MSW: Laura Dern, Poe Dameron, & the droids of the Resistance

Admiral Holdo (good grief, these sequel trilogy names...) can't be Resistance if it was founded by Leia (a general), can she?

My bet is she's in charge of what's left of the New Republic fleet, or that this is the home fleet of a wealthy New Republic member world who have decided to co-opt the Resistance following the destruction of Hosnian Prime... Kuat, perhaps?

 

Looks like MSW's has opened the flood gates on spoilers for TLJ. These last few stories seem based on concept art. I wonder how true to the final product these will end up being.

 

Interesting take and very non-ESB I hope that is noted by everyone. Maybe it's more Leia is playing a more face time type Mon Mothma political leadership role while Admiral Holdo who wants to play it safe is more in the Admiral Ackbar role with Poe being a bit of a wild card that Holdo is trying to reign in.

 

More space fights and more Poe space fights...yes, sir!

 

Will Poe Dameron have a bigger role to play in the story line this time around or will the extent of the character be more-or-less confined to the cockpit of an X-wing in the requisite space battles? I ask because he feels too much like an ancillary character in the saga.

 

Being a bit nitpicky here, but worth mentioning that General and Admiral are actually somewhat equivalent titles. The difference is that General is an Army title, while Admiral is a Navy one. So, based on titles alone, Dern's character could still be Resistance.

Although I agree with you, and find more likely that she is probably New Republic remnant (they couldn't be all in the Hosnian system) who now has no other choice but to join forces with the Resistance. And that's where the conflicts will arise from, IMO. All the survivors need to join forces and that means people with different ideologies / principles. From what we could gather from books the New Republic apparently was always formed by different political groups to begin with (and by design).

 

Really loving this character the more I hear about her.

So would that be with Derne being an Admiral Adama type character and Leia being the President Laura Roslin?

 

Poe and Leia are Adama and Roslin. Holdo seems more like an Admiral Cain-type.

Interesting I will have to check that out I don't recall the Admiral Cain character in the newer BG series it has been a while.

 

She shows up as the other commander in the Battlestar Pegasus arc - she's a hard ass and pulls rank on Adama, creating some tension...She's sort of like a unhinged Captain Janeway if you catch my drift I could see Laura Dern's character fitting a similar bill.

 

This is a great insight. I posted awhile ago about the movies RJ has listed as an influence on TLJ, and speculated in my review of Twelve O'Clock High that we might see parallels to the first narrative thread of Battlestar Galactica:

I hadn't put two and two together with regard to BG's Pegasus arc, but I think you're right that this is a likely use of Dern's character, based on MSW rumors.

 

Wow looking forward to Poe & the Admiral going at it. Maybe Poe will be assigned to her fleet & go against a order that makes them enemies.

Poe should have a bigger role. He was originally not supposed to survive the TIE crash on Jakku but then that was changed. That is why he seemed ancillary. After TFA, RJ did some rewrites on the script to give some of the new characters more screen time. Poe was likely one of these.

 

I hope Poe gets to say something like, "Hold-o your horses, there, Admiral!"

(Although I suppose "Hold-o your eopies" would be more Star Wars-y.)

 

Don't get why people are so hung up on names being Star Wars-y. A names a name lol (this is my first post in the cantina BTW)
