I wish they would publish some. I want to read about the damn fool idealistic crusades of Obi-Wan, Annikin, and Darth. I want to read about how Tarkin put his puppet Palpatine into power.

Agreed, but since when was Palpatine a puppet of Tarkin?

The original press texts for ANH and the like clearly suggested that Tarkin's ambitions were to to dispose of Palpatine and become Emperor himself.
Original premises notwithstanding, it would seem in hindsight that the Emperor deliberately kept a low profile and the impression of being vulnerable - probably to discover any signs of disloyalty and treason in their early stages and to deal with these accordingly.

The original novelization describes Palpatine as "controlled by the very bootlickers he had appointed to high office" and says that "the people's cries for freedom didn't reach his ears."

Yes, that was the original premise but along with that came the ambition of Tarkin to seize power himself, because the Emperor was weak (before ESB). I.e. Tarkin was apparently not one of these bootlickers.

Or maybe the bootlickers were in competition with each other and Tarkin was sick of competing against the other bootlickers.

P.S. @Lt. Hija Maybe the Moffs and advisors were at this time envisioned as having a tendency to infight and backstab like the Sith in the EU.
