    Many people seems to be obsessed and hung up on the many parallels and similarities TFA had with ANH and the original trilogy.

    Why not discuss what JJ & company delivered that was new or fresh. There had to be at least one! ;)

    And by new or fresh I mean a power, weapon, concept, or story line we have yet to see in the movie saga.

    good stuff:
    • a conflicted villain
    • humanized stormtroopers
    • non-Jedis fighting with lightsabers (unless you count Luke in TESB, but at least he'd started training)
    • Chewbacca gets to be a major hero for once!
    not so good stuff:
    • rathtars (yuck).
    also, for whatever subtlety it's worth, TFA redefined the good as the "Light", which to my mind gives the Force more neutral duality as opposed to being something good that can just happen to "go bad".

    Yes, for me the humanizing of Storm Troopers was one of the biggest changes from the Original Trilogy.

    Yes, Force Users freezing matter and energy. He stopped a blaster round and froze people in place. We hadn't seen that before.

    Here's something subtle but it's something I noticed

    -Women officers working for the Empire/First Order

    I don't recall seeing any female villains/bad guys before in the canonical movies

    I was referring to the canonical movies. I think this is the first time I've see women working in operations on a military installation for the Bad Guys. They show women officers for the First Order working on SK Base, and I don't remember seeing that in any of the first 6 movies. They definitely are seen working for the Rebels and Resistance as military officers, but I don't remember them working for the Empire as officers ever.

    For all the talk of reuse of old ideas it is impressive that all (I'm pretty sure it's all of them anyway) Non-humans outside of returning characters are new races (or models in the case of droids).
