    WARNING: Spoilers below

Indie revolver has posted another piece of concept art this time showing a Special Tie Fighter:

    Quote:
I believe this TIE image may be one of the most interesting pieces of concept art we’ve seen so far. While it’s exciting to see the updated designs of these ships, the illustration is a great reminder of just how much we still don’t know about the Star Wars universe thirty years after the events of Return of the Jedi.

These new TIEs resemble the classic TIE Fighter, with their vertical wings and central cockpit. The foreground ship has some departures though. It’s got extra engines between the cockpit (which has an extra row of windows) and the wings (which have elongated top panels). It appears to be a much roomier vessel with a large gangplank that descends from the rear of the ship to the ground; presumably the Imperial Guards at attention in front of the ship travel inside along with its pilot.

So just who is the pilot? In the original trilogy, we only saw the red robes of the Imperial Guard when the Emperor was on site. It certainly appears the the Empire is alive and well in Episode VII – does an Empire need an Emperor? If so, who might have inherited Palpatine’s throne? In absence of a new Emperor, have the regional governors simply maintained direct control of their territories for three decades?

Another piece of Episode VII pre-production art shows a TIE design nearly identical to the one in the background of this image save for the fact that it is black, and the ship featured red markings on its hull like the ones on the larger TIE seen here. That production art was labeled “TIE Fighter – Special Forces.” This new larger fighter could belong to the commander of those “Special Forces” – perhaps Gwendolyn Christie’s Chrometrooper is important enough to the Empire to travel with two of the Imperial Guard?

Much like the updates to the Stormtrooper armor, I appreciate that this ship feels new while still maintaining the aesthetic of the Original Trilogy. What are your thoughts concerning the new TIE Fighters? Discuss in the comments below!

Interesting design. The ramp is intriguing as it leads to the rear of the ship where it looks like there may be space for additional personnel... Maybe this could be the craft the stormtroopers are exiting in the trailer?

Well, there was another post asking users what ships from the EU they wished to see in TFA. I mentioned various TIE designs and, while I can't think of anything from the EU like this, I'm stoked for it.

Looks interesting... it almost has a 40s bomber look to it to be honest.

Their guess is Gwendoline Christie’s Chrometrooper

Edit: Although I'm looking at the background and it kind of looks like the woods we see Kylo Ren head to.

The stormtrooper in the foreground also strikes me as resembling the concept art we saw for a chrometrooper (I think that was believed to be real).

The shape of the helmet seems to fit that well, to me at least, though it being a concept art that simply could just be a classic-styled stormtrooper as they hadn't finalized the new design.

Haha, I wonder if anyone is going to compile lists of all these different theories and line them up alongside the real movie. That way this time next year we can see if ANYONE was correct in speculation/rumor.

Haha, yes! I think in many ways everyone here is going to do that to an extant. We'll be sitting in theaters and watching, a scene will pop up that is nothing like the rumors but across the world we Cantina patrons will go "AH! That's where those ideas came from!"

I like the design but think theres is to much of the red color. Then again it gets the attention which may be the aim of its occupants.Red..wasn't it MSV who talked about seeing concept of face plate being of red color?Hmm..

I really like the design. To me, it isn't as classy of a design, say, as the Imperial Shuttle, which we see Emperor Palpatine use in ROTJ. This design is more military-exclusive, awarded for high rank and outstanding service in the name of the Empire. It's both a classy carrier ship and a military power, able to fly and lead TIE's into battle.

I wonder if the wings tilt at all when flying. I could see them possibly tilt outwards from the top to make a \-o-/ sort of shape.

It would be interesting to learn who the Imperial Guards, assuming that's what the red figures represent, are guarding. With all the rumors about Kylo Ren leading a double life as a pilot and Sith Relic hunter, could this indicate a character that hasn't been discussed extensively in the leaks? I'm thinking this may be whoever is currently leading the Imperial Remnant...wouldn't it be cool if that was Gwendoline Christie's character...

For sure they will tilt. It is pretty elongated in it's upper half, and it would probably look better and provide better side protection if it was rotated in some way. Kinda reminds me of the way the wings are on Starkiller's Rogue Shadow
