid with a pre-recorded message that was activated when the Empire died.

Nice issue! We got a lot of Leia, a bit of Mon Mothma and plenty of Poe's mom. Looks like we didn't get the moments leading up to Poe's conception in issue 1 @Kyle :) Interesting that Poe is already alive and living somewhere else. I wonder how old he is? I like how we get to see parts of Palpatine's contingency plan upon death. This plotline should make for some exciting stuff in issues to come. Though I'm hoping they don't go overboard with it like Jigsaw in the Saw films. Really happy to have 3 weeks in a row devouring this series.

Poe seems to be at least old enough to talk. I like that they went that route given Isaac's age that makes more sense that he was already alive during the OT.

This series makes me realize how much I'll miss seeing the Galactic Empire. I only hope the First Order can fill their shoes ;)

As for Poe being born already, well, this at least make Oscar Issac's comments that he likes to imagine Poe being a child on Yavin ring true.

The messenger bears a striking resemblance to
a recent reddit description of Snoke as having a liquid smoke face.

I don't think Naboo will be destroyed, they mention it in Lost Stars - The Empire try to conquer it/destroy it a few times post Endor, never successfully. This must be one of them!

It was awesome seeing Leia on Naboo, maybe she learns something about her ancestry. Maybe not. Cool either way. Plus more info on Poe was cool.

I thought the Messenger was a holo-recording from the Emperor. I think asking who sent that messenger would be really interesting - was this one of the emperors final acts? \Was it some shadowy group of high ranking imperials keeping up appearances? Or is it some new mastermind who has seen opportunity amidst the chaos of the shattered empire?

... I sincerely hope it is the last one, and there are links to TFA.

    Edit: Typos

Really happy with how this series is going! Really good to read and look at.

We've got Lando, it looks like, this week. I'm starting to wonder if we'll be getting any Luke scenes. Either way, finally having new canon post Ep 6 is nice.
